26 Visit Shakopee 2016 Visitor’s Guide RiverSouth is home to thrills for the young and the young at heart. Each year more than 10 million people cheer, scream, taste and explore their way through RiverSouth’s premier entertainment desti-nations: Canterbury Park, Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, Valleyfair, and the Renaissance Festival. With unique attractions, world class festivals, and breathtaking scenery, there is fun around every bend.

Anyone can do fun. At RiverSouth, we do BIG fun!

VALLEYFAIRIn 2016, Valleyfair marks its 40th anniversary in RiverSouth with a season-long celebration that

includes the return of an original park ride, a new entertainment venue and a look back at four decades of fun.

With more than 75 rides, shows and attractions, Valleyfair is the Upper Midwest’s largest amusement park. Discover something for everyone from soaring roller coasters, family

rides, Planet Snoopy and Dinosaurs Alive to world-class live entertainment all in one place.

Head to the beach at Soak City Waterpark. Kick back in a semi-private cabana, go with the flow on Ripple Rapids or take the Breakers Plunge on the tallest side-by-side waterslides in the country. Best of all, Soak City Waterpark is included with admission to Valleyfair.

Guests will have a chance to earn their wings as Valleyfair reintroduces the Flying Eagles. Part of the park’s original ride package in 1976, the Flying

Eagles will once again become a family favorite for parents and children alike. All Wheels Extreme brings its high-flying extreme sports show to Valleyfair’s new performance venue. A finalist on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent,” the show features some of the top professional inline skaters, skateboarders and BMX bicycle performers in the world. Dancers, trampo-line artists and aerialists add a theatrical element to create a one-of-a-kind

production that will excite audiences of all ages.

Valleyfair is open mid-May through mid-September. Then, the Park transforms in to ValleySCARE through October.

CANTERBURY PARKExperience the heart-pounding excitement of live horse racing, blackjack, poker and many special events at Canterbury Park - one of Minnesota’s premier year-round enter-tainment destinations, right in the center of RiverSouth.

Canterbury Park features live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing mid-May through September in a family-friendly atmosphere. Check out great daily specials like Thursday’s Buck Night and Sunday’s Family Day, along with popular annual promotions including wiener dog and bull dog races, camel and ostrich races, and the best 3rd of July fireworks show around. For horse racing action all year long, you can watch and wager on America’s favorite tracks daily in the Canterbury Park Racebook.

In the Canterbury Card Casino, you’ll find 24/7 action with popular games like Blackjack, Pai Gow Poker and Texas Hold’em. Enjoy the state’s widest selection of table games in smoke-free comfort. Plus, the Card Casino offers tableside menu service and bar service daily.

From summer concerts to winter snocross racing, indoor craft shows to outdoor festivals, Canterbury Park hosts a variety of events all year long.

Hint: During the live horse racing season at Canterbury Park, a trolley runs multiple times daily between the race track and Mystic Lake Casino Hotel.

RENAISSANCE FESTIVALHuzzah! For more than four decades, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival has showcased the merriment of the 16th century in RiverSouth and has become the largest Renaissance Festival in the country.

As guests enter the Festival gates, they are welcomed by roam-ing street characters with a gracious “Good day my lord and lady.” They are slowly immersed into the sights, smells and sounds of an authentic 16th century village. With more than 300 street characters roam-ing the village, it is inevitable to come face-to-face with the town beggar, the common peasant, the royal court and even the King and Queen.

The Renaissance Festival features 16 stages of live entertainment, 250 artisan vendors, themed weekends, kid-friendly activities, full combat jousting and food fit for a king, including the ever popular turkey drumstick.

New to the Renaissance Festival is Sherwood Forest, a fully immersive family experience. At first glance, it looks like any ordinary forest, until you find the hidden entrance and enter the portal to the lush beauty and secrets concealed inside. Who knows, Robin Hood and the Merry Men may very well be there to greet you and your family.

The Renaissance Festival is open weekends and Labor Day mid-August through early October.
