New information on the diagnosis and management of patients with chronic kidney disease is being gathered at an accelerating rate. It is difficult for the busy practitioner to separate the novel but unproven idea from information that has a direct impact on daily practice.

In this informal and interactive session, important information presented at the recent meeting of the American Society of Nephrology will be reviewed. Eight areas of clinical nephrology will be covered and potential changes in patient management will be discussed. We are honored to have guest speaker, Edgar V. Lerma, MD, FACP, FASN, Clinical Professor of Medicine, Nephrology, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and Advocate Christ Medical Center, join the discussion.

Program objectives

After attending this educational activity, participants should be able to:

Describe the role of FGF23 in the progression of cardiovascular disease and its links to CKD progression

Review the emerging role of home dialysis and frequent dialysis therapies in improving outcomes in ESRD

Discuss the approach to the timing of dialysis access and the new techniques available to patients and providers

Identify patients with glomerulonephritis who will benefit from more aggressive immunosuppressive therapy and how to approach maintenance therapy

Formulate a strategy for the treatment of HCV in patients with ESRD

Define the latest recommendations for blood pressure control in different age groups and patients with CKD

Explain the indications for immunosuppression conversion in kidney transplant recipients
