UNAI MEMBER ACTIVITY REPORT 2016/2017 National University of Sciences and Technology Pakistan During the 2016/2017 reporting period, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) a number of activities that underscore its commitment to UNAI and its principles. The following examples stand out as particularly noteworthy: In particular, NUST’s Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS), which conducts research and training in matters related to UN Peacekeeping Operations, organized a series of events and conferences relevant to the UNAI principles. 1. A team from Global Peace Centre Canada (CPCC) visited CIPS on 15 February 2015. Team members included Professor Lowel Ewert Director of Peace and Conflict Studies and Dennis Gingrich from Conrad Grebel University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, Professor Timothy Donais and Dr. Ali Zaidi from Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo and Professor Jahan Zeb, Executive Director, Global Peace Centre Canada. It was an educational visit to identify the Working Group's priorities for 2016-18, develop a joint Plan of Action for the co-development of peace education curriculum, facilitate lectures on peace and conflict studies, global studies and the exchange of students, teachers and researchers and agree on the division of labour. 2. Deputy Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations Visit to CIPS: Maj Gen Adrian Foster, Deputy Military Adviser Peacekeeping Operations, UNDPKO visited CIPS on 29 April 2016 and called on Principal NIPCONS. He was briefed about CIPS and later he visited the classes of UNLOC-8. He showed keen interest and appreciated the training standards.

During the 2016/2017 reporting period, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) a number of activities that underscore its commitment to UNAI and its principles. The following examples stand out as particularly noteworthy:

3. UN Military Observer Course (UNMOC-11) & UN Staff Officer Course:

UN Military Observer Course-11 and UN Staff Officer Course (UNSOC-10 were organized by CIPS from 7 to 18 March and 4 to 15 Apr 2016 respectively. Diplomats, defense attachés and representatives of UN agencies attended the opening and closing ceremonies of the courses. Collectively, 30 officers from Pakistan Army and 11 foreign officers from China, Germany, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria and Sri Lanka attended

the two weeks courses.

4. UN Military Observer Course (UNMOC-13) & UN Staff Officer Course:

UN Military Observer Course (UNMOC-11) and UN Staff Officer Course (UNSOC-10) were organized in CIPS during September and October 2016 respectively. Diplomats, defense attachés and representatives of UN agencies attended the opening and closing ceremonies of the courses. 13 Pakistani officers and 11 foreign officers belonging to Egypt, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Thailand attended the two weeks long courses.

5. International Conference on the Role of Diplomacy in Maintaining International Peace and Stability: An International Round-table Conference was held at CIPS on 5 Oct 2016. A group of retired Ambassadors shared their experiences on the subject.

6. A Talk by Ambassador Ashraf Jahangir Qazi: Ambassador Ashraf Jahangir Qazi was invited on 12 January 2017 to deliver a talk on "Development in Syria & Iraq and Implications for Pakistan"

7. UN Police Training Course: The training course was run by this Centre during 6-10 February 2017. 39 DSP officers attended the course.

8. Protection of Civilians (POC) Course: UN POC course was run by this Centre from 19 December to 29 December 2016. The course ended with a formal closing ceremony which was attended by reps of UN Organizations, many Defense Attaches, members from Academia and others. Additional Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Tasnim Aslam was the Chief Guest who awarded the certificates to the successful participants.

9. UN Logistic Officer Course: UN Logistic Officer course was held from 30 January to 3 February. Four army officers attended the course

10. UN Military Observer Course-14: UN Military Observer course-14 was held from 13-24 February. 13 officers including two from Egypt and Sri Lanka attended the course.

11. UN Train the Trainers Course -15 & UN Contingent Commanders’ Course: UN Train the Trainers Course-15 and UN Contingent Commanders’ Course-10 was held from 6-17 March. Strength of both courses was 33.

12. Allied Officers of National Security and War Course NDU Visit to CIPS: An NDU Islamabad delegation headed by Brig Hammad and Air Cdre Afzal visited CIPS on 24 March 2017. They were accompanied by 43 foreign officers from 25 friendly countries. They were given a comprehensive briefing on NUST and CIPS, followed by a visit to some of the schools of the University and ORIC.

13. Seminar on Beyond Boundaries: Pak-Afghan Track 1.5/2 Initiative: CIPS and Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) jointly organized a seminar on Pak-Afghan Bilateral Relations on 29 March. The session was opened by Mr. Imtiaz Gul, the Director of CRSS. This was followed by short speeches by Mr. Khalid Pushtoon, formerly of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Afghanistan, Ms. Elay Ershad, Afghan parliamentarian and chairperson of the Committee on Education, Higher Education, Cultural Affairs and Religious Affairs Afghanistan, Ms. Ayesha Gulalai Wazir, member National Assembly from FATA and former Ambassador of Pakistan to Afghanistan Qazi Hummayun. ۔

14. Lecture by Brig Mowadat Rana: Brigadier Mowadat Rana was invited by PCS department to deliver a lecture on “Psychosocial Consequences of Living in a Conflict Zone” on 7 March 2017

15. UN Train the Trainers Course -17: UN Train the Trainers Course-17 (UNTTC) was held from 1-12 May 2017.

16. Visit of the Zimbabwe National Defence University Delegation to Peacekeeping Training Dept/ CIPS: A 25 Member delegation of National Defence University Zimbabwe, headed by Brigadier General T J Munongwa, Senior Directing staff visited Peacekeeping Training Department at CIPS/ NUST Islamabad on 04 June 2017.

17. A United Nations Staff Observer Officer Course – 13: A United Nations Integrated Training Service (UNITS) certified Staff Officers Course was run at Peacekeeping Training Department, CIPS from 17 April to 28 April 2017. This course had twenty six participants which included sixteen from Pakistan Armed Forces and Ten Foreign participants. Foreign participants were from Thailand, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Egypt and Bangladesh. For the first time, three Lady Police Officers Peacekeepers from Thailand also attended the course.

18. Visit of The Kenya Delegation of National Defense College During their Foreign Study Tour To Peacekeeping Training Departments: A 14 Member Kenya National Defense Course delegation led by Maj General A K IKen, Deputy Commandant (Military) visited Peacekeeping Training Department at CIPS/ NUST Islamabad on 12 April 2017.

19. Visit Dr. Christine M. Leah: Dr. Christine M. Leah visited CIPS on 11 April 2017 to discuss relationship between nuclear and conventional arms control in South Asia and China. Dr Yamin presented her his book “The Evolution of Nuclear Deterrence in South Asia.”.

20. UN Staff Officer Course-14: UN Staff Officer Course-14 (UNSOC) was held from 3-14 July 2017. 14 x army officer and 14 x JCOs/NCS attended the course.

21. UN Military Observer Course-15: UN Military Observer Course -15 (UNMOC) was held from 15-25 August 2017. 20 x army officers attended the course

22. Visit Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS): A four member delegation of CASS visited CIPS on 8 August 2017. The delegation was headed by Prof Wang Weiguang. The Professor is the President Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and is also the member of the Chinese Communist Party.

23. International Conference on Refugee Crises: Lessons from Pakistan and Beyond: The conference was organized by CIPS with collaboration of Hans Seidel Foundation (HSF) on 10-11 July 2017. Renowned national and international scholars, researchers, diplomats, armed forces personnel and practitioners participated in the conference.

24. UN Staff Officer Course-15VI: UN Staff Officer Course-15 (UNSOC) was held from 18-29 September 2017. 14 x army officer attended the course.

25. Kazakhstan Delegation Visit -CIPS-NUST: A Three member delegation from Kazakhstan headed by Col Dovganyuk Anatoliy Andreevich Deputy Chief of Department of Combat Training visited Peacekeeping Training Dept/ CIPS on 25 Oct 2017.

26. Uzbekistan Delegations Visit -CIPS-NUST: A 10 member delegation from Uzbekistan headed by Lt Col Isakolov Dilmurad Ollomuradovich, Hd of Intl Mil Coop and Dy Def Minister visited Peacekeeping Training Dept/ CIPS on 25 Oct 2017.
