ADVANCED PLACEMENT EUROPEAN HISTORY (SM) - READING SCHEDULE 2017-18 TEXTS: Jackson J. Speilvolgel, Western Civilization, Fifth Ed., Wadsworth/Thompson Learning Co., Belmont, 2003. Documents of Western Civilization, vols. 1 & 2, Jackson J. Spielvogel TEACHER: Jack Lawrence La Jolla High School The days assigned for each chapter include a test or activity on the last day scheduled for that chapter (note the date as the day of the week varies). In order to keep up with this reading schedule, students will need to plan on five to seven pages of reading every night. This schedule is for the text book reading and test dates only, primary source document reading and other secondary sources will be added. I will assume that the reading is taking place by each student according to the schedule. Quizzes based on the reading schedule, as well as other assigned reading, will be given periodically. Our schedule is very tight. We will stick to it as much as possible so that all of the necessary curriculum is covered prior to the AP Exam which is Friday, May 18, 2018. If we are forced to postpone a test by a day due to extenuating circumstances, the following chapter schedule will have one day less to cover the chapter. Should we find ourselves multiple days behind schedule, independent work may be assigned over vacations or weekends. Having the schedule in advance like this allows for students that miss school due to illness, athletic or other school events, or family trips to stay on pace with the reading. 8/28-9/6 Chapter 11 The Late Middle Ages A Time of Troubles: Black Death and Social Crisis 273 War and Political Instability 280 The Decline of the Church 289 The Cultural World of the Fourteenth Century 293 Society in an Age of Adversity 296 9/7-9/22 Chapter 12 Recovery and Rebirth: The Age of the Renaissance The Making of Renaissance Society 302 The Italian States in the Renaissance 309 The Intellectual Renaissance in Italy 315 The Artistic Renaissance 319 The European State in the Renaissance 327 The Church in the Renaissance 331 9/25 -10/5 Chapter 13 Reformation and Religious Warfare in the Sixteenth Century Prelude to Change: The Northern Renaissance 336 Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany 340 The Spread of the Protestant Reformation 347 The Social Impact of the Protestant Reformation 353 The Catholic Reformation 356 10/6 -10/13 Chapter 14 Europe and the World: New Encounters 1500 - 1800
