  • Director’s Welcome

Duneira’s seventh owner, Stuart Rusden Stoneman, was born in Castlemaine in 1927. He was the only son of local businessman Thomas Stoneman and became the third generation of the Stoneman family to work in the grocery industry. Motivated by a grand vision and study undertaken overseas in 1950, Stuart returned to Castlemaine and implemented self-service grocery stores – eventually developing the business into the successful Stoneman’s Supermarket chain with additional stores in Bendigo, Echuca and Ballarat. Upon his death in 2002, Duneira was bequeathed to the care of The S.R. Stoneman Foundation to manage for the benefit of local and broader communities.

Stoneman’s vision for Duneira was to maintain and preserve Duneira, to open it to the public, on a smaller scale but in the spirit of the Huntington Collection in California, and for it to ‘continue

to be a place where people have the opportunity to learn and relax in an aesthetically cultivated environment; to enable interested individuals and groups to have access to the property; to view and examine the various collections and attractions; and in certain instances to enjoy suitable social and other functions.’

    About Stoneman and His Vision

Welcome to Duneira’s eighth year of events, and our Autumn program which runs from March to May.

Autumn starts early at Duneira because we are one of the highest situated gardens on the Mount. This year, as part of our events, we are opening our gardens from the 25 March for six

consecutive weekends when our famous heritage garden is at its most brilliant autumnal display.

There will be a myriad of activities, tours in Mandarin and English, and a small take-away service for refreshments served from the house.

On top of this we will provide our usual line up of excellent concerts and lectures by top gardening specialists. Bookings are on a first-come, first-served come basis so please make sure you book in early through our website.

We look forward to seeing you again at Duneira. Dr Jacqueline Ogeil

From Australia’s undisputed masters of a cappella wizardry comes a show chock-full of larrikanism and songs by Aussie artists, as fair-dinkum as the dog on the tuckerbox eating Vegemite while listening to Banjo Patterson sing “You’re the Voice”. Revel in the glorious sounds of Australia’s musical history from the 1930s right up to today, all without a single instrument in sight. Australia’s only multi-ARIA Award-winning a cappella ensemble will move you to laughter, tears and wonderment as you soak up their incredible arrangements, voices and perfomance. By the end of the concert, you’ll feel like you’ve known them all for years (and be happy about it)!

Enjoy this concert on the South Lawn at Duneira. Bring a picnic supper, drinks, blankets and chairs.

This concert will launch the 2017 Woodend Winter Arts Festival program.

This recital is the product of Grigoryan’s decades-long love affair with the Suites, music which has accompanied him throughout his life. Reflecting on Bach’s music, he says: “I’m constantly staggered by the universe of ideas in each movement of every Suite. The simplicity, the elegance, the structure and the spirit are simply breathtaking.”

Slava will play a specially-commissioned baritone guitar, whose lower pitch allows the Suites to be played in their original keys.

The event will commence with a glass of wine and refreshments.

Featuring trio sonatas of CPE Bach, Quantz, and Benda, Accademia Arcadia presents music written for the music-loving flute-playing Frederick the Great.

Frederick’s court boasted numerous pianos, all designed after the Cristofori model, and his court paused for an hour daily to listen to the monarch perform on the flute with the accompaniment of piano and/or other instruments. Hear Australia’s only copy of the original Cristofori piano c1730 used as a continuo instrument, and a composition by the King himself.

  • One of the real super-powers of gardens is to have one foot in eternity and one foot firmly in this very second. They call us to stop and engage – to seize the moment – while both acknowledging the past and wooing us into thinking about, and planning for, future joys.

Michael McCoy takes us on a journey of gardens worldwide that buck the trend towards low maintenance/low reward planting, and work towards making every moment count.

Duneira has an interesting collection of Asian plants. From plants used in traditional Chinese medicine, to trees of economic importance, to purely ornamental shrubs and flowers, Duneira’s Asian plant collection dates back to the original garden planting of the nineteenth century, and contains trees of national significance in Australia.

Simon will take you on a tour of the Duneira garden. Wear suitable shoes and meet at the front entrance of Duneira.
