as its histOry gOes Back

tO its fOunding in 1893.

A Canon Adam Gray Maitland came to the district from Scotland and was installed as the vicar at St Thomas’s church known as top church. Being a devotee of the Royal and Ancient game he was dismayed and disappointed to learn that there was no golf course situated in the locality.

he at Once set aBOut putting this state Of affairs right and his eyes fell upOn what was knOwn as ‘the Old park’, the area knOwn nOw as the

russells hall estate and after many discussiOns it was decided tO call in his friend frOm scOtland, the gOlfing legend ‘Old’ tOm mOrris tO set aBOut designing a cOurse.

He was also responsible for the golf courses at Muirfield, Prestwick and Carnoustie, not bad company for a little black country area. The great man duly arrived and apparently in no time at all, the course was built and with the Earl of Dudley as its first president

and a certain Mr Hugh Kirkaldy installed as the first professional, the golf club came into being.

The lease on the original course came to an end in 1927 and the present course was made over what is geographically called the Rough Hills known locally as Rowley Hills. These hills, the remains of long gone volcanic eruptions are mainly of rock which over the thousands of years covered itself with a soft grass which helps make the course so attractive and such a fine test of golf.

The exceptional panoramic views from the course are stunning indeed showing the Black Country at its best and even further afield on clear days to the Black Mountains in Wales. Its also said that from the 8th green the next nearest highest point after the West Bromwich Albion Football ground are the Ural Mountains in Russia!

hOle 7 WT: 199 yards YT: 180 yards Par 3 SI: 5The third hole of Amen Corner and probably the most difficult of the three with very little room for manoeuvre. A par here is a great score.

hOle 8 WT: 298 yards YT: 291 yards Par 4 SI: 15A straight forward uphill hole to the very top of the course with outstanding views across several counties to the west and the next nearest highest point being the Ural mountains in Russia!

hOle 9 WT: 388 yards YT: 382 yards Par 4 SI: 4Keep your tee shot slightly left to a tight fairway sloping left to right. Also keep your second shot left as everything falls right onto the green.

hOle 10 WT: 322 yards YT: 310 yards SI: 10A straight forward hole onto a slightly raised green, be careful when the wind blows.

hOle 11 WT: 173 yards YT: 163 yards SI: 14Again a straightaway shot with bunkers either side to be aware of.

Hole 12: WT: 269 yards YT: 264 yards SI: 18A good drive to a generous fairway and a short pitch shot to a sloping green. If the wind is behind it may be possible to hit the green with a good tee shot.

hOle 1 WT: 483 yards YT: 473 yards Par 5 SI: 11A straight tee shot is required to a long left sweeping fairway followed by a club of choice for the second shot and then careful consideration is required for the shot to a sloping green.

hOle 2 WT: 257 yards YT: 257 yards Par 4 SI: 17A steady tee shot followed by an accurate pitch to a narrow raised green.

hOle 3 WT: 443 yards YT: 433 yards Par 4 SI: 1A difficult blind straight tee shot and the further the drive the narrower the fairway becomes with an horizontal dry ditch across the fairway to take into account followed by another long shot into a narrow mouthed green with bunkers either side.

hOle 4 WT: 143 yards YT: 131 yards Par 3 SI: 9Our own postage stamp hole with a bunker across the front to contend with.

hOle 5 WT: 425 yards YT: 415 yards Par 4 SI: 3A steady shot onto the top of a plateau fairway with a downhill shot onto the green. The first hole of our Amen Corner.

hOle 6 WT: 182 yards YT: 174 yards Par 4 SI: 13A long difficult hole to a right to left sloping green. Say a prayer if a downhill putt is required especially in the summer.

hOle 13WT: 523 yards YT: 452 yards SI: 8A similar hole to the first with a late dogleg left after one or two downhill shots to a generous green

hOle 14 WT: 174 yards YT: 168 yards SI: 16A slightly downhill green requires an accurate tee shot for par.

hOle 15 WT: 304 yards YT: 298 yards SI: 7A short par four but uphill ground makes it longer than you think. Correct club selection is vital to hit the green.

hOle 16 WT: 436 yards YT: 430 yards SI: 2Very much as the third hole this long par four is very tough for higher handicappers with the ditch coming into play just before the green.

hOle 17 WT: 416 yards YT: 406 yards SI: 6Running parallel to the sixteenth but not quite so difficult but a par requires four good shots.

hOle 18 WT: 318 yards YT: 308 yards SI: 12A slight dogleg left to a green guarded by left and right front of green bunkers brings you home.

The Prosser Bar is our social bar, so called as a tribute to our still active member Darren Prosser who represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup. Both bars are fully stocked and food is available for most of the club opening hours.
