In the 2017-2018 academic year, Tsinghua SEM has a total of 1,782 graduates, including 252 undergraduates, 495 under-graduates for the second degree, 980 master’s degree students (including MBA and EMBA), and 55 doctoral students.

The 2017-2018 academic year is the twelfth academic year I served as Dean of Tsinghua SEM. Over the past years, the School has devoted to educational reform and innovation and made significant progresses. In this year’s Annual Report, I focus on general education in undergraduate programs and innovations in business education, and give an update on the School’s Advisory Board.

The 9 Years of General Education in Undergraduate Programs

The School started to prepare the undergraduate program reform in 2007. It launched a new undergraduate curriculum in the fall semester of 2009. Up to now, it has been through 9 years. General education and individual development are the two prongs in the undergraduate program reform, and the intro-duction of general education represents a fundamental change.

The new courses in the general education curriculum include “Chinese Writing”, “Introduction to Communication”, “Chinese Civilization”, “Western Civilization”, “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning”, “History of Physics” and “History of Life Sciences”.

The two courses, “Chinese Writing” and “Introduction to Commu-nication”, started in the fall semester of 2009, which are among the first at Tsinghua and even across the country. On May 17, 2018, QIU Yong, President of Tsinghua University, announced that Tsinghua will launch a required course of “Writing and Commu-nication” for the incoming freshmen class in the fall of 2018 and will gradually cover all undergraduates by 2020. The School’s ex-periences in the two courses of “Chinese Writing” and “Introduc-tion to Communication” provide a valuable pilot to the University.

“Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning” became a required course starting for the undergraduates of Tsinghua SEM enrolled in 2009, and the students call it “CTMR” for short. This course combines critical thinking with moral ethics. In this course, students read classics and debate hot topics, from questioning to collecting evi-dence, and from logical reasoning to examining alternative expla-nations. Each year around this time, I ask the graduating seniors of Tsinghua SEM the following question: “Which course has the most impact on you in the last four years?” The most common answers I heard are “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning”. Now CTMR is representing Tsinghua SEM, and SEM students often ask each other: “Have you CTMRed on this issue?”

In the spring semester of 2018, two new courses of “History of Physics” and “History of Life Sciences” were added. Unlike the traditional introductory courses in physics and life sciences, these two new courses focus on the historical context of major scientific discoveries, the challenges of science to the society, and the impact of science on philosophy. These courses help Tsinghua SEM alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends,

students understand the essence of science rather than specific formulae or experiments, emphasizing on the spirit of science, the value of science, as well as the limits of science.

It is now becoming a consensus among Chinese universities that undergraduate education should put more emphasis on general education. However, the key to general education lies in its imple-mentation. During the past 9 years, the School has been consis-tently devoted to the practice and refinement of general educa-tion. This is not easy, as the School is often regarded as the “most practical” one while general education is viewed as “least prac-tical”. On July 4, 2018, the School released a report entitled “The ‘Chinese Writing’ and ‘Introduction to Communication’: 9 years of Thinking and Practice at Tsinghua SEM”, summarizing its 9-year experience. On July 5, 2018, in my Commencement Address at Tsinghua University School of Life Sciences, I emphasized the im-portance of cultivating students’ critical thinking ability in higher education, and I gave specific examples of the courses “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning” as well as “History of Life Sci-ences” and “History of Physics” at Tsinghua SEM. On July 8, 2018, PAN Jian-Wei, a noted physicist, delivered the Tsinghua SEM Commencement Speech on “The Value of Science”, who is the first scientist ever invited to speak since Tsinghua SEM started to hold its school-wide commencement in 2010.

The 5 Years of Tsinghua x-lab for Education on Creativity, Inno-vation and Entrepreneurship

In 2011, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of inauguration of MBA education in China, the School started its exploration on innovation in business education. After 2 years’ preparation, on April 25, 2013, the School launched Tsinghua x-lab, jointly with more than 10 schools and departments at Tsinghua University. It has been in practice for 5 years till now. On June 14,2018, at the bi-annual conference of International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR) held in Wuhan, I delivered a speech entitled “Thoughts and Practice in Business Education Innovation: The 5-year Experience of Tsinghua x-lab”, which was very favorably reacted from the participants.

From the very beginning, we positioned Tsinghua x-lab as an educational platform for creativity, innovation and entrepreneur-ship. The reason why we put creativity before innovation is that we believe in the cultivation of creative thinking and ability. Although there is quite a few numbers of very good start-ups originally from Tsinghua x-lab, the positioning of Tsinghua x-lab is always centered on educating talents, rather than incubating projects and start-ups.

Tsinghua x-lab deviated from the traditional business education mode to successfully build three platforms: the educational platform for students, the development platform for team build-ing, and the ecological platform for resource aggregation and interdisciplinary education.

• The educational platform for students. It provides several programs for Tsinghua students: an honors program in entre-preneurship for SEM undergraduates; a track in innovation,

economics and management education in China and on stimu-lating exchanges and cooperation between China and the rest of the world.

Among the 38 participating members of the Advisory Board who attended the meeting with President XI are Jim Breyer, Chair-man of Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board, Founder and CEO of Brey-er Capital, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, Maurice Greenberg, Chair-man of Starr Companies, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, Henry Paulson, Chairman of Paulson Institute, Stephen Schwartzman, Chairman and CEO of Blackstone, Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook, as well as Robin Li of Baidu, Jack Ma of Alibaba and Pony Ma of Tencent. The event was broadcast on the prime time of CCTV News and was published on the front pages of major media on the following day.

Today’s remarkable development of the School owes to the foun-dation laid by former deans Premier ZHU Rongji, ZHAO Chunjun and HE Jiankun and to the contributions made by the faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends. I truly believe that with all your con-tinuing supports, Tsinghua SEM will have a more beautiful future.

entrepreneurship and leadership for the non-SEM undergrad-uates pursuing second-degree in management; and the cer-tificate of creativity education for graduate students. The value of these programs lies in three aspects: 1) Interdisciplinary studies across 15 schools and departments at Tsinghua which are member schools of Tsinghua x-lab and cover the disciplines in science, engineering, medicine, humanities and arts. 2) Integration of resources outside the university, including profes-sional organizations, investment firms, Tsinghua Entrepreneurs Association, Tsinghua Science Park, Tsinghua Holdings and its enterprises. 3) Provision of realization paths of business models and social value for student projects.

• The development platform for team building. We focus on the early entrepreniual mode teams and the cultivation of experi-ential learnings. We have initiated an annual university-wide innovation competition named “The President’s Cup” for the students and alumni of Tsinghua, which has been held to the 5th session till now.

• The ecological platform. Over the 5 years, Tsinghua x-lab has developed into an ecosystem. There are hundreds of investment institutions, 15 innovation centers and functional service cen-ters, which continue to help the teams.

YANG Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, in his speech at the 5th anniversary of Tsinghua x-lab, highlighted the following 4 key aspects that Tsinghua x-lab has inspired the education of creative talents: 1) It is necessary to combine the logic of knowledge with the logic of action to cultivate creative talents; 2) It is necessary to adopt a comprehensive learning model for interdisciplinary learning, multiple integrations and open linkages; 3) It is necessary to have industry coaches and practical mentors to supplement the traditional faculty in teaching; 4) It is necessary to integrate education on leadership, creativity, thought leadership, and execution to enhance stu-dents’ self-motivation and self-management.

Fostering creative talents will be a focus in China’s education in the future. For management schools, it is our duty to cultivate creative, innovative and entrepreneurial talents. The schools of management should not only educate talents for large corpora-tions as in the past but also educate startup talents and entre-preneurial talents for all kinds of enterprises.

The 18th Advisory Board Meeting

On October 30, 2017, the Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board held its 18th annual meeting since its inception in October 2000. In the afternoon, President of China XI Jinping met with the partici-pating members of the Advisory Board at the Great Hall of the People. This is the first time that President XI has met with overseas guests since the conclusion of the 19th CPC National Congress. During the meeting, President XI listened to the sug-gestions from the Board members and gave his interpretation of the Party report. President XI praised the contributions made by the Advisory Board members on fostering the development of

On May 17, 2018, at the first “Tsinghua Teaching Forum“, QIU Yong, President of Tsinghua University, announced that Tsinghua would launch a required course “Writing and Communication” for the incoming freshmen class in the fall of 2018 and would gradually cover all undergraduates by 2020. This decision was widely praised after the news was released.

On July 8, 2018, Xinya College of Tsinghua University held its first graduation ceremony. In his speech, YANG Bin, Vice Pres-ident and Provost of Tsinghua University gave three keywords to the graduates of Class 2018: “original intention”, “inaugural class”, and “XinyaING”. ZHENG Li, Vice President of Tsinghua University and the founding Dean of Xinya College, said that the key to the education model of Xinya is general education and its related activities.

Tsinghua SEM has been active in all these areas for the last 9 years since 2009, whether it is the launch of the courses of “Chinese Writing” and “Introduction to Communication”, or the incorporation of general education into the undergraduate cur-riculum. In fact, on August 27, 2009, at the opening ceremony of Tsinghua SEM undergraduates Class 2013, Dean QIAN Yingyi launched a new undergraduate curriculum featured with “an integration of general education with individual development”. In 2014, “An Integration of General Education with Individual De-velopment - Thoughts and Practice of Reform in Economics and Management Undergraduate Education”, led by 5 professors, QIAN Yingyi, BAI Chong-En, YANG Bin, ZHU Yujie and ZHONG Xiaohan, won the first prize of national-level education achieve-ment. This is the only national reward in the field of education in China. In the past 9 years, Tsinghua SEM has been making steady progresses in general education in its undergraduate’s curriculum reform.

The Reform of Undergraduate Education –Thinking before Action

In 2008 and early 2009, the School organized several workshops and interviewed students, alumni, and faculty of the School to prepare for the undergraduate curriculum reform. In the meantime, the School also studied the undergraduate education reform experiences from other universities in China, including Yuanpei College of Peking University, Fudan College of Fudan University and Chu Kochen Honors College of Zhejiang Univer-sity. It also studied undergraduate education programs in some overseas universities, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, UC Berkeley,

The 9 Years of General Education in Tsinghua SEM Undergraduate Programs

University of Chicago, Williams College, and Cambridge Univer-sity. Based on these findings, the School has developed a new undergraduate curriculum for Class 2013. It is a program to aim at the world-class undergraduate education while maintaining the existing advantages of Tsinghua and SEM and absorbing the useful experiences of other domestic and overseas universities.

General Education Becomes the Foundation of Undergraduate

Education

The new undergraduate curriculum was launched in the fall of 2009. It is a three-prong education program of “value formation, capability development and knowledge acquisition”. The cur-riculum courses consist of general education courses, courses satisfying major’s requirement, and electives. The curriculum maintains 140 credits in total required by the university, but increased general education to 70 credits, reduced major’s re-quirement to 50 credits, and left the other 20 credits to elective courses.

In its implementation, the School has emphasized in three ar-eas: Making general education as the foundation of undergrad-uate curriculum, accounting for the main parts of the courses in freshmen and sophomore years; introducing the selective “Honors Programs” in three tracks (academic, entrepreneur-ship and leadership); and making the cultivation of students’ critical thinking ability as a key and to run through the entire undergraduate curriculum.

The general education curriculum introduced by the School since the fall semester of 2009 consists of three categories of courses: in addition to the nationally required ideological and political courses, there are two categories of basic skills cours-es and core courses. In the basic skills courses, in addition to the courses of English and mathematics, the emphasis is on the newly launched two courses “Chinese Writing” and “Introduc-tion to Communication”, which is a pilot at Tsinghua, and even among colleges and universities nationwide.

The core courses consist of 8 groups, covering humanities, so-cial sciences and natural sciences. Unlike some of the univer-sity offered general education courses, these 8 groups do not include any courses in applied and practical disciplines, be-cause we believe that general education is not just for widening knowledge, but also for the benefits of the students in the long run. Therefore, the 8 groups selected by the School are: Chinese Civilization, Western Civilization, Critical Thinking and Moral

2017-2018 Annual ReportTsinghua University School of Economics and Management

In June 2018, the 8th bi-annual conference of International Asso-ciation for Chinese Management Research (IACMR) was held in Wuhai, hosted by the Economics and Management School of Wu-han University. At the “Dean’s Forum”, LIU Qiao, Dean of Guang-hua School of Management of Peking University, WEI Jiang, Dean of School of Management of Zhejiang University, CAI Hongbin, Dean of Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Hong Kong, and QIAN Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM, have deliv-ered speeches on the theme of “Challenges and Opportunities in Business Education”. Dean LIU Qiao talked about “The Challeng-es and Opportunities of Business Education under the New Trend of Globalization”, Dean WEI Jiang spoke on “Whether Traditional Business Schools Will Be Overturned?” Dean CAI Hongbin ad-dressed on “The Development and Prospect of Business Educa-tion in China”, and Dean QIAN Yingyi’s speech entitled “Thoughts and Practice of Innovation in Business Education: The 5-Year Experience of Tsinghua x-lab”.

Dean QIAN started by asking the questions of “What” and “How” of facing the innovation of business education in China. He then pointed out that the focus of business education is in the process of shifting from “Business” and “Management” to “Leadership” and “Entrepreneurship” in what to teach and also in how to teach, from teaching by lectures and teaching with cases to experiential learning and action learning.

By taking the case of 5-year development of Tsinghua x-lab, Dean QIAN demonstrated both “what to teach” and “how to teach” in the innovation of business education that are addressed at Tsinghua SEM. He said Tsinghua x-lab is our attempt to cultivate talents with entrepreneurship and leadership, and educating cre-ative business talents is the future direction of Chinese business education. Dean QIAN’s speech resonated very well among the audience, who considered that the 5-year experience of Tsinghua x-lab truly reflected the spirit of Tsinghua.

The Birth of Tsinghua x-lab

After nearly 2 years in preparation, on April 25, 2013, Tsinghua SEM launched Tsinghua x-lab jointly with more than 10 schools and departments of Tsinghua University, an educational platform for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. It serves the students, alumni and faculty at Tsinghua, with an emphasis on current stu-dents. HU Heping, the then Party Secretary of Tsinghua University, addressed at the opening ceremony of Tsinghua x-lab.

Reasoning (CTMR), Art and Aesthetics, Basic Social Sciences, China and the World, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences.

Achievements in the General Education for Undergraduate

Education

Although the importance of general education in undergraduate education is becoming a consensus among Chinese universities, difficulty is in its implementation. Lack of qualified faculty is the number one problem. “It is hard to find instructors for Western Civilization in Beijing, and it is even harder to find instructors for Chinese Civilization and Chinese Writing “, said Dean QIAN Yingyi, “The current policy on faculty hiring is not conducive to teaching in general education “. The second difficulty is the stu-dents’ acceptance and devotion to general education courses. Some students are not motivated and do not spend much time on readings in general education courses.

Despite the difficulties, the School has made considerable progress in general education in the last 9 years. The courses of “Chinese Writing” and “Introduction to Communication” have been continuously improved. The fact that Tsinghua has decided to take “Writing and Communication” as a required course for all its undergraduate students demonstrates the recognition of the School’s pilot. The course “Critical Thinking and Moral Rea-soning (CTMR)” is the most innovative and successful course. Students would learn classics and debate hot topics, from questioning to collecting evidence and from logical reasoning to examining alternative explanations. Tsinghua SEM students often ask each other: “Have you CTMRed on this issue? “ If a CT (Computed Tomography) and a MR (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) are the two medical devices, then at Tsinghua SEM, CTMR is a thinking device. CTMR has become a special term for the School.

In the spring semester of 2018, “A Brief History of Physics” and “A Brief History of Life Sciences” were added to general educa-tion courses. These two courses focus on the historical context of major scientific discoveries, so that students can better understand the essence of science, rather than menorizing the details of formulae or experiments.

The general education has been through 9 years. According to Dean QIAN Yingyi, this is just a beginning. Perhaps, in 10 years, 20 years or even in longer time after students graduate, we can see the impact of general education on them.

On May 25, 2014, on the occasion of its one-year anniversary, the first university-wide innovation competition named “The Presi-dent Cup” was held. CHEN Jining, the then President of Tsinghua University, gave critical comments on the presenting teams and presented prizes to the winners.

The 5-year Development of Tsinghua x-lab

In the past 5 years, Tsinghua x-lab deviated from the traditional education model of business schools to build 3 platforms: the educational platform for students, the development platform for team building, and the ecological platform for resource aggrega-tion and interdisciplinary education.

• The educational platform for students. It provides several programs for Tsinghua students: an honors program in entrepre-neurship for SEM undergraduates; a track in innovation, entre-preneurship and leadership for the non-SEM undergraduates pursuing second-degree in management; and the certificate program of creativity education for graduate students. During 5 years, nearly 30,000 Tsinghua students and alumni have partici-pated in various courses, lectures, training camps and practical activities organized by Tsinghua x-lab.

• The development platform for team building. We focus on the early entrepreneurial mode of teams and the cultivation of expe-riential learnings. CHEN Jining, the then President of Tsinghua University, was very supportive to the inspiration of experiential learning. Since the first annual innovation competition “The President Cup” was held in 2014, it has come to its 5th session in 2018. A number of outstanding entrepreneurial teams have been cultivated in Tsinghua x-lab. In 5 years, over 1,200 teams and 494 start-ups developed, among them 159 received financing of 2.7 billion RMB in total. Tsinghua x-lab’s teams also won prizes in the domestic and overseas competitions.

• The ecological platform. At the beginning, a group of Tsinghua alumni became Angels-in-Residence and Entrepreneurs-in-Res-idence. Hundreds of institutions working with Tsinghua x-lab, which have expanded from banks to law firms, accounting firms, and intellectual property firms, and they provide not-for-profit services. The number of Tsinghua x-lab innovation centers and functional service centers has increased to 15 as well.

The Features of Tsinghua x-lab

Tsinghua x-lab has displayed the following features:

Firstly, promotion on interdisciplinary activities. We are active in guiding the students to combine art with science, to link engi-

neering with business, and to connect technology with production. We also encourage the students to learn managerial thinking, innovative and entrepreneurial thinking, and related skills and methods, so as to establish a complex cognitive system of “tech-nology + management”.

Secondly, advocation in experiential learning. Tsinghua x-lab used many experiential learning channels such as AI study, AI mara-thon, Innovate48 entrepreneurial marathon, x-Camp accelera-tion camp, x-Cute entrepreneurial camps, residential upgrading acceleration camp, environmental energy entrepreneurship acceleration camp, and medical innovation marathon to cultivate students’ ability.

Thirdly, collaborations with enterprises. Tsinghua x-lab invited Peter Thiel to teach the course of “Startup Thinking”; cooperated with Facebook on the course of “Innovation and Entrepreneur-ship: Insights from Silicon Valley; and developed the course jointly with Zhongguancun Development Group on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Insights from China”. Students from different departments and schools at Tsinghua worked together in inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural learning atmosphere to design business plans for innovative projects, went into enterprises for field studies, and experienced a shift from mental exercises at school to physical presence in the real world.

Fourthly, engagement with high-level business executives. A regular event of Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board member dialogues with Tsinghua students has been held in conjunction with the Advisory Board meeting annually. Dean QIAN Yingyi has had a series of “fireside chats” with noted entrepreneurs and business executives, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Face-book, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, ZHANG Yiming, Founder and CEO of Bytedance, and Neil Shen, Founding and Managing Partner of Sequoia China. Tsinghua x-lab also held “TED Frontier Science and Technology Forum”, “Aurora Borealis Innovation Seminar”, “ACT TALK: Art, Innovation and Technology Lectures” to inspire Tsinghua students.

Fifthly, international perspective. Students participate in summer camps of the European Institute of Innovation Academy (EIA) and the innovative and entrepreneurial teams took part in practices and studies in US, Germany, Israel, Singapore, Switzerland, India and other countries to explore the true meaning of international business.

The 5-year’s journey of Tsinghua x-lab is itself a startup process. We can say that Tsinghua x-lab has created an educational plat-form for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship with the simi-lar mindset and passion of creative and innovative entrepreneurs.
