Headmaster’s WelcomeIt is with great pleasure that I welcome over 50 schools, from all over the British Isles, to the SATIPS National Prep
Schools’ Art Exhibition 2016, which we are proud to host for the first time. Staff and volunteers at this year’s Exhibition have been awed by the standard, creativity and breadth of artwork that has been submitted.
Thanks must go to the myriad of Art teachers and volunteers at prep schools across the UK for taking the time and effort to select and package their very best pieces of artwork. The variety and talent displayed by these youngsters is an inspiration. It is evident that Art, as a core subject, plays a key role in developing technical skills, creativity and
imagination, as well as confidence and self-esteem, in the lives of all pupils.
This Exhibition is a credit also to the Cheltenham Prep staff and pupils who have dedicated time and heart in putting it all together, but a special mention must go to Mrs Alayne Parsley. Alayne has been a driving force in
delivering this Exhibition, as well as developing and encouraging exceptional artistic talent at Cheltenham Prep. I am certain that many will take great enjoyment from this experience.
Mr Jonathan Whybrow, Headmaster
Guest of Honour, Sophie Ryder Cheltenham Prep are truly delighted to welcome Sophie Ryder
to SATIPS 2016. Sophie’s statue, The Hare and the Minotaur, takes centre stage on The Promenade in Cheltenham, and so
many of us already know and love her work.
Sophie was born in London in 1963. She studied Combined Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts where, while obtaining
her diploma in painting, she developed the ‘Lady Hare’ as a counterpart to Ancient Greek mythology’s Minotaur.
Mystical creatures, animals and hybrid beings made from a wide variety of mediums including sawdust, wet plaster, old machine parts and wire ‘pancakes’, form the heart of Sophie’s art. Working ‘big’ is also a significant feature of her scupltures
and Sophie particularly enjoys rising to the constructional and creative challenges that are an inherent part of this process.
Sophie’s current exhibition Relationships is on show in and around Salisbury Cathedral. She is an incredibly busy Artist; Cheltenham Prep is especially delighted that she is able to open The SATIPS National Prep Schools Art Exhibition 2016.
