“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” - John Burroughs

Dear Reader,

I say reader, not readers, since I’m writing this to you, an individual, not to a group. I write this to you as if we were sitting across from each other at a little diner somewhere, fresh off a day paddle on a local river. We are, if I am imagining this correctly, eating pie and drinking something warm and soothing. I am eating banana cream pie, because that’s how I roll.

We had a good day on the river. True, we had to get our feet wet and pull our canoe over a few sandbars, but that was nothing. In exchange, we got to see an oriole building her nest, a thicket of fresh blooming wild roses, and a damselfly hatch that produced hundreds of living jewels, some landing on our gunwales and the brims of our hats.

Now we’re a little red from sun and wind, but happy that we engaged ourselves with the river. We didn’t paddle on it; we paddled with it. We connected with it. And, I might add, with each other. Friendships are strengthened on the water.

This year marks my 27th Canoecopia. I have officially lived more years with Canoecopia in my life than without it, and that’s a wonderful blessing. I love the work the Rutabaga team does to bring together so many people who love nature as much as we do.

Let Canoecopia 2016 be the start of the season where you engage with nature in such a way that your senses are indeed put in order, and that you find healing in your adventures.

Thanks for the pie. I bought last time, remember?

With gratitude,

“We didn’t paddle on it; we paddled with it. We connected with it. And, I might add, with each other. Friendships are strengthened on the water.”

Welcome to Canoecopia!A personal greeting from Rutabaga’s Chief Paddling Evangelist

THANK YOUCanoecopia could not be put on without incredible amounts of seen and unseen work by the Rutabaga Core Staff. Sasha Stone manages to corral all of our vendors and “volunteer” staff into one well-oiled machine. Marit Haug receives mountains of product in the months (and hours) before the show. Ethan Scheiwe makes order out of tons of boats, across five locations. Woody Osborne keeps the boat registers running, and keeps the staff cool and collected. Connie Lane keeps the ‘Baga booth

looking perfect. Mary Bonk makes sure everyone is paid on time. Nancy Saulsbury coordinates the speakers. Amelia Musser runs the Outdoor Programs booth. Jim Pippitt & Joel O’Neill keep the electronic things from falling apart. Tadhg Barrett ships out UPS truckloads of goods. Kate Westphal makes reams of paper into informative signs. Scott, Val (and newborn Sawyer!) Hamstra run the customer service booth. And that’s just the start. Our year-round sales staff rock it, and the seasonal staff are tremendous. My heartfelt thanks to all. — DB

Why shop Rutabaga? Canoecopia? So what’s the difference? Should you come to both? Hmm…

OPINION: NO EXCUSES. GET OUT THERE.It takes more than pressing a button or tapping your finger to get something out of paddling. I think you know what I am referring to. But, what you get from doing is much more rewarding than what you get from watching. There are times when being asked to go paddling is similar to being asked to go out to a movie or dinner. At first you think, “nah” as it seems much easier to just stay home, and besides, you have a list of things to do. Now I’m going to guess that if you think back you’ll remember that the times you said yes you probably ended the night with, “I’m really glad I went.”

So now you’ve agreed to go. Maybe it is a spur of the moment deal or it’s something that requires planning. Either way you get fired up just thinking about getting in the boat again. This is the passion. It’s hard to explain these feelings because it’s mostly just that. Feelings. Just looking at maps is enough to get that feeling going in me. Now you head out for the gig and

all is right with the world. Almost everything is forgotten, except the trip, and you are in the moment. At the put-in everyone pulls out their phones and shuts them off. Anyone voicing an opinion otherwise hears a chorus of, “We’re out here to get away from that.”

It’s incredible what a day of focusing on just one thing can do for a person. Being out in nature with friends and/or family paddling, fishing, or just talking without stopping to answer a text or an email can relax the mind and body in ways very few things can. I am going to wager that when the adventure is over and you’ve returned home, one if the first things said will be, “We gotta do this more often.” So do it!

If you are reading, this chances are you already have a passion for paddling. So take some time and do what you can to pay forward the passion that some person or something instilled in you. Someone will be better for it.

ONE of the most common questions we get at the Customer Service booth is, “Where is the Rutabaga Booth?”

Well, it’s almost all the Rutabaga Booth. Rutabaga puts on this amaz-ing thing called Canoecopia. So as you look around, you’re seeing Rutabaga, just in an unusual location. That being said, we do have a “Baga Booth” located in booth M1.

We see lots of people at Canoecopia who never come to the shop, and vice versa. We thought we’d talk about how we’re the same and different.

Canoecopia is a huge, awesome undertaking. We bring in vendors, factory representatives, and world-class speakers to inform and inspire. Exhibitors from all around the world can talk to you about wild (or mild) places to see and things to do. Most everything is on sale, and my goodness there is a lot of it.

On the other hand, there’s limited time. It’s only three days long. You have to pay to park (sorry! that’s not under our control). There’s an entrance fee (the Alliant Energy Center is not an inexpensive venue). As much as we’d like to, we haven’t figured out a feasible way to have you get on the water that weekend. It’s March, after all.

At Rutabaga, we have a huge selection of boats and gear, but it’s a more focused selection. We have our own expert staff ready to answer whatever questions you’ve got. We’re not on commission. Our desire

is getting you the right gear to get you out on the water.

Speaking of water! We have a fantastic test paddling pond right out back where you can see which

canoe, kayak, or SUP board works best for you.

We have a set of instructors that makes us beam with pride. Whatever you want to learn that’s paddling-related, we’ve got a class (or we can schedule a private lesson) for you. Two to three (or more) hours of easygoing, professional instruction can make all the difference.

We have a lot more time to spend with you at the shop. Things like showing how to put your rack on and off are a whole lot easier when things are a lot less hectic. There’s more time for stories, route shar-ing, and education. And since we own the lot, parking is free. There’s no entrance fee either. ;)

So the best option is to… come to both. Come and get inspired at Canoecopia, and buy at the best prices of the season. Get ready for the end of winter and the beginning of a great paddling season. Come back to Rutabaga when you need some help getting from here to there more efficiently or just want to add to your fleet.

Getting the most out of CanoecopiaTips & tricks for navigating the World’s Largest Paddlesport Expo compiled by the ‘Baga Staff

Double-check our website: www.canoecopia.comNo matter how much we try to get the Show Guide (this thing here in your hands) to be 100% perfect, there are always last-minute changes. Check the website, please.

Plan ahead and walk the entire show floorRead this publication thoroughly. It will give you a good idea of things to see, people to talk to, and presentations to attend.

Attend all three daysThere’s a reason we sell three-day passes. There’s so much to see and so many people to talk to. You’ll find it virtually impossible to do in one day, dashed difficult in two, but a pleasure in three.

Sunday is Fun-dayIf you’re only going to attend one day, consider coming Sunday. We have some fun giveaways and goodies. The crowds are a little lighter so you can see the show more easily and efficiently. Some of our best speakers and topics are reserved for Sunday. (See pg. 7)

Ask a lot of questionsMost every major manufacturer in the paddlesports industry will be there. They are eager to help! Ask them what makes their product best for your needs.

Shop early for the best selectionsWe’ll have plenty of options, but just like Black Friday, show specials can go quickly.

Take care of your body!Wear comfortable shoes and bring an extra pair of socks. Bring a water bottle and stay hydrated. Get a map from the info booth and highlight your plan. Shoulders tired? Take advantage of our tote bag check when you’re tired of carrying heavy items.

Ordering the things you didn’t findIf your heart is set on something special, no problem. Each vendor will have special order forms to fill in the details. Present the form when checking out at the Boat Registers for boats and trailers, and Main Registers for accessories (everything else). Note: special orders take 6-8 weeks to arrive.

Buying A Boat?Sit in a lot of boatsCanoecopia offers an opportunity to sit in hundreds of models under one roof. Make sure to adjust the seat properly and take your time.

Think about how you’re getting your boat homeIf you’re taking a boat home, we can install your roof rack purchases.

You can put down a General Boat Deposit if you’re not sureThe General Deposit is a great option for the “sure, but not sure” cus-tomer. We take a (fully-refundable) deposit of $500 at a Boat Register, and then you get Canoecopia pricing on a boat at Rutabaga until 5/31. Get your accessories at the show, though. Best prices, best selection.

Didn’t plan on taking a boat home but want one anyway? We’ll put your boat on Layaway and you can pick it up at the shop until May 31st. We just need a third of the purchase price or $500, which-ever is greater.

Trying out boatsRutabaga’s Layaway or General Boat Deposit gives you an opportu-nity to test paddle. Rutabaga’s test paddling begins around April 18th, depending on the weather. Check our website www.rutabaga.com

Used Boat trade-insTrade in your boat at Canoecopia. Please ask for details at the Boat Pick Up booth or call us at Rutabaga prior to Canoecopia.

PROBLEMS? QUESTIONS?If something goes awry, we want to know about it. Go to the Customer Service Desk, or ask a person wearing a staff shirt. We’re never too busy to listen, learn, and improve. Or email: [email protected].

Canoecopia procedures & policiesSo how does this work for you, the consumer?

Boats (canoes, kayaks, boards, trailers)

■ There are two large boat register areas inside the hall. Go there to make your purchase.

■ If we have your boat in stock, you can take it home that day. Proceed to the “Boat Pick Up” area at the back of the hall.

■ Special ordering a boat (or a boat not in stock)? A Rutabaga Staffer will explain the timeline for your boat arriving at Rutabaga and test paddling in late spring.

■ Need a roof rack or trailer? Go to the Malone, Thule and/or Yakima booths. Racks can be installed at the show if you are taking a boat home. Start this process early. It can take a while.

■ General Boat Deposit? You can pay $500 (fully refundable) per boat and get Canoecopia pricing until May 31. This lets you test paddle before you buy.

Accessories (everything else) ■ If you don’t need a rack to get your boat

home that day, we’re happy to put it on for you when you return to test paddle.

■ Purchase accessories outside the hall. Check-out is by the Customer Service area.

■ We have shopping totes available. If you want to go see a speaker, leave the bags at the Tote Check area.

■ Shopping totes are emptied each night. Buy your stuff before you leave that day.

■ Special Orders? People in the vendor booths will fill out a form for you (make sure your contact information is com-plete). Bring the completed form with all of the rest of your accessory purchases to the check-out near Customer Service.

■ Check-out lines move fast. Last year’s line at peak was about 4 minutes. Those of you who remember the old days can breathe a sigh of relief. Also, the line time peaks just a little during the speaker changes. If you want to walk through the line, check out while the sessions are on.

■ If you have anything that needs to be returned/exchanged, please keep it in “like-new, sellable condition,” with its tags, packaging, and receipt.

■ All returns must be made by May 31, 2016.

■ Questions? Look for any of the over 100 people wearing a staff shirt. They can give you an answer or direct you to the proper place to find it.

What got you paddling: A day trip on the Payette River with my family. I was adamant about getting kayaks when I got back to Wisconsin.

Favorite place to paddle: Around Madison I go to The Baraboo River as much as possible. I enjoy The St. Croix River for scenery and camping.

Longest trip taken: A six day rafting trip on the Middle Fork of The Salmon River. Great scenery, good people and a disco party on the sand.

Favorite boat: Nova Craft Prospector 16. My 50th birthday gift as well as the perfect boat to take on all my favorite rivers.

SUNDAY FUN-DAYYou gotta check out the cool things happening on SundaySunday, March 13th is Fun-Day at CanoecopiaSUNDAY means PRIZES. It is the day to win some great gear at the show. With amazing prizes offered by our vendors, we make winning nice n’ easy… like Sunday Morning.

■ Participating vendor booths will be designated with a balloon.

■ Visit the designated booths on Sunday from 11am - 1pm to sign up for each drawing. Sign up at each booth.

■ Prize winners will be notified via text and have their names posted between 2:00 and 2:30 pm. Winners must pick up their prizes that day at Canoecopia.

■ You must be present to win!

SUNDAY means SPEAKERS. Speaker rooms are less crowded and some of the best presentations only happen on Sunday. Woody Osborne’s talk on “Exploring the Lower Wisconsin River” is Sunday only, as is Jared Munch’s talk on his SUP adventure around Lake Superior.

SUNDAY means SPACE. Sunday is also a really great day to talk to our amazing group of vendors and exhibitors. If you have questions about where to go, how to do it, or what to get, the people with the know-how are available and ready to give you their advice.

SUNDAY means COMPLETED. By late Sunday, the Chesapeake Light Craft kayak will be surprisingly close to taking its maiden voyage (construction begins Friday afternoon). Remember that just because the epoxy looks dry doesn’t mean that it actually IS dry. (Don’t ask us how we know that.)

SUNDAY means SPECIAL DEALS. Be sure to keep an ear open for special deals from various booths or vendors announced only on Sunday. Sometimes our Flashing Blue Light Special means some serious savings.

To get in on all the action at Canoecopia, consider buying a three-day pass. It’s a better deal than two single-day tickets, and you can go to the show whenever you want.

WHAT’S NEW

EVERY YEAR our product buyers attend trade shows all over the country to see what’s the newest, best, and coolest. It’s an exciting time, and we have a hard time keeping our enthusiasm to ourselves. This is the first chance we get to showcase some of the stuff we saw last summer and fall. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here’s a good sampling. We think you’ll like what’s new, too.

Sea to Summit X-Pot (2.8L)The picture pretty much shows everything you need to know. This is the pot for an outdoorsy person. It takes up very little space, which can be important

in kayaks or canoes, but it doesn’t stop there. Jim (your editor) wants one for his pop-up camper. Bonus: the lid can double as a strainer. Double bonus: The lid can act as a trivet so you won’t scorch the bottom of your nylon tent. Triple bonus, with an included power-up: the sides are easy to clean. One note: don’t expose the sides of the X-Pot to direct flame. Camp stoves are great; it’s the campfire you want to avoid.

Current Designs PranaCD’s home-grown designs are typically long, speedy darts for clearly defined body sizes. The Prana is a complete change for them. Created by Danish designer Jesper Kromann-Andersen, it’s 17’ long and 21˝ wide and can seat a remarkably large range of figures. It’s the first CD boat to have 4 center line hatches for better dryness and handling when leaned way over. The hull is a modified hard chine that has enough initial stability for a beginner, and loads of secondary stability for the advanced paddler. It’s highly rockered, but still manages to put up respectable speed. Early reviewers praise its playful qualities in rough, rocky conditions while admiring its ability on calm waters as well.

Thule Atmos X5 CasesDon’t know how it happened, but those little cell-tower enabled pocket computers have become more ubiquitous than the original old Star Trek Communicators. As outdoor-friendly folk, we’re often around water and as we know, water and electronics don’t mix. That’s why Thule made their Atmos X5-series cases. They completely enclose the communicator in a protective shell,

good to IP68 waterproof and dust-proof standards and can be dropped from over 5 feet. Beam me up, Scotty.

Bending Branches JavaOur friends in Osceola, WI, decided to revamp their beloved Espresso paddle, and blessed it with the clever name of Java. They changed the layup with a really dazzling pinstripe design, adding extra laminations. We think you’re going to love the new look. Its got their Rockgard edge protection that continues almost up to the shaft, and then it’s wrapped in fiberglass for further durability and strength. Available in bent or straight shaft.

Yakima Towers For 20 years, Yakima’s Q-Towers helped thousands of our customers get their stuff from point A to point B. In 2016 Yakima is revising all of their towers. Get ready to meet the BaseLine, SkyLine, TimberLine, and RidgeLine towers. As you might guess from the names, they share a lot of design DNA.

The new towers are designed to be even more flexible than the Q-Towers. First, they can take any of the bar type you want: Roundbar, CoreBar, and JetStream. Second, the new aero-style towers let their bars have their pitch (up/down) and toe (swivel left/right) angle adjusted to ensure just the right fit to your car. They even take Yakima’s venerable SKS locks to keep thieves at bay.

The BaseLine tower (shown with the 3 bar styles) takes a new clip like the Q-Tower did, and includes a torque tool for a perfect fit. The SkyLine (shown at the bottom, without a bar) fits a fixed point roof, or can snap into a LandingPad. The TimberLine (not shown) clamps on to raised rails while the RidgeLine (not shown) grabs flush rail mounts. All of the new towers have a maximum load rating of 220 lbs., depending on vehicle and bar rating.

Yakima BarsYakima has a long, grand history with the good ol’ RoundBar, but they wondered if it could be improved. Enter the new CoreBar. It’s a galvanized, rolled steel, vinyl-wrapped aero bar. Super strong, it’s rated up to 220 lbs. per pair of bars. Yakima is calling their unique teardrop shape “JetFlow” and they’ve devoted countless computer cycles to minimizing noise and maximizing fuel economy.

The JetStream bar uses that JetFlow technology and applies it to extruded aluminum. The extrusion process allows for tweaks like the leading edge turbulator to make this the quietest bar in the Yakima line. It has slots above and below for super-simple installation, both on your car and with accessories. Really. You won’t believe how simple it is to put things on and off. Internally it’s braced with a JetTruss structure and is rated for 165 lbs per pair of bars. It’s available in silver or powder-coated black.

C13MAINHALL

Jackson KayaksKraken 13.5The Kraken. Not the fish-tailed creature in “Clash of the Titans,” nor the squid-like demon in Norse lore, the Jackson Kayaks’ Kraken 13.5 is a smaller, wider version of their popular 15.5 fishing kayak. We think it will paddle our smaller, twisty Midwestern waters better than its longer brother. It’s well equipped with two rod holders, YakAttack rails all over the place, and a 26-inch central hatch for use as a rod holder or fish bag holder. The Elite Seat 2.0 can be moved fore or aft to help you adjust the trim. The center scupper hole was designed to accept a Raymarine Dragonfly fish

finder. Behind the seat is a huge tank well with a flexible bungie

system that can be outfitted however you want. Yeah. That Kraken. Not

the other ones.

FISHING — WHAT’S NEW

PerceptionPescador 12 ProThe Pescador 12 Pro is a thoughtful redesign of Perception’s legendary sit-on-top kayaks. Think of it as an angler’s blank canvas that’s good for nabbing the bag limit on bass as is, or could be tweaked to your heart’s content. It comes standard with two YakAttack rails on the sides, and even a covered center-well perfect for rigging fish-finding electronic devices. It comes with molded-in cup holders and rod holders. Naturally, it’s super-stable and features a two-position stadium seat, and adjustable Keepers foot braces. It’s a great, simple kayak.

Native WatercraftUltimate FX Propel 13The Rutabaga staff loves the Ultimate boats. An all-day seat, crazy stability, and good acceleration. Now, take that and add a Propel drive? Instantly, you’re scooting around at an incredible clip, with your hands free. Propel drives are easy to stow, and are also reverse-

KokatatBahia PredatorTo the best of our knowledge, no one ever said, “I have too many pockets.” It just isn’t said, especially by anglers. Kokatat realized this and took their Bahia model and then tweaked it to fit the

needs of the kayak fisherman. The high-backed vest is covered with lots of flexible attachment points,

or MOLLE system. It upgrades the nylon outer shell with bomber tough

Cordura. One of the pockets has a handy drop-down shelf feature.

Like the standard Bahia, the Predator can be rigged up with all sorts of Kokatat’s own add-ons, from the Tactic Pack, to the Electronics Sling, or even their Tributary

Hydration System. Gear junkies, the gauntlet has been thrown.

Wilderness SystemsTarpon 130 XThe Tarpon 130 X is a an interesting reworking of the Tarpon fishing series. It’s longer, wider, and bursting with stability. The AirPro MAX Lite seat slides fore and aft for trimming the boat. (A well-trimmed boat paddles much easier than one that is plowing at the bow, or popping a huge wheelie. It’s more stable too.) It has 4 long Slidetrax rails for all your favorite fishing accessories. The Flexpod OS allows for additional electronic, propulsion, or storage opportunities. An additional transducer well is molded in just behind the Flexpod, in case the Flexpod is occupied. All of that plus a slightly narrowed and flared version of the original Tarpon’s easy paddling, multi-chined hull. Sounds like it’s time to grab your rod and go.

capable, unlike other human-powered drive systems. The mount can be adapted to accept an electric trolling motor. It has a sliding storage system behind the bomber-tough, comfy as all heck seat. Native put a battery box in the front to make installing electronics easier and safer. Groove Tracks are all over the deck, some right next to the seat, some within easy arm’s reach, others in the extreme ends of the boat (perfect for setting up cameras / GoPros for the perfect shot). All of that plus ridiculous levels of stability for stand-up fishing? You see why we love ‘em?

Jackson KayaksSkipperJackson Kayaks made the Skipper for the younger (or smaller) angler/paddler. It’s perfect for someone in the 50-125 lb range who wants to get out and fish (or just paddle). It is narrower than other small boats to improve its speed & handling. It has everything a properly equipped fishing kayak should have (rod mounts, wells aplenty, rails) while still feeling like a proper kayak. Smaller folk can now skipper their own

Skipper.

Icebreaker Sphere Short Sleeve CreweMerino wool is naturally a good tempera-ture regulator. It keeps you warm or cool as needed. Grab this Crewe for when you need the ultimate in non-stink summer wear. 65% Merino wool, 20% Tencel ®, and 15% Nylon, and you’ve got the most breathable and lightest fabric around. It’ll keep you cooler and dry faster, too.

Stohlquist KeeperThe Keeper is a fantastic fishing life vest that you’ll want to wear anytime you’re out on the water. It’s comfortable with high-back seats since the back foam is extra thin. The Wrapture design hugs your torso. It’s cut with extra large arm holes and sits low on the body for extra mobility. It’s loaded with pockets (4 in all) and has compartments aplenty for quick access for all of your tackle and other gear.

WHAT’S NEW

Sanborn Canoe Co.MinnewashtaThe Minnewashta is a pure, classic north-woods lake-house paddle. It’s just gorgeous. Made of Western red cedar and aspen with a fiberglass wrapped blade for extra strength, and a bare sanded grip for extra comfort in the hand. It’s solid, but not heavy at 24 to 25 ounces. The 160-square-inch blade face gives good power, while not being a beast to handle. They’re hand-made in Winona, MN.

Northstar CanoePolarisThe Polaris* is a 16’6” touring tandem for those who tend to pack light. It has all the virtues of the mid-size canoe: fast enough to get you there feeling fresh, nimble enough to avoid the hazards along the way, stable enough to shrug off most any conditions.

* Savvy astronomers and nerds will of course realize the hidden joke. Polaris is the North Star, which is made by Ted Bell’s latest company, Northstar. So in fact, this is the Northstar Northstar. But a canoe by any other name would paddle just as sweet, as the Bard once said.

YakimaHalfBack 2 or 3The Halfback in the NFL carries the ball behind the Fullback. The HalfBack from Yakima carries 2 or 3 bikes behind your car. Which is better? Well, the redesigned strap-rack folds down flatter and easier than before and fits the shapes of modern cars better as well. It’s sturdier than the gridiron back too. The Yakima one can carry 30 lbs. per bike, rather than just 15 oz. of pigskin. Winner? Yakima.

A constant are design makes our canoes more seaworthy in rough waters. And lightweight composites improve handling whether paddling or carrying.

Delta SeventeenThe sleek, lightweight Seventeen kayak (which not altogether curiously is 17 feet long) gets a refresh. They went to work on the deck, giving it beautiful (and strengthening) swirls and curves, a lower-profile deck hatch, and their proprietary Press-Lock hatch system.

The new model gets their Contour Seat System for improved comfort. They kept the soft-chined V-hull the same, for predictable handling for the beginner and advanced paddler. (A skeg can be ordered in lieu of the rudder, but we’re stocking the ruddered version.)

Astral LoyakThe Loyak isn’t as much of a “shoe” as it is a premium water-draining moccasin. Holes in the toe and the heel are designed to let water flow efficiently out of the shoe. The sides are made from rugged Cordura, while the tongue and top are made from 2.5 AirMesh for additional breathability. The G15 rubber sole grips surfaces even when wet for a comfortable, secure step.

MSR Windburner 1L potMaximum results from minimum energy. The Windburner system employs a radiant heat burner (adding one more form of heat that would otherwise be lost), an advanced heat exchanger (let no heat go to waste), and a wind management system that allows for better flame control (and reduced heat losses). It also attaches to the stove for a rock-solid connection. It’s a backcountry personal stove system for everyone.

WHAT’S NEW

Old Town Loon SeriesJim fondly remembers when the first Loon boats from Old Town came out. They were (and are) impressive boats — about as stable as a floating pier, and a great option for everyone from Granddad to the grand kids. The redesigned Loons look to the past and the future. They retain the stability and easy ingress of old. They get modern with OT’s ACS2 seating, and a very fancy removable work deck with a bottle holder, accessory trays, and a central dry storage compart-ment complete with USB port for charging personal electronic devices.

Sea to SummitTrek TK II Series Sleeping BagDown sleeping bags are warm and pack down to nothing. They also lose effectiveness when exposed to moisture, even just moisture that comes from living, breathing skin. Sea to Summit’s TK II bags attack the problem with a special coating applied to the down (reduces moisture by 30%, increases loft by 60%), as well as a differential cut shell construction which improves drying times by 60%. Long trips seem a lot more cozy now.

If you’re one who is captivated by color, you’ll be delighted to learn that all of the colors formerly avail-able to Current Designs’ kayaks are now available through the We-No-Nah line. Want a bright orange Prism? Boom! Make it so.

WHAT’S NEW — SUP

NEW COMPANIES RED PADDLE & LOON PADDLERed Paddle, out of Vancouver, BC, was born out of the idea that an inflatable board didn’t have to feel like you were paddling a banana.

Loon Paddle, out of Appleton, WI, decided to try to make SUP boards that were tuned to Midwestern streams and lakes. Sure, they don’t surf like a coastal board, but they sure glide a lot better.

Red Paddle Co. 12’6” ExplorerWe are so excited to have Red Paddle Co. come to Rutabaga in 2016. SUP boards are a really fun way to get out on the water, but not everyone has the means to store or transport them easily. Wouldn’t it be great if the board could magically shrink down to the size of your vacation luggage? Now, it can. The magic is air, combined with a two-stage air pump, which inflates the board to a higher pressure than normal, and that makes them stiffer and easier to use. The Explorer 12’6” adds extra efficiency by including a small runner in the bow and two in the stern to let it track better than other hybrid boards. The wheeled duffel bag is a better than most golf bags. Get out there. Wherever “there” is.

Bending BranchesBalanceIt’s not easy making outstanding anything. It’s hard enough when your raw materials

are mostly man-made, but it gets really tricky when you’re using natural products.

Due to changing wood supplies, Bending Branches was forced to change their wood mix to one of red alder, basswood, and roasted basswood. As long as they were changing that, they figured they might as well refine the blade. They squared off the edges, drop-ping the surface area to a more manageable 87 square inches (down from 100), continued with their proven Rockgard® tip, and finished up with an adjustable-length carbon fiber shaft.

The new model lost two ounces (now 26, down from 28) which should help you

stay out on the water for a bit longer.

Check out the Loon on page 18!

WHAT’S NEW — SUP

MTI Safety BeltInflatable PFDs are the bomb. Really. They let you get whatever sun or additional movement you want while keeping you safer — and away from the ticket-writing eye of the floating gendarme. They’re awesome for SUP’ers. The MTI Safety Belt is smaller than before, while using the same bladder from their Fluid 2.0 PFD. It uses 1.5 mm neoprene against your (presumably) bare skin for extra comfort. It even has a zippered pocket that can handle large phones in waterproof cases. See? They’re the bomb.

Kialoa Hulu Double BendKialoa’s owners Meg and Dave Chun have racing in their blood. That means they’re always looking to get that extra competitive edge. Double-bend paddles add additional power (the paddle blade stays vertical longer, and tends to have a better catch) while also reducing the stress placed on

the lower wrist for a more ergonomic paddle stroke. The Hulu Double Bend is optimized for racing but will work great for SUP’ers looking for long distance workouts, or just those who want to see more of the shoreline.

Werner Vibe & Zen series For 2016, the good folks at Werner have redesigned their basic blade. They’ve gone narrower and longer for an easier catch. The Zen (available in 85 and 95 square inch blades) is made in eye-catching and lightweight fiberglass. They’ve dialed in a little dihedral to help stabilize the blade in the water. The Vibe is available in one size only (100 square inches) and is made with fiberglass-reinforced, injection-molded nylon for serious durability.

Bending Branches got a chance to redesign the Expedition Plus when it became more difficult to source butternut. So they went to a red alder, basswood, and roasted basswood construction. They thinned out the shaft slightly and opted for a slightly wider,

slightly shorter blade face while keeping the total surface area about the same. They lined it with their Rockgard® epoxy and then wrapped it with fiberglass for heavy use in wilderness tripping. We think you’ll love it.

Malone AutoracksAxis For all the usefulness of trucks, you gotta admit that they’re not one of the better boat hauling devices. You can’t chuck any boat in the bed. The roof line is short and doesn’t give a lot of support. Systems that connect to the bed interfere with the tonneau cover. The Malone Axis solves these problems. It is a 2-in-1 load extender for your 2˝ receiver hitch. You can use it to extend the bed of your truck or to double as a hitch bar. It’s quite adjustable, being able to rise up between 56˝ and 63˝ and adjust width-wise between 32˝ and 48˝. Weighing only 33 lbs., it is rated to hold up to 500. (Though you’ll want to see what your hitch itself is rated for; it could be less.)

Therm-a-RestHoncho PonchoThe Honcho Poncho a convertible, multi-purpose waterproof and breathable warming device. It can work as a blanket (perhaps at the beach or in front of the fireplace) and then convert instantly to a poncho with a drawstring hood for a trip to a far-away loo. A kangaroo pouch and pockets could carry flashlight, headlamp, or smart phone. It packs down into a small, tight bundle that could be kept in your car for emergencies, or in your emergency bag that you grab when you’re paddling.

Northstar SeligaBefore his passing, Joe Seliga asked Ted Bell to keep his classic canoe in production (the mold was pulled off of one of Joe’s wood-canvas boats in Ely), and Ted was happy to do so. The Northstar Seliga looks like a vintage canoe until you realize it’s made with modern materials. The gentle recurve in the ends gives the 17-foot canoe a moderate 2.5 inches of rocker, perfect for trips in the BWCA or wherever your adventure leads.

Wilderness SystemsMotor DriveWilderness Systems’ new recreational and fishing boats are shipping with their FlexPod OS*, and it is brilliant because it is so versatile. It takes fish finders OR this self-contained (batteries & everything) Torqeedo drive. A separate throttle controls the direction & power. Maximum of 6 mph, and up to about 20 miles of range. (*Oboe Storage? Operating System? No. We asked. What it does stand for is known only to the marketing department. -Ed)

Cockpit covers are terrific things. They keep the interior of your boat clean and critter free. I know, you’re thinking, “I keep my boat clean and critter-free on my own, thank you very much.” Yes, until a family of mice takes up residence through the winter. Then you have one ugly mess. If the normal cockpit covers don’t fit your boat, then Seals has the universal solution right here. It also fits over Sit On Top kayaks and can protect SUP pads. We’ll be carrying the Cockpit Drape in two sizes: large and ginormous.

Stellar Kayaks S14SMarit took an instant liking to the S14S. “It’s really fast, and fun!” she said. You see, we don’t get a chance to paddle many sit-on-top kayaks that don’t secretly wish they were out catching bass. While that’s an admirable goal, it isn’t always our only goal. Stellar Kayak’s S14S is unabashedly a boat for the paddling enthusiast or someone who wants a comfortable, friendly, stable, work-out boat. It moves out more quickly than you’d expect from a 14-foot sit-on-top, and is a lot less twitchy than full-on dedicated surf-style craft. Marit wouldn’t recommend going on expeditions in it, but the two dry hatches do give you some storage options. Its smaller size and composite construction helps it weigh in at a paltry 34 pounds.

NEW COMPANIES: STELLAR KAYAKS & SANBORN CANOEBoth Sanborn & Stellar share a tradition of enthusiasts who ended up making the gear that appealed to them. Sanborn started with two friends and a garage. Stellar’s owners come from a rowing background and wanted fast, stable, and stiff craft of their own design.

Sanborn Canoe Co. Nessmuk UltralightGeorge Washington Sears wrote for years under the pen name “Nessmuk” and helped popularize light weight canoe camping. Sanborn Canoe’s Nessmuk Ultralight paddle are crazy-light touring paddles that ol’ G.W. Sears would have loved. The 52˝ bent shaft weighs 14 ounces, thanks to its wood front and carbon fiber back. Smaller paddles weigh even less. They’re pretty tough, too, with an epoxy guard lining the bottom of the paddle.

WHAT’S NEW

Astral DesignsLaylaMany years ago the Lotus Designs Lola changed what we thought PFDs were like. It came with a princess cut that fit almost everybody. The Lola was a hit with us and our customers. The Astral Layla is the Lola revised with extra features for the needs of women (and truth be told, men too). The Layla adds Kapok (a soft, organic renewable fiber) to the front panel for even more adjustability than before. It has an internally sculpted bust cup as well. Astral made it compatible with their Quick Release Belt (if you need to tow), and they snuck in a nostalgic logo sewn on the back.

NorthWater INSOLA MountFor the past two years we’ve featured the unusual Luci Lantern. The Luci is solar powered and can run LED lights for up to 12 hours on a single charge. They’re inflated so they float and can collapse

down to almost nothing. North-Water realized they’d make a good deck light if they could figure out how to mount it to a

kayak or even a SUP board. The INSOLA mount does just that.

It keeps the lantern in place and allows it to take up no space on your deck when collapsed.

NRS Forecast GloveWhen the forecast turns wet and cold, seasoned paddlers turn to their gloves. The NRS Forecast Glove uses 2mm neoprene for warmth plus convertible thumb & finger tips for when you need fine control. The palm side has lots of grippy silicone, while the back has an attractive geodetic pattern. With these gloves, who cares what the forecast says?

North Water Mata Hoe SUP Deck BagCanoes & kayaks have it easy when compared to SUP boards. You can put anything anywhere. Not so much with SUP boards. It’s difficult (and unwise) to cut holes in your board to improve gear storage. North Water made a gear storage system so you won’t have to. Their Mata Hoe SUP Deck Bag can take a 10L dry bag, a water bottle, smartphone case & more. It even includes built-in flotation. It is perfect grab-and-go storage for your next SUP outing.

Malone AutoracksUplift SUP HandleSUP boats have hand-shaped recesses but they’re not always the most comfortable things, and sometimes the wind is blowing enough to make you wish for a proper handle as you carry it to the water. If one could take two huge suction cups and make a proper handle-like bridge between them and… you’d have something like the Uplift SUP Handle. Luckily, you don’t have to do all the engineering or tooling up. Malone has done it already.

WHAT’S NEW

DaggerStratos S & LMuch like a good Swiss Army knife, the Dagger Stratos 14.5 boats are designed to do it all. They’re long enough to get some good speed & glide, while rockered enough to be playful in rocks & surf. The drop-down skeg firms up tracking when you want to make some time in a straight line. It’s got enough width for beginners to feel at ease, and enough secondary stability to let you grow into carving turns with the best of them. The S version is rated to about 275 pounds, while the larger (taller and wider, mostly) L version is good to 300, or so.

Hurricane Santee 120STake the super-stable, lightweight concept of the Santee 126, and make it a little smaller and lighter. Give it a huge cockpit opening to aid in ingress & egress (or provide room for Fido or Junior) and you’ve got a compelling recreational kayak for the lake or river. An optional sport console with an 8˝ hatch puts gear trays at arm’s reach. It even has a 4˝ track for mounting a GoPro or a rod holder.

Heli 2200 Adventure Solar KitIt’s 2016. Adventurers often pack electronic things in their kit (for good and ill). Almost all of ‘em need charging. Charge the lantern’s 2200 mAh battery (via AC, DC, or the 7W solar panel) and from there deliver power via the 10-in-1 adapter, or your device’s USB cable. The lantern itself shines for up to 40 hours and can charge up to 2 smartphones. Under optimum conditions, the solar panel can charge the lantern in about 5 hours. That’s a lot of freedom for the modern adventurer.

NRS High TideNo need for a separate rain jacket and splash jacket with the NRS High Tide. The half-zip front does a great job of providing adjustable ventilation while also making it easy to get on or off. The HyproTex material provides breath-ability while also being waterproof. The sleeves are splashproof and one has a zipper to make ac-cessing personal items easier even when you’re wearing your trusty PFD. It’s capped (quite literally) with a three-point adjust-able hood.

Stohlquist SpectrumWe’re really excited to have the Stohlquist Spectrum in the shop. It is a universal fit (good for chests from 30˝-52˝) with a really

clever cross-chest cinch mechanism. Jim wants a few for his

personal fleet since one vest will comfortably

fit almost everyone. (No need to try

to guess who needs a small or a medium size PFD.) The back

is made out of a super-thin foam that works well with the tall seat backs popular in recreational kayaks.

DRESSING for paddling is about more than looking good – although, let’s face it, a brightly-colored paddling jacket or a rash guard that matches your PFD and boat does look pretty cool in pictures.

But seriously, the two most impor-tant things are safety and comfort, followed closely by functionality.

Sure, people have been paddling in shorts and t-shirts for years, and there’s nothing wrong with that – as long as you match the clothes with the conditions in which you’re paddling. On a warm sunny day, on a warm body of water, what you wear is pretty much a matter of choice.

But what if it starts to rain? Or what if you capsize? Expect the unexpected. Invest in a dry bag and bring spare clothes. Have a jacket you can put on, but make sure you can still paddle in it. That where functionality comes in.

Save your cotton hoodie for off the water. Wet cotton not only loses its ability to keep you warm, the water it absorbs in a capsize will make it difficult to swim or get back in your boat as it weighs you down.

The rule of thumb is to dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. That is particularly true here in the Midwest where those first warm days in spring might lure you toward newly-thawed lakes.

A dry suit is the gold standard for cold-water paddling. It seals out the water with gaskets on the neck and wrist and gaskets or attached socks at the ankles. Some people like separate tops and bottoms instead of a one piece. Either way, you still need to provide insulation underneath, generally wool or fleece.

A wet suit will also serve you well in most conditions. Get one designed for paddling, rather than scuba diving or surfing. A paddling-specific wet suit will give you the needed freedom of movement for paddling. In milder conditions, a lighter weight, wet suit-style clothing, such as Hydroskin, is a good option. One of my most versatile has a neoprene core with regular rash guard sleeves. It can keep me comfortable in a fairly broad range of temperatures.

For mild temperatures, rashguards are nice because they don’t absorb water like cotton does, and they dry quickly when they do get wet. There are lightweight, long-sleeve versions that also protect you from the sun.

Speaking of the sun, block some of the sun’s rays with a good hat. It can also protect you from a seagull making a “deposit.” Don’t ask me how I know.

Lenore Sobota is an avid kayaker and ACA-certified instructor who also bikes, hikes and cross-country skis. She knows how to dress for the occasion, as long as the occasion is playing outside — not going to a wedding or formal dinner.

FEATURESDressing for successIt isn’t for the boardroom says Lenore Sobota

Kids and electronics Maybe the modern world isn’t as good as we thought, by Jim Pippitt MY friend noticed it first. Her son was being dominated by electronics. It was the first thing he wanted to do in the morning, and the last thing he wanted at night. He would pull away from con-versation with the family to steal more time on the iPad. His ability to read the family’s non-verbal cues seemed stunted. When he lied about not using a smartphone in bed, she brought the Motherly Boom down. Then something interesting happened. He began hanging around the dinner table. He showed off Lego creatures he made. He understood the frowns and the smiles that he’d missed before.

This isn’t just anecdata. Turns out that the smartphone, always-connected revolution has a darker side to it as well. A study by

UCLA on 6th graders found that those who were constantly connected to electronics had markedly less ability to identify the feelings in photos of faces. After 5 days of being at an electronics-free camp, their scores improved significantly.

Sherry Turkle’s amazing book, “Reclaiming Conversation” (Penguin Press) quotes a kid who went on a hike into the wilderness for 3 days with his friends. At home, the kid said they talked about what was on their phones. “What I noticed was that we were only focus-ing on ourselves and what was right in front of us and in the moment.” When they were out on the hike “conversation itself seemed a revelation—a large new space. He says, ‘It was a stream, very ongoing. It wouldn’t break apart.’” The stream of conversation that most of us take for granted was new and exciting for him.

Going away into nature helps you connect with yourself and with others. Countless essays have been written on that. What’s new is learning how important it is to set the electronic things down. Going away into nature is a perfect excuse, and the perfect place. You are, by definition, moving to a different place, a wild place, and that helps change the inherent dynamics of communication.

I think there’s a limited place for electronics when in nature: bring a digital camera, especially if it has the ability to record movies. After we get home, I nab the storage cards, and download whatever they took. It’s my job to make the captured footage into a movie. (I used to think, “Making movies is really hard.” It isn’t. I found it takes about 45 minutes to “get” a program and then the rest is just telling a story.) Some of the movies are just slide shows with ragtime pianos in the background. Some are more involved, with an audio track overlaid on action footage. It’s not

Hollywood quality. It’s family movie. That’s more than good enough.

The kids (and their parents/grandparents) love it. I think we’ve played the 2015 Brule movie about 40 times. The kids are the stars of the show, and our good memories of their time outdoors are reinforced with each showing. That’s them, out there in the wild, smiling ear to ear, with the family laughing with them. If I conveniently leave out how hot it was, or the mosquito swarms we dealt with, they don’t seem to mind (then again, their adopted uncle is one for adjusting facts to fit a better narrative structure). Give some kids and yourself a break from the smartphone. I swear y’all will be the better for it.
