GOOD FAVOURA FILM BY Rebecca Daly

(the other side of sleep, mammal)

LOGLINEA remote Christian community experiencing a crisis of faith finds new hope in the arrival of a mysterious young man.

SYNOPSISSecluded deep in the forests of Central Europe, a strictly devout Christian community is suffering a crisis of faith following

a series of unsettling incidents and a devastating loss. When a young man stumbles onto their compound bearing scars

of trauma, the community welcomes him in and nurses him back to health. He is slowly initiated into their farming life

and scriptural regime, but the mystery of where he comes from only grows. After his actions avert a potential tragedy, the

community puts him to the test as it desperately seeks answers.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTWith Good Favour, I wanted to explore the effects of religion, both good and bad, on a community: its many contradictions and moral ambiguities, the dangers of misinterpretation or fundamental approaches, its mythology and symbolism - but also the reassuring quality of ritual, the beauty of belief and wonder.

My grandmother had a very strong faith that was able to contain her acknowledgement of various abuses within the church. Her life was marked by a sense of acceptance and an extraordinary ability to endure. She had a quiet but extremely powerful presence. Her capacity to hold all this contradiction within her fascinated me.

I wanted to look at the arbitrary nature of many of the beliefs inherent in organised religion, and more than that, to represent their assimilation into the governance of the everyday life of a person of faith. What extremities of experience can cause a rupture in this happy co-existence of the individual, the community, and God? Much of the tension in the film derives from this: the conflict between personal need, and even at times reason, and the behavioural parameters within which the community is required to live. The audience might wonder if these rules are the manifestation of a profound faith in God or if their key purpose is to maintain the integrity of the community.

Being an Irish woman, I’m acutely affected by a society that lives within the unimaginative, peremptory constraints of church doctrine. In Ireland, the church and state are still tightly woven to the point that the UN has called Ireland out on its violation of human rights, as abortion is illegal in Ireland. Meanwhile, parents baptise their children to ensure them access to education because of the lack of sufficient alternatives to Catholic schools.

At the same time, I wanted to open the story up to more than just an Irish or religious context. At the heart of it, the film is really about living within or living outside of a community. We have deliberately left the particulars of the religion vague so that it may be read as Christian but with no more specificity than that. Religion is a function of the community, sustaining it in the same way as, say, agriculture. For me, every film comes out of some aspect of my experience, but in its development, it is necessarily removed from its source, taking on a life of its own.

I am interested in how established belief systems, be they religious or secular, can bend perception. Typically, we experience the world as we expect to and subconsciously adapt our understanding of events to reinforce our preconceptions. In Good Favour, the community not only does this but its determination to maintain itself means that this tendency strays far into the realm of conscious action. Every occurrence can be suitably interpreted. Meaning and significance are created rather than encountered.
