Dear friends of Life Enrichment Options (LEO)

Thank you all for your support throughout 2016.

As I sit to pen my final letter to you as President of the Board, I am gladdened that I am leaving LEO in good hands and with a bright future.

2016 was a busy and transformative year. Organizational and Infrastructure improvements, property acquisition, community education and recreation were all in the mix.

The year was highlighted by the addition of two new care providers who usher in a new era of cooperation, collaboration and dedication to our mission of caring and support. Please welcome Chona Gascon (Rose House) and Mary Njuguna (Ann House) and their families into the LEO organization. Our care providers are our most valued resource in furthering our mission and Mary and Chona truly exemplify the LEO philosophy of care. They are both off to a wonderful beginning in partnership with their residents and LEO.

We have invested in much needed physical plant improvements at two of our older Adult Family Homes (AFH) the Ann House and Rose House. Ann House underwent a much-needed interior “face lift” of carpet, paint, blinds and new furniture. Both homes received upgrades to hand rails, door hardware and grab bars to meet the latest AFH codes. These improvements bring a new sense of vitality into each of the homes.

Big News!! We have acquired a new property in Snoqualmie for a future home. We are now working to obtain permits and get the construction of a new home underway.

Our fall educational forum was a huge success. A capacity crowd of parents and siblings learned of different housing models and the magnitude of the need. Thank you again to our Sno-Valley outreach committee for planning and hosting the event.

Bigger and better than ever, LEO partnered with Waypoint Pediatrics for the second annual “Experience Fitness Project” (EFP) at Issaquah High School. Bringing fitness opportunities and a day of fun to participants of all abilities, EFP promises continued growth in 2017. Mark your calendar for September 24th for this year’s event. The LEO gravity car “Challenge Series” race day tradition continues, under new board leadership. Local

Life Enrichment OptionsFive-Year Development Plan

During the past sixteen years, with your help, LEO has been able to construct and/or remodel three Adult Family Homes in Issaquah providing long-term places to live for people living with developmental disabilities.

In King County there are approximately 5,000 adults with disabilities living with aged parents. These parents are just a medical emergency away from no longer being able to care for their children. This population of vulnerable adults is at risk of becoming homeless.

As you are aware a part of LEO’s mission is to provide housing for as many people with disabilities as possible and do so as quickly as possible. To help you understand the importance of your donations and our intensions moving forward, this outline of our planned activities to add additional housing in Snoqualmie Valley and Issaquah during the next five years, will be helpful.

This year LEO will concentrate on permitting and building a new home on the 17,000 sq. ft. Snoqualmie property we purchased last November. The structure will be elevated to meet flood prevention requirements and will be connected to existing sewer.

We expect that the remodeling plan will be created by the same architectural firm who designed the earlier LEO homes. The new home will be fitted with five main level bedrooms and three bathrooms for the residents. The care providers will live upstairs.

As part of the development plan for this property we will apply to remodel an existing 1931 cottage on the lot to become a home for two higher functioning adults with disabilities, who can receive some support services from the care providers in the new Adult Family Home.

During the construction phase of the Snoqualmie home, we will continue to look for a good site for a second Snoqualmie Valley home, hopefully in North Bend.

LEO staff is currently working with a developer in the Issaquah Highlands and hopes to know soon if a lot will be made available to us for a second home in the Highlands.

With the huge increases in land and construction costs we are working with the City of Issaquah staff to identify an opportunity to open a new model of a LEO home, utilizing part of the bottom floor, in a mid-rise building. This is a very exciting project combining City, County and private funding and placing the new LEO residents in close proximity to jobs and transportation. So stay tuned!
