IF I HAD YOUConstruction has begun on the RWJ Barnabas Health Athletic Perfor-mance Center at Rutgers University. Slated for completion in 2019, it will be built on the site of the existing parking lot southwest of the RAC and northwest of the Rutgers Business School. In addition to a sports medicine center, the building will provide a state-of-the-art practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and gymnastics. In 2016-17, the Harriett and Bob Druskin Strength and Conditioning Center, as well as the Abe Suydam men’s basketball locker room, were both dedicated at the RAC.

THE LAST DANCERutgers battled No. 3-ranked Michigan State for 40 minutes, but was un-able to find its shot in a 62-52 loss to the Spartans Tuesday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights limited MSU to a season-low 62 points and 38.6 percent shooting, well below its season average of 50.2 percent. Rutgers drew even with the Spartans in rebounds, as both squads grabbed 45 boards. It snapped a streak of six straight games MSU has out-rebounded its opponent. Deshawn Freeman had a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a team-high 13 points, falling one board shy of his 14th career double-double. Geo Baker and Eugene Omoruyi joined Freeman in double digits. Both posted 11 points in a contest that featured four ties and five lead changes.

COME FLY WITH MERutgers began this season the same way it concluded the last, with an emphasis on community service and giving back. Rutgers and St. John’s raised $15,000 for American Red Cross Disaster Relief via a charity exhibi-tion at the RAC on Nov. 5. The day prior (Nov. 4), the team hosted a clinic with the Special Olympics New Jersey unified basketball team that will

represent the Garden State at the 2018 Special Olympics USA games. On Nov. 7, players volunteered at Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen in New Bruns-wick as part of RLA’s Annual Week of Service. The kitchen serves almost 300 meals a day and over 100,000 meals a year to individuals who would otherwise go hungry. On Sept. 24, the team participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run. The event symbolizes Stephen Siller’s final footsteps from the foot of the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, and pays homage to the 343 FDNY firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and thousands of civil-ians who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Last season, men’s basketball had 100% team participation in Rutgers Leadership Academy community service initiatives. Joey Downes was one of nine student-athletes to travel to Honduras with the RLA in June to benefit Soles4Souls, a global not-for-profit dedicated to fighting poverty.

A FINE ROMANCE 2017-18 marks the 40th anniversary of the Rutgers Athletic Center. Men’s basketball has a 417-222 all-time record at the venue. Opened in 1977, the RAC has been dubbed, “louder than a 757 from nearby Newark.” The arena served as the home of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets from 1977 until 1981, when the Brendan Byrne Arena opened at the Meadowlands. The Grateful Dead played at the RAC on May 15, 1981 and are one of many musical groups to jam in Piscataway. The Allman Brothers, Frank Zappa, Cheap Trick, Supertramp, Steve Winwood, Styx and R.E.M. have also performed within its confines.

He’s a scorer that is going to do many tremendous things for us.” The John Carroll School Head Coach John Zito: “Montez is a super tough kid. He can really score the ball from all over the floor, from all three levels. He’s gotten much better over the last two years. He can really get to the basket, he can finish through contact, and he’s really good in the open floor. He’s a really good defender. His size and athleticism, along with his skill set allow him to do some things that a lot of guys can’t. “He’s just a great, great kid. He’s a little more on the quiet side, but is a really funny kid. He gets along really well with all his teammates. He’s very re-spectful and just a pleasure to be around.”

Shaq CARTER • F • 6-9 • 240 • Hollywood, Fla. • Eastern Florida State CollegeJunior College: A 2017-18 Preseason JUCO Super Sophs selection by Street & Smith’s … averaged 9.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks while shoot-ing 56.6 percent under head coach Jeremy Schulman at Eastern Florida State Coach in Melbourne (Fla.) in 2016-17 … helped the Titans to a 31-6 record and the NJCAA national title game ... led EFSC with 14 points and eight rebounds in the championship final … posted season high 26 points and 11 rebounds versus Broward … Titans opened the 2017-18 season ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll. Head Coach Steve Pikiell: “Shaq Carter is a player we identified early in the recruiting process. He’s an experienced, high energy, very skilled player coming from a tremendous basketball program. From the first time I saw him play, I loved his energy, his passion and his toughness. He’s a big, strong post player. He has very impressive skills and work ethic. He’s a quality student-athlete from a great family and I know he’s going to add a tremendous amount to our program.” Eastern Florida State head coach Jeremy Schulman: “First and foremost, Shaq is an unbelievable person, not just a great basketball player. Rutgers is getting just a person with great character and personality. Shaq is an unbelievably hard worker, he’s tough, and he’s incredibly coachable. He also has immense upside since he hasn’t been playing basketball that long. He has the strength, the physicality and the toughness to make an impact in the Big Ten from day one. I think he’s an outstanding, ready-made pickup for Rutgers.”

Ron HARPER, JR. • G • 6-6 • 220 • Franklin Lakes, N.J. • Don Bosco PrepScholastic: A Rivals three star prospect who averaged 10.1 points-per-game as a junior at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey (N.J.) under head coach Kevin Diverio in 2016-17 … helped the Ironmen win their first NJSIAA Non-Public A title in 47 years and reach Tournament of Champions final … had 17 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in TOC semifinal victory over Linden … was recognized as a Standout Performer at the Oladipo Skills Academy in July 2017 … competes on the AAU circuit for Ring City … signed with the Scarlet Knights over reported offers from Nebraska and Miami (OH). Head Coach Steve Pikiell: “We are excited to have Ron Harper Jr. join Rutgers Nation. He was a player we identified and loved from the first time we saw him play. His versatility and ability to shoot the ball, along with the fact that he’s an awesome kid from a tremendous family, was really exciting to our staff and me as the head coach. We love the fact that he is from a winning and well coached program at Don Bosco in our home state of New Jersey. Ron has a tremendous upside and we look forward to him having a great career ‘On the Banks.’ Rutgers Nation is very excited to add Ron Harper Jr. to R Family.” Don Bosco Prep Head Coach Kevin Diverio: “He’s been great for us in his progression as a player, on and off the court. I think his best days are ahead of him. I don’t think he’s near the kind of player that he will end up being. I think that potential was what Rutgers saw in him that some other people missed out on. He comes from a great family, with both his mom and his dad being Division I players. His game has evolved since last year. He’s been a leader on our team and someone that we look to score, rebound and defend. He’s really embraced his role and run with it. “His versatility is his biggest strength. He can play and score both inside and outside, he has great court vision. He passes the ball well. He’s not one dimensional, I think down the line he’ll be able to guard multiple positions. His teammates love him. He is a great teammate and I think that goes a long way in creating team unity. I can’t say enough about him as a person.”
