PARENT MEETING

A critical aspect of responsible coaching is building the team culture you want by gaining “buy-in” from the players parents. The parent meeting is a critical investment before any training kicks off. People tend to live up to expectations if they know what the expectations are.

Conduct the meeting in a private setting away from distractions to have the groups full attention.

Have an agenda: Welcome and Introductions. Who you are, background with coaching and soccer and personal life. Is this anyone's first time playing at a competitive level? What they liked about past coaches and didn’t like about past coaches? Build a rapport. Lay out the training plan for the entire year (Winter Training, Leagues, etc.)

Coaching Philosophy: Explain your values and share your coaching philosophy.

Honoring the game through “ROOTS”: Respecting Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and Self.

ELM Tree of Mastery: Effort, Learning and Mistakes are……….OK!

PARENT MEETING, CONT.

Goals and Hopes for the Season: Set realistic goals. Love soccer as much at the end of the season as at the beginning. Improve Skills and Tactical knowledge. Focus on improvement not “Wins” or “Trophies”. Those things will come with improvement. Setup a training schedule with your team and talk about expectations of training. Have the players want to return next year and ask for you as their coach. Setup outside of soccer events with your players and family members. (sleep overs, BBQ’s,

paintball…etc). Ask the parents what their goals and expectations are for the season. Give you some insight into

their child's motivation for playing. Have FUN!!!!!

Logistics: Make sure everyone has a practice and game schedules (Website, emails, texts, etc). Phone and email rosters. Make sure every player understands what they need for games and practices.

Ask for Volunteers/Team Manager: Team Manager is an important part of the team. (Coordinate Tournaments, Uniforms, Car Pools..etc) A good Team Manager lets the coach focus on coaching the team. They are invaluable to the team.

CHANGES TO THE 2017 SEASON

*End of October Region II will meet and more information will follow. As per the MYSA, they are pushing for 2017 for these changes to get it all figured out*

Page 12: 2016 North East United Coaches Meeting Bill Schmidt Director of Coaching Northeast United Soccer Club.

ACL INJURIES

*2015 Season the U17 Girls suffered 2 ACL injuries during the season and 1 immediately following the season*

1. Females had a tendency to land on straighter knees, which places more stress on the ligaments and the knee in general.

2. Female knees "buckled" inwards more than males; this directly stresses the ACL.

3. Females muscle activity tended to be the opposite of males.  The hamstring muscles (back of the leg) are very important in helping the ACL prevent the tibia from moving too far forward.  Male athletes activated the hamstrings sooner and more often than female athletes; this predisposes the females to ACL injury.

4. Females exhibited a muscular imbalance between the hamstrings and quadriceps (front of the thigh).  The hamstrings were significantly weaker than the quadriceps, relatively speaking.  Once again, this can make the female athlete more prone to injury.
