This Professional Development Training pack outlines the areas of training for volunteers and volunteer program managers able to be provided by Northern Volunteering SA.The pack is designed to be user friendly while containing enough detail to help you make decisions regarding training for your volunteers.We also specialise in providing support to volunteer management infrastructure with the focus of improving the experience of the volunteer. Our consultancy services provide a focus on listening to what the client wants.We enjoy what we do. We trust you will also.

About Northern Volunteering SA

Established in 1982, Northern Volunteering SA (NVSA) is a regional Volunteer Resource Centre covering the northern region of Adelaide. We provide a number of services to the volunteer sector both within and outside this area, including:

Volunteer referrals (only to member organisations within the target area)

Volunteer training (member organisation discounts available)

Volunteer program manager training (member organisation discounts available)

Consultancy services Customised training services

Our referral service covers an area extending from Port Adelaide to Enfield, Tea Tree Gully, to Gawler.

Accredited Training

In January 2014 Northern Volunteering (SA) developed a Registered Training Organisation called NV Education and Training Services (NVETS).

NVETS (Provider no. 40831) offers high quality accredited training in the following areas:

Certificate I Active VolunteeringCertificate II in Community Services with a specialisation in volunteeringCertificate III Active Volunteering

All these Certificates will be combined with a volunteer placement. The Certificates are based on a series of 6 modules which cluster units of competency.They will help the participant understand their individual styles; their role as a volunteer; communication; their role in teams and how diversity impacts them; their relationship to the organisation and their individual volunteer role.

Certificate IV in Volunteer Program Coordination Using our Summer School as a basis, the Certificate IV will feature a series of skill sets which can be taken as a whole program or as individual modules.A significant introduction to volunteer program management in a highly interactive manner.

Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management, with a specialisation in volunteer program management. Developed in the form of a Professional Development Program, the course includes 12 workshops (usually in 6 two day segments); a major workplace project; smaller assessments and workplace assessments. The Program was the winner of the 2013 SA Adult Learners Program of the Year.

About the NVSA Personnel

Peter Heyworth

Peter is the Executive Officer at NVSA. He is well known within the volunteer sector and is seen as an innovator, capacity builder and mentor. He is passionate about volunteerism and its impact on society.He was the inaugural President of the Australasian Association of Volunteer Administrators (AAVA), Australia’s first professional Association for volunteer program managers. Peter has extensive experience in the setting up and development of volunteer programs. He has been involved with the development, review and monitoring of volunteer program management qualifications at both State and National levels. He was State Volunteer Manager for a leading disability agency for 10 years, a program involving some 950+ volunteers. Peter holds qualifications in Geology; theology; volunteer management; community sector management; training & assessment (Cert IV TAE); public policy, including a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (Carnegie Mellon University in Adelaide); and Vocational Graduate Certificate in Management (Learning).

Donatella Amos

Donatella is the Training and Development Manager at NVSA. She has over 16 years experience managing volunteer programs. Her previous position was Director of Volunteer Services at a large hospital involving over 500 hospital and community based volunteers. Donatella has a good understanding of volunteerism locally, in Australia and overseas. She is held in high regard within the volunteer sector and has been on the board of AAVA, the national professional association for volunteer managers. Donatella was included in the inaugural SA Honour Roll, in the 2009 – 2013 Who’s Who of Australian Women and received a Certificate of Recognition from AAVA for her work in the sector.She holds qualifications in Community Sector Management, training and assessment (Cert IV TAE) and volunteer program management, including a Vocational Graduate Certificate of Management (Learning).

Cost structure

NVSA has several cost structures.

General access training

Courses offered to the general public and volunteers in the community. Participants enrolsimply by ringing NVSA and booking in. Costs vary depending upon the session.

General Sessions: $22 GST inc pp NVSA members & $44 GST inc pp non-members.

Some general access training sessions are sponsored by Office for Volunteers and are freeto volunteers.

Some sessions will be a higher cost and may run over longer period, for example

HLTAID001 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR )

HLTAID003 Provide First Aid - full day followed by written assessment Child Safe Environment ( Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect )

full day including written assessment Mental Health First Aid - two day training

Onsite training

If your organisation has a larger group of participants requiring training, NVSA can provideon site training at a venue of your choice. Cost will include presenter and resources for upto 20 participants.

The cost is $395 + GST per 3 hour session for general sessions.( cost for higher number of participants can be negotiated )

Some sessions will be a higher cost and may run over longer period, for example

Cost structure

Consultancy services (POA)

NVSA staff are able to provide specialist assistance in developing or reviewing volunteer programs.

This may include

mentoring for National Standards compliance volunteer program auditing development / review of policies developing training or orientation manuals or volunteer training

NVSA specialises in the development of volunteer programs within organisations who do not currently have a volunteer program. The volunteer program is fully integrated into the organisation.

This includes

policy review and development research volunteer role development and risk assessment volunteer model development, including all forms, pro forma letters, interview

questions etc development of all training manuals and training / induction sessions implementation of the volunteer program including recruiting and training the first

group of volunteers staff survey and training evaluation

Programs are developed individually to suit each organisation

A packed 4 day (2 x 2 days) hands-on approach to working with volunteers featuring lots of practical tips and hints. Topics include:

The VPA utilises an approach developed by People First-Total Solutions to be administered through NVSA. The Audit involves:

The Essentials Of Managing Volunteers

This structured online course is aimed at potential or newly appointed Team Leaders,Coordinators or Managers. The course focuses on the key aspects of managingvolunteers and involves six weekly tusks, each covering a different topic area. Participantswill be provided with an in-depth study guide, a range of other resources to supportreflection on current practice and 1:1 encouragement and support from a course tutor whois also an experienced manager of volunteers.

Topics include

Volunteer motivations and expectations The legal aspects of involving volunteers Key systems, processes and documents to have in place Recruitment methods Ways to interview and screen volunteers Orientation and training options Team dynamics and personality traits Useful communication skills How to lead and supervise volunteers Methods to manage challenging behaviours and conflict

NVETS will acknowledge course work along with RPL for several units in theCHC4271 Certificate IV in Volunteer Program Coordination
