Block and Bridle Year In Review—Interest Groups Beef Interest Group

2015-16 Officers—Erica Sutton, John Fortin, Nichole Wilson

The Beef Interest Group has been very busy this past year. Last Spring, members toured Trans Ova

Genetics as well as a feed lot. This was a great opportunity for members to get to know each other

while learning more about the beef industry. In the fall, members fundraised for our annual industry

tour. This year’s tour traveled through the Southwest visiting the American Angus Association and U.S.

Premium Beef in Kansas City, MO to Reproductive Enterprises Inc. in Stillwater, OK and one of the

most popular spots, Cactus Feeders in Cactus, TX. Our members were able to learn about different

production practices and see firsthand various segments of our industry. We are looking forward to

meeting with the University of Nebraska’s Collegiate Cattlemen in the beginning of April for an

educational event and learn more about each other’s group. The Beef Interest Group is excited for all

that 2017 has to offer and to continue educating our members.

Companion Animal Interest Group

This past year has been amazing for the Companion Animal Interest Group. Our interest group not only focuses on

companion animals, but exotic and zoo animals as well! We traveled to Minocqua, Wisconsin in September for our

fall trip. We had 10 members attend this trip and everyone had a blast! We visited the Wildwood Wildlife Park in

Minocqua. Here we met with the Zoo Director and were able to learn about careers in the zoo field. Members also

had the opportunity to feed giraffes vegetables and give a bear soda! We also visited a horse facility and took an

hour long trail ride as a group. We completed our first service project in December. We made blankets and donated

them to the Ames Animal Shelter. We worked together and created over 100 blankets for the animals. We are hoping

to continue this service project every year. The Companion Animal interest group is so excited to continue to grow

and connect with other companion animal lovers!

Goat Interest Group

2016 was an exciting year for the Block & Bridle Goat Interest Group. They kicked things off with a joint tour of

Premier 1 Supplies in Washington, Iowa with the Sheep Interest Group. Various social events and industry speakers

helped to build up to the fall finale when the group ventured south to the Tulsa State Fair and observed Oklahoma’s

Boer goat crop up close and personal. Numerous producers throughout the grain belt were hospitable enough to

give the Cyclone crew a personal tour of their operations. These experiences helped to spark the start of the Block

& Bridle Club’s first annual online goat sale. The group is already on track to continue growing the opportunities

available to its members within the rapidly expanding Iowa goat industry.

Horse Interest Group

The Horse Interest Group has grown in size and numbers during this past year. They first kicked off the

semester with a meeting in September at the horse barn classrooms where pizza was served and the

fall trip was discussed. Also, members were given the chance to sign up and volunteer at the Special

Olympics Horse Show with One Heart Equestrian Therapy. The group had a great time watching the

riders excel and seeing how happy they were when they accomplished their goals. On October 20th-

23rd, members of the Horse Interest Group traveled to Columbus, Ohio to the American Quarter Horse

Congress. Some highlights of the trip included going to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, watching the

congress and shopping. At the December meeting, members gathered at Perfect Games to enjoy

bowling and pizza. The Horse Interest Group is looking forward to meeting with new members this

semester and providing them with informational speakers at upcoming meetings.

Meats Interest Group

The Block and Bridle Meats Interest group has had a wonderful year. Our group’s first event was Animal Learning

Day where our members handed out snack stick samples and taught consumers about meat. We then headed into

the fall semester which is our busiest time of year. Our group hosts an annual “Meat Your Future” event, takes an

industry trip and contributes to the Iowa State Bacon Expo. “Meat Your Future” is an event we host the night before

the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences fall career fair. During this event, students are given the opportunity to

listen to informational presentations from representatives of various meat affiliated companies. Some companies in

attendance were Tyson, JBS, Cargill, Seaboard, Jennie-O Turkey and Hormel. After the presentations, students were

invited to enjoy a meal and network with the company representatives. Approximately 150 students attended this

year. The group then traveled to the Chicago area. We made a variety of different stops including a beef packing

plant, Tyson Food’s Innovation Center in Downers Grove Illinois, Land O’Frost Corporate Headquarters and

Processed meat plant, West Liberty Foods and Saratoga Foods. We also got to spend a day sightseeing in

downtown Chicago and Navy Pier. To conclude the year the group made and distributed our signature barbeque

bacon at the Iowa State Bacon Expo. The meats interest group is looking forward to another successful year.

Poultry

The Poultry Interest Group has been very busy this past year. Members have participated in numerous Block and

Bridle events. In addition to assisting with club activities, they have also hosted the Annual Spring Egg Hunt, the

State FFA Poultry CDE, and poultry workshops. The Interest Group has started some new fundraising activities

working at concession stands at Cyclone athletic events. Seven members attended the International Production and

Processing Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. At IPPE they had a total of twenty-four interviews with thirteen different

companies. A few of them had the opportunity to help the American Egg Board by wearing “Abe the Egg” for a few

hours out on the vender floor.

Sheep

The 2016 year was a very eventful and successful for many sheep related events. This spring we were able to talk with industry speakers and make outstanding relationships with those in the industry. We also made a spring trip to Premier One Supplies in Washington, IA. Sheep and Goat Interest groups toured the facilities and gained insight to the expansive extension of the small ruminant industry. Over the summer we had members host and participate in the Block and Bridle sheep show with the help of the Iowa Club Lamb Association. Once classes stared up again, we were able to host meeting for faculty to speak at, as well as make plans for the fall industry trip. Our fall trip consisted of a journey to Colorado and Wyoming. We were able to visit Universities (Colorado State and University of Wyoming), a lamb feedlot, see a veterinary school, as well as visit a club lamb producer. For fun, the group visited Budweiser and did a tour and visited a state park to give many of the students a first hint of the rockies. As the trip was in November, it left little time for meetings. The Sheep Interest has participated in fundraising and philanthropy events such as the Summer Sausage and Cheese as well as Animal Learning Day. We look forward to the upcoming executive team and hoping for another fantastic year!

Swine

The Block and Bridle Swine Group included industry based trips along with some internal networking. Members met a few times at Perfect Games throughout the year to bowl and meet others with the same interests and passion. The group focused on member interaction as one of the best things about the college experience. It was not all fun and games for the group, as students built industry relationships by assisting National Pork Producers Council (Des Moines, IA) in the Spring. In September the group visited Team Sloan Livestock (MO), Seaboard Foods (MO), Merck Animal Health/Osborn and Barr (MO), Kansas State University (KS), A Cut Above Sires (NE) and 4K Farms (IA). Students also had an opportunity to attend our 5th Annual Swine Industry Night where they were able to network with companies before the Ag Career Day. In November, six students made the trip to Duncan, OK to assist the National Swine Registry with the NSR Fall Classic. It was an exciting and eventful year for the Swine Interest Group and we are looking forward to the future!

Block and Bridle Year In Review—Committees Academic Quadrathalon--Holly Brown

The 2017 Academic Quadrathlon, hosted by the Department of Animal Science, took place on Wednesday, February

15th in the Kildee Farm Bureau Pavilion. It is a competition held at local, regional and national levels. Teams of four

are made up of university undergraduate students. Ten teams went head-to-head in this competitive, cross-species

challenge. The top teams from the species stations went on to compete in the quiz bowl. The overall winning team

of the contest, quiz bowl, first place team in Beef/Companion Animal/Poultry stations and first place team in the

Meats/Sheep/Equine stations included: Drew Wilson, Dannielle McCorkel, Leah Hassevoort, and Megan

Abeyta. The second place team in quizbowl and first place team in the Anatomy & Physiology/Dairy/Swine stations

included: Michaela Gregorich, Brittany Kellen, Morgan Young and Hannah North. Brady Goetz, Holly Brown, Tymbrie

Snobl, and Bryer Ott went on to represent Iowa State at the ASAS/ADSA Midwest Meetings and competed in the

Midwest Regional Academic Quadrathlon along with 12 teams from various universities. They earned second place

in the written test, third place in the species labs, and second place overall. There was excellent participation and a

job well done to all students involved. A special thank you goes out to the committee of faculty members who

helped organize their respective species stations, the faculty chair for the local competition, Kelly Schulz; the

regional contest adviser, Christen Burgett; several student volunteers that worked hard to help facilitate a smooth

and successful event.

Alumni—Jackie Klindt, & Trent Westhoff

The Alumni committee is focused on keeping alumni of Iowa State Block and Bridle chapter up-to-date on activities

and events taking place within the club. Throughout the upcoming year we hope to have alumni involved in activities

like Little North America. If any past members would like to receive any more information, please feel free to reach

Blood Drive--Megan Abeyta & Kaesey Glaess

The blood drive was hosted in the Kildee Farm Bureau Pavilion on Thursday, February 9th, with a theme of “We

Challenge U” and a goal of 52 units of blood to be collected. We saw a lot of growth from the drive last year, and set

a new record for the club of 71 collected units. That’s 213 lives saved! The blood drive committee looks forward to

continuing to make an impact in saving lives throughout the United States through our partnership with the

American Red Cross.

Cake Auction-Kelly Rue & Kackie Klindt

The Cake Auction is an event held every year to raise money for Block and Bridle scholarships. Cakes are donated

by students and faculty to be auctioned off. The event is attended by businesses, students, and faculty. All of the

money raised goes towards scholarships for our club members.

Cyclone Classic—Kenton Lain, Abby Collison, Danielle Hermsen

Cyclone Classic is the annual jackpot cattle show Block & Bridle puts on in March. Our event is held at the Jeff and

Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center which allows us a large facility with a great setup. Our fundraising

efforts began in January, and after receiving donations from around 60 sponsors we reached our sponsorship

goal. In order to successfully put on our show we collaborated with vendors, judges, sponsors, exhibitors, and many

more. We held our skillathon and showmanship competitions on Friday evening, with a large turnout for both of

those events. On Saturday, March 18th we had our Breeding Heifer Show and our Market Cattle Show was on

Sunday, March 19th. This year we had Mr. Cory Thomsen from Mitchell, South Dakota sort the cattle on both

days. We were able to once again improve our awards for the exhibitors, drawing in even more cattle from years

past. This year we had a record number of cattle at approximately 430 head. As the show continues to grow, the

future of Cyclone Classic is looking as bright as ever.

Dog Show—Angel Pivonka & Leah Hassevoort

Last semester, the Block and Bridle Dog Show welcomed dog showman, both young and old, from around Iowa and a few surrounding states. Many different breeds participated as well, from a Bearded Pointing Griffon, to and American Eskimo, to an exuberant Boxer mix. All of the showman exhibited their dogs’ skills in a variety of obedience classes, offered at different levels to challenge both dog and handler. We were very excited to host Mrs. Stephanie Peters and her therapy dog, Butterscotch, who held a clicker training workshop for the benefit of our participants. Those who won took home gift bags filled with donated doggie goodies, and many expressed interest in returning. We hope to make the show even better next semester.

Farm Tours—Holly Brown & Emily White

The Farm Tour committee's purpose is to enthusiastically showcase and inform prospective students and families

about Iowa State’s research and teaching farms. A variety of different groups throughout the academic year come to

visit, including weekly Experience Iowa State tours for high school students, tours during the Iowa State FFA

Convention, custom visits, as well as Junior Visit Days each semester. In the past year, we have been able to bring

visitors to our swine, beef, sheep, horse, and dairy farms ranging from the East Coast to Texas. We also facilitated

bus tours to families in the community during Animal Learning Day. The committee consists of two co-chairs and

volunteer members from the club.

Food Stand—Emily Harke, Morgan Rosenberg, Toni Chicos

The tri-chairs of the Food Stand committee work hard to provide a concession stand at various Block and Bridle

events including; Spring Market Hog Show, Cyclone Classic, Animal Learning Day and LNA. The income from the

food that is sold contributes to Block and Bridle’s members by providing necessary tools and equipment for the club

to strengthen leadership.

Freshman BBQ—Trent Weshoff & Morgan Rosenberger

This year’s Freshman Transfer BBQ was a great success due to the hard work of the committee members. We had about 250 incoming freshman and transfer students go through and have mouthwatering hamburgers, grilled up by our grill team, baked beans, chips, and cookies. The incoming students had the opportunity to speak with and sign up for all the interest groups within Block and Bridle. This event was a great start to the 2016-2017 school year.

Goat Sale—Gavin Meyer & Derek Counsell

On an adventure to Oklahoma in the fall, an idea was born. That idea turned into the first Annual Iowa State

University Block and Bridle Online Goat Sale. The brainstormers of that idea were the following individuals:

chairpersons Gavin Meyer and Derek Counsell, and committee members Francesca Mittag, Levi Collins, Brett

Henningsen, Case Bozdech, and Zach Bobb. As a committee, we brainstormed to come up with a list of potential

consigners from Iowa and the rest of the Midwest, contacted them with our idea, and found 11 producers that

agreed to be a part of our sale. On March 30th, our sale aired on showstockplanet.com. Ten of the 11 head of goats

sold, along with a Show Stock Planet T-Shirt, and a Block and Bridle hat for an average price of $740.20 per head.

The Block and Bridle Goat Interest Group earned 7.5% of each item that sold in the sale, for a total of $566.40. One

of the consigners, the Mittag Family, donated the proceeds of their goat, which was $550, to a very special cause.

Natalie Young, a young lady from Cedar Falls has spinal muscular atrophy, and her family is on a mission to build

“an accessible home, build a future and break barriers.” The proceeds of their goat are going to help them in their

efforts to complete that mission.

Grill Team—Darin Kock, Kody Frauen, Derek Seward

The grill team is a very important aspect of the Block and Bridle Club. We are the team that does most behind the

scene work to make events possible. Whenever there is an event, show or sale that needs food grilled for hungry

people- we are there. The grill team brings people together, whether it is event/show members, family, or block and

bridle members.

Horse Show—Audrey Lester, Christian Francois, Caitlin Crine

This year we will be putting on the 73rd annual Block & Bridle Horse Show starting at 9am, at the Jeff & Deb Hansen

Agricultural Student Learning Center in Ames. We were extremely lucky to have Iowa Equine donate their time to

have a bet on site in the morning to check health papers. We are excited to host as many riders from ages 6 to 56

and older. Our judge this year is Kristin Martz Fuhrmann coming from River Side for the day of the show. We will

have a local 4-H bringing food to serve for breakfast and lunch, and we are grateful and excited to have them! We

have tiaras for the cowgirl queens, director chairs for high point winners and duffle bags for reserve high point

winners and we can't wait to give out those prizes!

Lamb Sale—Justin Swanton, Dalton Pottebaum, Sam Gerrard

The 2017 Block and Bridle Spring Lamb Sale showed much improvement this year as it was headed by chairmen

Justin Swanton, Dalton Pottebaum, and Sam Gerrard. The sale was on Wednesday, March 15th hosted by

Showstockplanet.com Online Sales. This year, 35 lots were sold and 33 consignors were represented from all across

the state. This year’s sale brought a RECORD BREAKING total of $15,727.88! Our committee is very gracious for the

support of many of the club lambs produced for selling many high quality lambs this year. We cannot wait to

continue the growth of this sale in the coming years.

Lamb Show—Bailey Schnickloth & Lexie Berry

The 2016 Block and Bridle Lamb show took place on June 12th in Colfax at the Jasper County Fair Grounds. The

show ran in conjunction with the Iowa Club Lamb Association's Open Market Lamb Show sponsored by the

Heartland Youth Show Lamb Circuit. This all took place in accordance with the Iowa Sheep and Wool Festival. We

had a great turn out and can't thank our judge Isaiah Spath and our sponsors for another successful show.

Little North American-- Francesca Mittag, Madison Wood, Austin Pueschel

The Block and Bridle Club hosted the 97th Annual Little North American showmanship contest on October 15th,

2016. At the competition, students exhibited animals in a confined area while being judged based on their

showmanship abilities that they have acquired. Students were able to show Dairy and Beef Cattle, Swine, Sheep,

Poultry, Goats and Equine under the surveillance of club members and farm managers. Each member was allowed to

compete in the competition with a maximum of two species.

Each student that participated in the show was asked to pay a set fee per animal to participate in practice. This fee

paid for their t-shirt and contributed to the budget for awards. The participants were required to attend practices

held out at the university farms to work with their assigned animals. In order to show, they must have attended 8

practices per animal. The practices were monitored by farm managers and superintendents on the show committee.

134 students participated in this year’s event which is recorded numbers compared to the past. The winners of each

species competed in a Round Robin where they exhibited all of the species that were shown at the event against the

other species showmanship winners. The event was open to the public for viewing the show as well as the Hansen

Agricultural Student Learning Center. Congratulations to the Pro Round Robin Winner, Kale Boysen, and Novice

Round Robin Winner, Bridget Halat.

National Convention-Emma Wilson & Emma Brost

Block and Bridle National Convention gives members the opportunity to meet and converse with other members throughout the nation. This years convention was held by the University of Connecticut in Washington, D.C. March 30th -April 3rd. Forty-two members along with two advisors had the opportunity to tour the National Mall Monuments, learn about Maryland’s agriculture from visits to oyster and dairy farms, tour the White House, visit the Committee on Agriculture room, as well as network with industry representatives to further develop skills to use in their animal science careers. To say members had a blast, was an understatement!

Philanthropy—Gabbi Di Russo, Katherine Taylor This year Philanthropy Committee took on yet again the Fight Against Hunger. The annual Hunger Fight with Meals from the Heartland packaged 83,500 meals to be sent out to people in need. A big thank-you to those who participated and sponsor to make the event possible!.

Proven to Win Pig Sale—Kristi Smith, McKenna Brinning, Shae Seils

The Proven to Win Pig Sale brings a lot to the table for Iowa State students. This is an event that gives young breeders within the swine industry, that are alumni, currently attending the university, or using SGI sires, a chance to network with customers and expand their knowledge to better themselves for the future. This event also helps students understand the logistics of running a pig sale and helps improve their time management while organizing the materials and essentials needed to make the sale successful. The 2017 sale brought record-breaking entries along with 25 Block and Bridle members working together to make

the sale a success. There were a total of 122 weanling pigs entered. As for the sale, a total of 91 pigs sold for an

average of $336.54. The sale as a whole brought the club a total of over $30,000. This money will go towards

improving next year’s sale along with advancing the club in a positive direction.

Publicity—Katie Arndt

Katie has been building up our social media pages by adding more photos, strategically timing posts, and utilizing

catchy captions, to increase our audience size. You can usually find Katie behind a camera, or scheduling post

publications, in the Block & Bridle office. Block & Bridle is currently on Twitter at ISU_BlockBridle, and on Facebook

at Iowa State Block & Bridle Club. We look forward to adding Snapchat and potentially Instagram to our club. Lastly,

per display cases, in Kildee Hall are getting a makeover. Follow us on Social Media!

Scholarship--Jordan Travis & Gavin Meyer

They would like to thank the judges, Dr. Jodi Sterle, Dr. Chris Cassady and Mr. Greg Krahn, for taking time out of

their busy schedules and assisting in choosing this year’s recipients. Congratulations again to those winners!

Spring Jackpot Show—Austin PueschelMacy Marek, Bailey Schneekloth

This will be the second year for the Block & Bridle and Alpha Gamma Rho Spring Spectacular. This new show

engages current Block & Bridle students focused on the swine industry as well as reaching to perspective students

involved in the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series.

Because of this show, students are able to have the opportunity to hold leadership positions within the club as well

as gain useful knowledge of running a jackpot show. The skills and networks made through this experience will put

them one step further in their career paths in the swine and agriculture industry.

Having a sanctioned show with the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series gives us an advantage to show off Iowa State’s

dedication to helping exhibitors of the organization be successful in the show ring. Having Iowa State faculty and

current students run this show gives a positive image for Iowa State University and the Animal Science Department

to these exhibitors and their families. Last years show included 215 head of swine exhibited and went exceptionally

well. We are looking forward to this year’s event on Sunday, April 23rd at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

Spring Market Hog Show—Toni Chicos, Sarah Orban, Lucas Olson

Spring Market Hog Show was held in February and is a very large event for our club. Committee chairs are in charge

of every aspect of the show from fundraising to gathering participants.

Summer Sausage and Cheese—Olivia Bisbee, Courtney Yeager, Juli Henderson

The Summer Sausage and Cheese Fundraiser had a tremendous year this past fall. We were able to sell a record amount of product as well as sell out of summer sausage. As usual we tried to reach new customers and continue connects with old ones. We appreciate every purchase and donation made. Thanks for helping us make this such a great year!

Dairy Science Club Over 120 udderly awesome members, 3 advisors, and many alumni supporters continue to hold the prestigious title of one of the most active clubs on campus, the Iowa State Dairy Science Club. Besides our monthly meetings the members have endless opportunities to get involved within the College of Agriculture and the Ames community. Some of our most active committees include: Alumni, Education, Coalition, IMAC, Banquet, Food at First, Iowa Youth Dairy Coalition, “I Milked A Cow”, Ice Cream, and Industry Relations. These committees keep our schedules busy every month, and every year we look for ways to continue to increase our presence at Iowa State University and increase connections within the dairy industry. If you walk around Kildee Hall on a Wednesday you may get asked, “what flavor of ice cream did you buy today?” We’re proud to say our ice cream is our biggest year-round fundraiser, and our members enjoy mixing and selling ice cream every week even in those cold winter months. You can never get enough Reese’s Ice Cream! Another exciting activity for our club is I Milked a Cow at the Iowa State Fair. Every year a group of members spend their time at the Iowa State Fair caring for, milking, and keeping 14 cows clean and picture ready. These cows are on display for the fair to represent the 7 dairy breeds of the US as well as give the fair-goers the opportunity to milk a live cow! Besides being involved in the Ames community, our club reaches out to our industry through educating students in Northeast Iowa, attending World Dairy Expo, participating in Midwest and National Dairy Conferences, and touring various dairy entities. Although we love our cows, we also enjoy giving back to our local community here in Ames with our free monthly meal preparation for the community called Food at First. We continue to build our friendships through intramurals, socials, meetings, and bonding time in Kildee. We invite anyone who has a passion for agriculture to join our club for an opportunity to gain industry relations and life long friends. Many of our members are not Dairy Science Students and some even come from outside of the College of Ag and Life Sciences. The Iowa State Dairy Science Club looks forward to many prosperous years ahead for our club, members, and industry.

Intercollegiate Beef Team Throughout this past year members of Collegiate Beef Team have had the opportunity to have many speakers come

in and learn more about beef reproduction techniques, beef nutrition research, and many other topics. Some of our

key industry speakers have been Michelle Baumhover from Iowa Premium Beef, Bonnie Larsen with Werner Family

Angus, and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. We have been able tour the beef nutrition farm here at Iowa State to

learn about the research and work that they do and we will also be touring Wiese & Son’s Hereford Operation later

this spring as well as a feed lot operation to see more aspects of the industry.

Meat Science Club The Iowa State Meat Science club is a hands-on educational based club for those interested in the meat industry.

We hold monthly meetings to discuss upcoming events that need the support of our members. We are involved in

Bacon Expo, work closely with the Iowa State University Meat Laboratory Extension program, and volunteer with the

Iowa BBQ Society and their annual Zoo B-Que. We have responsibilities and encourage our members to assist with

short courses held at the meat lab, both ISU and Smithfield, as assistant group leaders, working side by side with

industry personnel to manufacture a wide array of meat products from bacon to bologna. We also provide tours of

the meat lab for different groups, both for short courses held here and 4H, FFA, visiting High School students,

different classes, etc. Our fundraising event is the sale of our holiday hams. We procure the hams from JBS in

Marshalltown and process them ourselves here at the meat lab-everything from brining, netting, smoking, slicing,

and packaging. We are not the largest club on campus, but our members are very involved and gain valued

experiences that set them up for success in their future careers.

Veterinarian’s Without Boarders The Veterinarians Without Borders Club is composed of an exceptional group of young, aspiring world shapers. It is

our mission to use our education, resources, and passion to change the world and make it a better place. No act is

too small. The changes we want to see for the future of humanity starts with all of us working together as a team to

help refine our leadership skills through both local and international services. During our meetings we strategize

projects that will have a positive influence on the Iowa State and Ames community, as well as plan future service

trips and invite speakers from the university to share their experiences to help fuel our hunger to continue our work.

Our goal is to leave a legacy of service, gratitude, and empowerment.

2017 Hall of Fame Award Dr. Don Beitz’s outstanding research and teaching accomplishments and impact, leadership and service are

hallmarks of his career that make him most deserving of the Department’s 2017 Hall of Fame Award. Dr. Beitz’s internationally recognized research in nutritional physiology and biochemistry has solved many problems in both animal and human nutrition. He is regarded as an icon of highly effective instruction and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Beitz enhances the distinction of the department, the college and ISU through his nutritional physiology/biochemistry research and dedication to outstanding quality of teaching and advising both undergraduate and graduate students.

Dr. Beitz was raised on a Guernsey dairy farm in Illinois where he developed an intense interest in agriculture with an emphasis on animal science. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural science in 1962 and dairy science in 1963 from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University in 1967 with majors in dairy nutrition and biochemistry. Dr. Beitz began his professional career at Iowa State University in 1967 with an appointment in the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology. He holds the title of Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture. Teaching responsibilities have included biochemistry courses for freshman veterinary students as well as for undergraduate and graduate students and two seminar classes. Dr. Beitz gains much satisfaction from advising undergraduate students with majors in agricultural biochemistry and graduate students (105 graduate degrees awarded) with majors in nutritional physiology and biochemistry. This year marks his 100th semester of teaching at Iowa State University. In his 50 years, he has taught over 12,000 students!

Dr. Beitz’s research activities have been collaborative, diverse, and related to practical problems of animal agriculture and human nutrition. His research has been focused on milk fever, lactation ketosis, plasma cholesterol regulation by diet, milk and meat composition, mitochondrial DNA and milk production, beef cattle growth, genetic control of the fatty acid composition of beef and milk, beef tenderness as influenced by vitamin D, and feeding of distillers grains to cattle. He has maintained a long-term research collaboration with colleagues at the USDA/National Animal Disease Center.

Dr. Beitz has published more than 276 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 331 abstracts, and 9 patents and made about 250 off-campus professional presentations. Awards and honors include several local and national awards for teaching, research, and advising excellence. He was honored to receive the AFIA Nutrition Research Award and the American Cyanamid Award of the ADSA. Moreover, he was named a Fellow of ADSA, ASAS, ASN, IAS, and AAAS. Dr. Beitz also has served as treasurer and chaired several award committees of the ASN. He has served on a variety of committees of the ASAS, ADSA, AMSA, and CAST; he served as president of CAST, ADSA, and FASS. He served as Chair of the Committee of Animal Nutrition of the National Academies, Chair of the Board of Life Sciences Research Office, Chair of the Committee on NRC Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats, and as a member of the National Animal Nutrition Program of the USDA. In addition, Dr. Beitz has organized the Iowa State University Reception at the annual meetings of the Experimental Biology and of the ADSA/ASAS for nearly 50 years.

Dr. Beitz has had a very rewarding career of teaching and research in nutritional biochemistry. He is proud to have

worked with numerous undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctorates, and visiting scientists to study many

different problems in animal agriculture and nutrition. His greatest pride, however, has been to participate in the

scientific and personal development of his students. Current extracurricular activities include leadership activities in

the Ames Historical Society, Ames Town and Country Kiwanis Club, and Memorial Lutheran Church. He is an avid fan

of the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers, and the Iowa State Cyclones. Most of all, he is very

proud of his lovely wife Judy, two children and five grandchildren.
