Poor passwords are ticking time bombs 123456 ... Password cracked. Passwords can often be cracked within fractions of a second – the less secure, the easier it is to crack them. Most people are not aware about the importance of passwords. Only this can explain that the worst passwords are also the most commonly used ones. They are easy to remem-ber and even easier to crack. A password with less than 6 digits has already been considered as insuffi-cient for a long time, and even 8 digits are classified as not secure. Starting at 12 digits, with capitalized and small letters as well as special symbols is consid-ered a really secure password. An upward trend!

Danger in plain text formPasswords are frequently sent in plain text form via email and chat or are passed on handwritten notes. But what is going to happen to those notes and who else is able to read the emails? Most of the time these are passwords issued for a service, software or ap-plication account and give user authorized access to certain applications. However, unauthorized persons may also easily gain access to the system and extract sensitive company data – and all this happens without anyone concerned being aware of it. Furthermore, the disclosure of the data is not recorded, cannot be traced and therefore will not be available for future audits.

Identical passwordsIt is very common that the same password is used for different accounts and are not changed and replaced over a long period of time. This is easy to relate to, as it is most convenient, however, from a security point of view completely unjustifiable. So-called shared accounts pose an especially high risk. These accounts are used by a group of multiple administrators who use the identical password in order to have access and manage the account – e.g. in Windows or database systems such as MSSQL. Any kind of traceability gets lost in the process, al-though the situation in fact calls for it.

No unauthorized accessPassword Safe protects the passwords of privileged accounts, optionally also via a hardware security- module (HSM). This prevents employees from gain-ing unauthorized access. Besides service accounts, all end devices, software and logins are supported.

Without any outsourcing, MATESO GmbH combines the divisions Development and Service & Support in its premises in Neusäß, located at the gates of Augsburg. Beginning with Version 8, sales are managed by partner distributors. The direct sales division which has been controlled within the company up to now is thus pre-pared for future global expansion of the market. One cannot rely on the labor market alone anymore to find the right staff due to highly specialized requirements.
