Judging from the fantastic response we’ve already received from our subscription renewals, our audiences are as excited about the 2017-18 Evansville Philharmonic season as the musicians and I are! We’ve pulled out all the stops to give the Tri-State a truly wonderful lineup of concerts starting with the unparalleled dexterity of Béla Fleck in our opening concert in September. Fully-staged grand opera returns to the Victory Theatre in November with Verdi’s masterpiece La Traviata. After the holidays you won’t want to miss January’s Mozart AND the Jungle concert featuring one of America’s best known pianists, Misha Dichter, joined by his wife Cipa as they perform Mozart’s Two Piano Concerto. In February, we bring you Bach, Beethoven & Brahms and wrap up our Classics season in April with Carl Orff’s powerful and colorful Carmina Burana. For our Saturday Pops opener we transform the Victory Theatre into “A Night at The Cotton Club” with trumpeter Byron Stripling and company. We open our Sunday Pops with some of the best female vocal talent from Broadway, with “Wicked Divas”. Of course, no Pops season in Evansville is complete without our Peppermint Pops, but our newest holiday tradition is a concert to celebrate Valentine’s Day, this year with none other than Tony DeSare, a bona fide heartthrob singer and pianist. We end the Pops season with The Movie Music of John Williams, certainly the greatest film composer of our time. Our St. Patrick’s Day Celebration is part of our Classics series, but really is a cross-over concert featuring light classical and pops music inspired by the Emerald Isle and bringing one of the most rapidly rising violinists on the concert scene, Nathan Meltzer, to the Victory stage. I hope you’ll join me and the musicians of the Orchestra throughout 2017-18 for A Season of Wonder-ful Music!

TOYOTA’S OPENING NIGHT: BANJO TO BOLÉROBéla Fleck, BanjoSaturday, September 23, 2017, 7:00 p.m.Guest Artist Sponsor: Martha & Merritt deJong Foundation
Jacques Offenbach Overture to Orpheus in the UnderworldBéla Fleck Banjo Concerto No. 1, “The Impostor” Richard Strauss Der Rosenkavalier Suite Maurice Ravel Boléro
A banjo player to open the 2017-2018 season of the Evansville Philharmonic? Yes, but only if he is world-renowned American banjo player, Béla Fleck! Enjoy the artistic mastery of this truly unique musician as he performs his own composition, Banjo Concerto No. 1, “The Impostor.” How he expands the role of banjo beyond bluegrass is nothing short of amazing!
Works by Richard Strauss and Jacques Offenbach kick off the Classics Series by incorporating two of the most popular dances of the 19th century – the Waltz and the Can Can.
Ravel’s iconic Boléro (featured in the movie 10) is one of symphonic music’s greatest hits. A simple, haunting theme is introduced in its purest form and repeated in one ingenious 13-minute crescendo, while instrument after instrument of the orchestra join in with increasingly hypnotic and ornate variations.

Opera returns to the Victory stage with some of the most dramatic vocal and instrumental music ever written. Verdi’s La Traviata is a timeless favorite that explores the extremes of emotion from exuberant celebration to unbridled passion and the ultimate sacrifice for love.

Hear some of the great music of Mozart, from his early Overture to Il Ré Pastore to his more mature masterwork, the “Haffner” Symphony No. 35.
Legendary pianist Misha Dichter is joined by his wife and partner Cipa to perform the charming and rarely performed Concerto for Two Pianos.
Carnival of the Animals is a whimsical work depicting a musical jungle with lions, tortoises, elephants, kangaroos, and The Swan, whose gracefulness is expressively portrayed by the cello.
University of Evansville History Professor/Political Cartoonist James MacLeod brings the characters to life, reading the delightful verses inspired by Saint-Saëns’ music.
