About The CoverAbout The Cover

In 1982, the City of Laguna Beach Arts Com-mission established the annual banner com-petition. The banners, which measure 4’ by 16’, are painted by Orange County artists with original art work. Today, there are over 70 ban-ners in the collection. This year, the Arts Commission received 32 entries to the competition and selected designs by artists Carole Boller, John Carlyle, Yvette Lapayese and Ginger Valentino which will be displayed at Main Beach from Memorial

Day to Labor Day. The banner collection is part of an extensive public art program which boasts 95 permanent installations and over 300 temporary banners and palettes. A brochure of the collection is available at www.lagunabeachcity.net along with two public art documentaries, titled “Eye View – the Laguna Beach Public Art Collection,” which highlight public art pieces and the artists who created them.

July 4th is one of the most popular days in the City of Laguna Beach. Enjoy the day and all that this beau-tiful city has to offer!

•Whenever you plan on using alcohol, designate your sober driver, call a taxi/Uber, or use mass transit;

•Always wear your safety belt;

•Pedestrians need to look both ways before crossing the street, even in a designated crosswalk;

•“What goes up, must come down!” No shooting of firearms into the sky in celebration;

•Fireworks are illegal to possess and use in Laguna Beach;

•Share the road with cyclists, give them 3 feet;

•Homeland security is everyone’s re-sponsibility, so “If you SEE Something, SAY something!”

Have a safe and fun July 4th holiday!

Follow these tips for a safe July 4th celebration:

Why Recycle Used Oil?

About the Certified Centers

What About Contaminated Oil?Certified center managers will not accept used motor oil that has been contaminated with other fluids such as anti-freeze, solvents, gasoline, or water. So please, don’t mix your used oil with anything. However, if your used oil accidentally gets contaminated, your certified center manager can tell you where to take it for proper disposal. Alternatively, you can get information from the City of Laguna Beach Public Works Dept. about how to deal with your suspected contaminated oil. Call (949) 497-0344.

Did you know that used motor oil never wears out? It just gets dirty and can be recycled, cleaned and used again. Motor oil poured onto the ground or into a storm drain or tossed into trash cans (even in sealed containers) can contaminate and pollute the soil and our water. Recycling your used motor oil reduces this pollution threat, protects the environment and conserves a valuable resource. A winning combination!

The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) encourages the recycling of used motor oil by certifying used oil recycling collection centers throughout the state. Certified Used Oil Collection Centers will take used motor oil from the public and will pay you 16 cents a gallon. Most centers will take up to 5 gallons at a time. However, due to periodic under-capacity, some centers may accept only small amounts of used oil. Also, some, but not all centers accept used oil filters. Please call the center of your choice to verify prior to your visit.
