Roncalli is the only state accredited high school in the State of Indiana to have earned the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

Award on three separate occasions.

HISTORYRoncalli High School, a co-educational high school, has a long, rich and proud heritage of

Catholic education. Its tradition of service to Indianapolis’ south side extends back more than 90 years with the founding of Sacred Heart High School which, in 1966, was renamed John F. Kennedy Memorial High School.

Bishop Chartrand High School was opened in 1962 to serve the growing needs of the suburban south, and soon a vigorous rivalry was born between the two schools.

In 1969 the facilities of these two schools were merged and a new institution was created to provide the very best in educational opportunities. The new school was named (by the students) Roncalli High School in memory of Angelo Roncalli, who is more widely known as Saint John XXIII.

Roncalli High School is a four year inter-parochial high school operated by the Roncalli High School Board of Directors under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Roncalli High School is accredited by the Indiana State Department of Education and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Our school is located in a residential, suburban community of Marion County (in Indianapolis) and is approximately ten miles from the center of downtown Indianapolis.

The high school has been recognized three times as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education and the service program earned the “Set A Good Example Award” from the Concerned Businessmen’s Association while the Department of Education bestowed a Special Emphasis Award for the Service Learning program. Roncalli was recognized with an Innovation in Education Award by the National Catholic Education Association in 2012. Most currently, Roncalli was named a Four Star School.

CURRICULUMCollege preparatory subjects are strongly emphasized, however a limited number of general and vocational classes are offered. The average class has 16 students. Ability grouping is used in the academic areas of English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Additionally, an Honors Program is offered (designated by Level III or HON on the transcript), as well as 12 dual credit courses (designated as DC) and 20 Advanced Placement courses (designated as Level IV or AP). The school day lasts 7.5 hours, and most students attend seven classes but have an option to enroll in eight courses.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND DUAL CREDIT COURSESAdvanced Placement and Dual Credit courses are not open enrollment at Roncalli, and every student enrolled in an Advanced Placement course must take the corresponding Advanced Placement exam. Advanced Placement courses available within the curriculum include: English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics 1, Physics 2, Government & Politics, Psychology, US History, World History, Statistics, Calculus AB, Studio Art- 2D Design, Studio Art, 3D Design, Studio Art- Drawing, Music Theory, French Language, German Language, and Spanish Language.For the 2016-2017 school year, 303 students took AP exams, and 599 exams were given. Scores will be available in Fall 2017. For the 2015-2016 school year, 315 students took AP courses, and 618 AP exams were given. On those exams, 74% scored with a 3, 4, or a 5 on the AP exam. Dual Credit courses within the curriculum include Anatomy and Physiology (HON/DC), Adv. English 11 (HON/DC), Adv. English 12 (HON/DC), U.S. History (AP), U.S. Government (HON/DC), Government (AP), French 3 (HON/DC), French 4 (HON/DC), Spanish 3 (HON/DC).

The Academic Honors Diploma with Distinction is unique to Roncalli High School and establishes Roncalli’s highest standard of academic excellence. The Academic Honors Diploma with Distinction has two criteria:

;The student must enroll in at least 24 semesters of honors level coursework (HON or ACC) over the four years of high school. ;The student must earn a 4.0 or higher accumulated grade point average. The AGPA will be designated at the end of the seventh semester of a student’s high school career.
