THANK YOUNow in its seventh year, the Festival will feature its usual busy schedule of talks and workshops, as well as a community and education programme aimed specifically at children and young people. As the Festival’s reputation as a friendly, intimate affair spreads throughout the literary world, its ability to attract well-known and interesting authors is growing. In addition this year, there is a celebration of local talent as no fewer than four of our speakers have connections with Bishop’s Stortford and the local area.

It would not have been possible to produce a Festival of this scale without the help of our sponsors, and all those who support the Festival of Literature in so many ways.

We are very grateful to Marilyn Brocklehurst, founder of the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, who has been central to the running of the Bishop’s Stortford College Festival of Literature since its inception. Likewise, the Prep School Friends, who are involved every year.

The Herts & Essex Observer has given fantastic support and encouragement as well, helping us to spread the word about the Festival.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have kindly supported this year’s Festival.

A WORD FROM ROSIEEvery year, the aim is to deliver a varied and exciting programme; this year is no exception! We hope you enjoy our speakers.

WELCOME I have great pleasure in introducing another exciting programme for Bishop’s Stortford College’s seventh Festival of Literature.

This year, audiences are treated to one of Feminism’s most honoured advocates, Germaine Greer, who will consider the fate of the disappearing woman and suggest potential solutions. There is also humorous entertainment in the form of ex-Grumpy Old Man, Arthur Smith as he talks about his life in comedy as revealed in his acclaimed memoir.

For those who love an adventure, Alastair Humphreys will be sharing his non-stop life experiences, from his epic adventures including a four year cycle journey around the world, to his award winning concept of microadventures - short adventurous journeys close to home.

Members of the local community are also celebrated this year as Sara Hirsch, performance poet, will delight audiences with her Slam winning pieces. Former College Headmaster, John Trotman, will be sharing his own poetry, and this will be enriched by a performance from the College’s Orchestra in an evening which will celebrate this fusion of the Arts. Locally based 2013 Master Chef semi-finalist, Saira Hamilton, will provide a sampling of her Bengali-inspired cuisine. Former Bishop’s Stortford resident, Julie Summers, will be talking about, and modelling WW11 style - Fashion on the Ration.

Witness the word play of father and son linguists and Shakespeare experts when David and Ben Crystal take to the stage, and world-famous storyteller Ben Haggarty will explore fairy tales for grown-ups. A passion for words is evident in Bishop’s Stortford College’s Senior School pupils’ reading competition, Literature Live. Internationally famous poet, Daljit Nagra, will show the finalists how to do it with a performance of his own before he judges this highly respected College House Competition.

In addition to the various Open Events, the College welcomes other schools to share in the fun with authors including Frank Cottrell Boyce and The Two Steves, as well as last year’s winner of the Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book Award, Kes Gray. Also open to schools is the very popular Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book Award, which this year will be presented by award winning author and illustrator, Lauren Child.

There is something for everyone to enjoy, so we warmly welcome you to Bishop’s Stortford College to celebrate the wonderful world of words, stories and pictures.

SARA HIRSCH open eventJoin Sara in her quest for answers as she uses rhyme, reason and a little of the ridiculous, to ask some of life’s biggest questions.

She recently came third in the World Slam Championships in Paris, and was a semi-finalist in the European Slam Championships 2014. This summer, Sara premiered her debut solo ‘How Was It For You?’ at the Edinburgh Fringe and was amongst the line up at some of the UK’s biggest festivals, including Glastonbury’s Poetry & Words stage.

GERMAINE GREER open event Hear the controversial agenda-setting author, acclaimed academic, outspoken broadcaster, and feminist icon talk about the disappearing woman.

For Germaine, forty years ago it seemed women were about to take their rightful place in the world: in parliament, in the church, in the judiciary, in the workplace; but when you open the newspaper you find that news is still made by men in suits.

As soon as girls accept the size, role and shape of adult women, they begin to disappear.

With each stage of their lives, as they become successively wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, they become less visible.

Germaine attempts to explain this state of affairs and to suggest some strategies for change. Enjoy the chance to ask those burning questions… serious or light-hearted. Expect this unique close encounter with Germaine to be candid, enlightening, and highly entertaining.

BEN HAGGARTY open event Join storyteller Ben Haggerty for ‘Fairy Tales for Grown Ups’. World renowned for his dynamic and challenging performances, allow Ben to lure you into the richly metaphorical world of a full-blooded fairy tale for grown-ups.

Dark, beautiful and startling by turn, this is a story of dreams, initiations and the repayment of debts - a journey from innocence to experience which delves into a disconcertingly familiar narrative world. Performing with infectious charm and ease, this piece is fierce, fast paced, and unashamedly magical.

The performance is suitable for adults and children aged 11 +, and is perfect for those new to performance storytelling.

“.. and what a story this one was - it unravelled itself mischievously in Haggarty’s quietly skilful telling” THE NEW STATESMAN

POETRY AND MUSIC open event WITH JOHN TROTMAN AND BISHOP’S STORTFORD COLLEGE ORCHESTRA

Join John Trotman and College musicians for a poetry and music evening in a wonderful union of the Arts.

John left Hertfordshire in 2011 to live in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. He was a teacher of English and a Deputy Head prior to his role as Headmaster at the College. He is a member of Hightide Poets at Quay Arts in Newport.

Both Brittle and Beautiful was published in July 2015 and contains some of John’s photographs and illustrations which link to the poetic texts, reflecting his interest in the visual arts, history and the natural world.

A number of the poems mention specific pieces and composers and the music will therefore be chosen to fit in with the poetry. The College Orchestra will play and there will be a mixture of solo performances by singers and instrumentalists with music ranging from Purcell to Gershwin.

SOPHIE HANNAH open event Sophie, the queen of psychological thrillers, specialises in novels wherein the greatest dangers are the ones closest to home. Listen to her in conversation with New Statesman Editor, Jason Cowley, talking about her first standalone thriller, A Game For All the Family.

Justine thought she knew who she was, until an anonymous caller seemed to know better...

Sophie was the first person since Agatha Christie’s death to write a Hercule Poirot mystery, The Monogram Murders, with the blessing of the Christie family. She is an internationally bestselling crime writer, published in more than 32 countries. The Carrier won the 2013 Crime Thriller of the Year Award at the UK National Book Awards. She also writes short stories and is an accomplished poet; Pessimism for Beginners was shortlisted for the 2007 TS Eliot Award.

JULIE SUMMERS open eventExperience Fashion on a Ration! With the help of some models, Julie will be weaving together stories from ordinary lives and high society to provide a unique picture of life during the Second World War.

As the nation went into uniform and women took on traditional male roles, clothing and beauty began to reflect changing social attitudes. For the first time, fashion was not just influenced by Hollywood, but the demands of industrial production and the pressing need to ‘make-do-and-mend’.

Julie, a former Bishop’s Stortford resident, is an author, broadcaster and historian.

She has recently been involved in, what she calls, the most exciting development in her writing career; the dramatisation of her book Jambusters by ITV. This became the inspiration for the successful 2015 drama series ‘Home Fires’, and a second series has just been confirmed.

DALJIT NAGRA open event & BISHOP’S STORTFORD COLLEGE LITERATURE LIVE

Daljit Nagra is a multi-award-winning poet. In 2004, he won the Forward Prize for Best Individual Poem with Look We Have Coming to Dover! a poem which he describes as being “obsessed with Asian-ness”. Since then, he has won or been nominated for too many prestigious poetry prizes to mention - his current book, Ramayana is nominated for the TS Eliot Poetry Prize. A regular contributor to BBC radio, Daljit is also the Lead Poetry Tutor at The Faber Academy and has run workshops all over the world.

Daljit is a seasoned performer, able to slip into varied voices as his poems demand, and knowing just how much information to give in occasional introductions so that the poems are illuminated, but not over-explained.

“The poet’s reading, like his words, is energetic and as alive as quicksilver” THE OBSERVER

Daljit will set the standard for Literature Live with a performance of his own.

Then the House Reading Competition, LITERATURE LIVE, commences.

This is your chance to experience the unique passion pupils at Bishop’s Stortford College have for their Houses as they compete by bringing literature to life for the audience. Pupils are able to select any piece of literature they wish, so audiences can expect the unexpected. Last year’s judge, Stewart Henderson, defined our pupils as a “bright and engaged swarm”!

Don’t miss the opportunity to become immersed in the College atmosphere! Daljit will judge the performances and announce the winners.
