Renewable Energy: Policy and DevelopmentClimate change, environmental degradation, and the

increasing scarcity of resources are major challenges that

humans face today. In light of the Fukushima catastrophe

in 2011 and the post-2015 development agenda, energy

security and alternative energy production are major topics

of discussion worldwide. Germany plays a leading role in

this field and strongly endorses the transition from nuclear

and fossil energy to renewable resources such as biomass, solar, or wind power. However, due to the multitude of groups

and special interests involved, this transition also faces

significant political, economic and technological challenges.

The Summer School at the University of Bonn intro-

duces students to the numerous aspects and debates on

renewable energy sources as a response to today’s climate

    and energy problems.

The Summer SchoolThe University of Bonn invites highly motivated international

    undergraduates from various academic backgrounds

to this interdisciplinary program to debate policies and

developments in the field of renewable energy. The summer

school gives students an insight into current discussions,

research and policy efforts on global and local levels, with a

special focus on conflicts associated with the topic. Through

intensive seminars, individual projects and guest lectures

by experts from academia, politics, and international

organizations students will critically assess the potential and

challenges of renewable energy. The interactive exchange

with experts from diverse fields also provides students with

a glimpse into possible career paths.

    Summer School on Renewable Energy

Bonn – Center of Global Policy-MakingThe University of Bonn is located in the heart of Germany’s

UN city, where 19 UN-agencies and international think tanks

practice global policy-making on a daily basis. Combined

with the University’s leading interdisciplinary research on

sustainability, program participants have the unique opportunity

    to assess policy-making in action.

Program ElementsThe course  “Energy Policy: Global Decisions, Local Actors”

explores policies in the area of sustainable development, with

a special focus on the “energy” factor. Through a broad

perspective students will be introduced to global policies

and actors. To illustrate the EU’s approach, the students

will visit the European Commission in Brussels. During the

last week in Bonn, the focus shifts to German efforts in the

field of renewables and to concrete examples of local action.

Students put what they have learned to use in a simulation,a presentation, and in their final papers.

Guest lectures  and excursions  to NGOs, research institu-

tions, such as the Jülich National Research Center, and re-

newable energy sites will deepen the students’ policy know-

ledge and cover the political, economic and technological

    aspects of the topic.

Students will work in small independent groups  on energy-

related projects, guided by scientists and professionals

    from the respective fields.

The program is entirely conducted in English. An intro-

ductory workshop on German culture and activities with

student ‘Buddies’ from Bonn make the summer school a

    unique intercultural experience.

During the final excursion to Berlin, the group will meet and

discuss with practitioners and politicians from government

agencies and NGOs. Furthermore, students will gain deeper

insight into recent German history and culture.

Tuition and CostsThe program fee includes registration, accommodation, tuition,

free use of public transportation in Bonn and the state of North-

Rhine-Westphalia, excursions, and regional field trips. Travel

expenses to and from Bonn, meals and other personal expenses

need to be covered by the participant or his/her home institution.

For further information on the current program fee, please
