Welcome to the 2016 NJSHA Convention – Navigating the Future! We look forward to another year of fabulous, high-
quality speakers, reconnecting with colleagues and breathing in the beautiful ocean air. We are pleased to partner again this year with the New Jersey Academy of Audiology (NJAA) to bring you a fantastic audiology program. We also welcome back our vendors who join us each year to share the latest in employment opportunities, materials and technology.
The Convention Planning Committee has worked diligently this year to bring you exciting speakers and topics from all across the country. We have many interesting pediatric, adult and student topics for you to choose from, as well as additional student poster sessions and special interest topics for you to attend. Our Marni Reisberg Memorial Program will be presented by two of our pediatric speakers, Hilda Pressman and Justine Joan Sheppard, Managing Dysphagia in Schools: Adapting to Changing School Environments.

Highlighted Convention Speakers
Karen Anderson, PhD, CCC-A, F-AAA, has worked in clinical, public school and state-level (EHDI) settings to address the needs of children with hearing loss. She is director of Supporting Success for Children with Hearing Loss, providing online resources for professionals and families. Dr. Anderson is a past president of the
Educational Audiology Association, has received national recognition awards in educational audiology and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of South Florida. She is the author or co-author of many practical checklists, such as the SIFTER, LIFE-R and CHILD and co-author of the book Building Skills for School Success in the Fast-Paced Classroom, Steps to Assessment and other publications.
Dr. Anderson will present Estimating Access to Classroom Communication and Social Communication and Belonging in the Classroom on Thursday, April 14.
Mark brugger, MbA, is currently senior program manager for the Community & Learning Center at Learning Ally, a leading non-profit organization for supporting students with dyslexia/learning disabilities and visual impairments. Over the past few years, he created Learning Ally’s parent support
services, which include a webinar series, in-person training for the education and parent community, and parent to parent consultation services. In December 2014, he successfully launched the first online and interactive conference on dyslexia, Spotlight on Dyslexia, for parents and educators. He is a dyslexic himself with multiple learning disabilities and comes from a family with dyslexia. Mr. Brugger has been an advocate for children and adults with disabilities for decades and brings a unique perspective, as a parent of a special needs child, a special education community, an individual advocate, and a former case manager for college students with disabilities. He is a serial entrepreneur in technology and telecommunications with a degree from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Mr. Brugger will present Dyslexia: Making it Personal on Thursday, April 14.
Carly Caughlan, AuD, has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2003. She is the only audiologist, out of 15, that serves on the polytrauma team, performing tests of central auditory function, providing management and making further referrals. She is honored to work with veterans and loves what she does.
Dr. Caughlan will present Auditory Sequela Following Blast Related TBI on Friday, April 15.
lCDr Cathleen Davies, MS, CCC-SlP, CbIS, received a bachelor of science in Communication Disorders and a master of science in speech-language pathology from the Pennsylvania State University. She is a certified brain injury specialist through the Brain Injury Association of America.
Prior to joining the United States Public Health Service, LCDR Davies held multiple clinical and administrative roles within skilled nursing facilities, hospitals and home health settings. She served as the Acting Director of Education and Chief of Education and Training at the Defense and Veterans Brain Center (DVBIC). In that role, she was responsible for the development, dissemination and evaluation of traumatic brain injury (TBI) education materials for the Military Health System. LCDR Davies is currently a Senior Public Health Analyst with the Health Services and Resources Administration (HRSA).
lCDr Michael Kluk, MA, CCC-SlP, MbA, CbIS, is a speech-language pathologist and program manager of the TBI Clinic. He earned a master’s degree in speech pathology from Case Western Reserve University and a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from McGill University. LCDR Kluk holds the Certificate of
Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). He also possesses the Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) credential from the Brain Injury Association of America. LCDR Kluk has been in clinical practice for more than 15 years and has worked in subacute care, long-term acute care, outpatient rehab and public school settings. Additionally, LCDR Kluk earned a master of business administration degree, with specialization in knowledge and learning management, from Walden University and a graduate certificate in emergency management from the University of West Florida. LCDR Kluk recently returned from deployment to Conakry, Guinea with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
LCDR Davies and LCDR Kluk will present TBI in the Department of Defense: Policy and Practice on Thursday, April 14.
Judith Fuhrman, MS, CCC-SlP, is a licensed speech-language pathologist with varied therapeutic experience including rehabilitative, clinical, itinerant and classroom settings. Her expertise is in high order language function and its relationship to literacy. Ms. Fuhrman has presented at state, national and
international conferences. She currently works as a staff development specialist for reading and writing intervention, ages preschool to high school, in Riverside, California.
Ms. Fuhrman will present Project Read Framing Your Thoughts Writing Curriculum on Friday, April 15.
Ellen Hansen, MA, CCC-A, is an educational audiologist, providing services to patients from the community and the Summit Speech School, where she heads the Audiology Center. Previously she was a clinical pediatric audiologist with Central Jersey Otolaryngology and the director of the department
of audiology at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, New Jersey. Ms. Hansen has served on numerous state committees for the education of children with hearing loss as well as newborn hearing screening programs. She has lectured extensively on the evaluation and management of deaf and hard of hearing children and consults with school districts throughout the state. She served as adjunct professor at Seton Hall University and Montclair State University.
Ms. Hansen will present School Children With Auditory Impairment: Responsibilities of Speech and Hearing Professionals on Thursday, April 14.
Elaine russo Hitchcock, PhD, CCC-SlP, is an assistant professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Montclair State University. She has an active research agenda using multiple forms of visual biofeedback treatment for speech sound disorders. Dr. Hitchcock is also active in phonology research, focusing
on phonological development and voicing acquisition.
Dr. Hitchcock will present Visual Biofeedback Approaches for /r/ Intervention: Ultrasound, Acoustic, Electropalatography on Thursday, April 14.

Julie Hoffmann, MA, CCC-SlP, is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Saint Louis University (SLU). She has been on the faculty at SLU for more than 21 years and has taught courses in phonetics, phonological/articulation development and disorders,
survey of speech disorders, clinical instruction and speech-language development and disorders for the classroom teacher. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication disorders at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Ms. Hoffmann has given numerous presentations and workshops in her areas of specialization on childhood speech sound disorders including childhood apraxia of speech, phonological disorders, interdental and lateral lisps, and resistant to treatment sounds, especially /r/. She has had a private practice since the early 1990s providing assessment and treatment to children with severe speech sound disorders in Columbia, Illinois.
Ms. Hoffmann will present Dynamic Treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech on Friday, April 15.
Eric Hoover, PhD, has his doctorate from Northwestern University where he completed a dissertation on the effects of traumatic brain injury on speech understanding in noise. He is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of South Florida in the Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders. He is engaged in federally funded research in hearing aid signal processing, clinical evaluation of auditory processing impairment and neural and behavioral correlates of auditory processing. His research interests include the assessment and rehabilitation of suprathreshold auditory deficits.
Dr. Hoover will present Suprathreshold Auditory Deficits Associated With Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion on Friday, April 15.
Karen Kimberlin, MS, CCC-SlP, is a former public school speech-language specialist, hospital employee and early interventionist. Her current private practice work setting has provided her with the flexibility to attend workshops and trainings on dyslexia/reading and writing and to advocate for students
with language-based learning disabilities. Ms. Kimberlin is excited to have completed her Orton-Gillingham training last summer. In 2011, she served as NJSHA’s representative on the New Jersey Reading Disabilities Task Force. She is currently a board member of the New Jersey Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and a member of the New Jersey Dyslexia Handbook Committee.
Ms. Kimberlin will present Dyslexia Update: International, Federal and State News on Thursday, April 14.
robyn Merkel-Walsh, MA, CCC-SlP, is a licensed speech-language pathologist with more than 21 years of experience in the state of New Jersey. She is employed full time by the Ridgefield Board of Education and runs a private practice in Ridgefield, New Jersey. She is a lecturer for professional enhancement courses as part
of TalkTools® speakers bureau. She received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Montclair State University. Ms. Merkel-Walsh has specialized training in oral-placement disorders, feeding, apraxia, applied behavioral analysis, autism, myofunctional disorders, cranio-facial anomalies, Beckman techniques and PROMPT. She also has a specialized interest in integrative medicine and holistic healing.
Ms. Merkel-Walsh will present Solving the Puzzle of Autism: Using Tactile Therapy Techniques on Thursday, April 14.
Anne Oyler, AuD, CCC-A, is associate director in the Audiology Professional Practices unit at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She provides expert consultation, resources and support to ASHA members and other external and internal audiences. She has 30 years of professional
experience including service provision, clinical instruction, auditory research and public health. Her primary interests include educational audiology and early hearing detection and intervention.
Dr. Oyler will present Enhancing Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Service Delivery Across the Continuum on Friday, April 15.
Celeste roseberry-McKibbin, PhD, CCC-SlP, received her doctorate from Northwestern University. She is a professor of speech pathology and audiology at California State University-Sacramento. She is also currently a part-time itinerant speech pathologist in San Juan Unified School District. She has worked in
educational and medical settings with a wide variety of clients. She serves homeless persons in her community through direct work on the streets. Dr. Roseberry-McKibbin’s primary research interests are in the areas of assessment and treatment of culturally and linguistically diverse students with communication disorders as well as service delivery to students from low-income backgrounds. Dr. Roseberry-McKibbin is a Fellow of ASHA and winner of ASHA’s Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs. She received the national presidential Daily Point of Light Award for her volunteer work in building literacy skills of children in poverty.
Dr. Roseberry-McKibbin will present Service Delivery to Students Impacted by Poverty and Homelessness on Friday, April 15.
Kathleen Scaler Scott, PhD, CCC-SlP, is a practicing speech-language pathologist, board recognized fluency specialist and associate professor of speech-language pathology at Misericordia University. Her research interests are largely in cluttering, atypical disfluency, and clinician training and treatment
effectiveness. She is the co-editor of Cluttering: A Handbook of Research, Intervention and Education (Psychology Press, 2011) and co-author of Managing Cluttering: A Comprehensive Guidebook of Activities (Pro-Ed, Inc., 2013), both with Dr. David Ward. Dr. Scaler Scott has spoken nationally and internationally on the topics of fluency and social pragmatic disorders. She was the first coordinator of the International Cluttering Association.
Dr. Scaler Scott will present Assessment and Treatment of Cluttering and Stuttering in School-Age Children on Thursday, April 14.
Heather Warner, PhD, CCC-SlP, joined the faculty at Southern Connecticut State University as Assistant Professor in 2014. Prior to her faculty appointment at Southern, Dr. Warner was a speech-language pathologist at Yale New Haven Hospital, faculty at Yale University and the program manager of
the speech pathology department at the West Haven Veteran’s Administration. Dr. Warner has been practicing in acute care since 2000, during which time the primary focus of her clinical work was evaluating, treating and advocating for patients with speech, language and cognitive disorders. Research interests have been focused on swallowing evaluation in the acute care setting, with a recent concentration on swallow screening and the utility of the Yale Swallow Protocol. Dr. Warner received her doctorate in speech, language and hearing science from the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Warner will present Evidence-Based Practice in Dysphagia on Friday, April 15.

Enhancing Audiology and Speech-language Pathology Service Delivery Across the Continuum (Session 25)7:30 am – 8:30 am Changes in the health care, schools and early intervention have created the need for audiologists and speech-language pathologists to show functional outcomes and demonstrate the value of their services. Taking advantage of a broader range of service delivery options can help students and patients achieve goals more efficiently. Enhanced service delivery across the continuum of care includes the concept of practicing “at the top of the license” and can include using support personnel and telepractice. This presentation will discuss the forces behind these changes and how using service delivery options can make a difference.

Cameras, Photography and Photo release Policy Members of NJSHA will be designated at each NJSHA sponsored event to take photos for NJSHA-related publications (i.e. VOICES), NJSHA website, NJSHA social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) or in other Association materials. By registering and/or participating in any NJSHA sponsored event, you agree to allow NJSHA to use your photograph in any the noted media outlets as mentioned above.
These photographs will not be solicited for outside use; they will only be used by NJSHA for marketing and promotion purposes.
Personal photography is permitted, however, such photographs cannot be posted through NJSHA social media outlets unless sent to and pre-approved by NJSHA. To request approval, send photo(s) along with event description and photographer name to [email protected].
Volunteers Are Needed!Be a part of the Convention and volunteer!
room Moderators will introduce the speaker and read a short biography. They will be responsible for relaying any last-minute information to the attendees. Moderators will be responsible for picking up session materials from the NJSHA Registration Desk.
