    Objective

The objective of this exercise is to introduce the understanding of the concept of risks and internal controls

through the use of real-life scenarios. In practice, a companys internal controls are evaluated by both internal

auditors, external auditors, as well as IT auditors.

Internal Auditors - There is a common misconception that Internal Auditors are focused primarily on

accounting. In truth, the profession is much broader than that. Internal Auditors report to the auditcommittee of the board of directors, and provide independent and objective assurance that the

companys internal controls are in accordance with company policies, procedures, external regulations

    and strategic objectives.

Internal auditors may review and make recommendations on every aspect of the organization, from

developing and examining processes and procedures, confirming the accuracy of information,

understanding risk and internal controls to reduce fraud, to improving the organizations effectiveness

and more. Internal Auditors come from a variety of backgrounds including IT, engineering, marketing and

finance to name a few. Such diversity gives internal auditors a broad perspective and in turn, makes

internal auditors a valuable resource to executive management and boards of directors in accomplishing

overall goals and objectives, as well as in strengthening internal controls and organizational governance.

External Auditors Provide an opinion to shareholders and/or stakeholders on the accuracy of the

companys financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting guidelines. External auditors

must also understand internal controls over financial reporting of an organization to appropriately

perform an audit; and if the company is public, in order to provide annual assurance on compliance with

    Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.

IT AuditorsIT auditors may be internal or external, and can work independently or in conjunction with

internal or external (non-IT) auditors on specific audit objectives. IT auditors provide assurance regarding

the design and effectiveness of internal controls within the organizations system and/or association with

the organizations governance controls over the IT environment.
