Welcome‘Milnthorpe Men’s Forum is proud to welcome you to the 27th Milnthorpe Art Exhibition. We are the largest open art exhibition in the North West. Artist’s exhibit with us from as far afield as Manchester, Penrith, Lancashire and Yorkshire.

So what do we do?We show and sell the artist’s work, then we give away the proceeds.

The proceeds of the exhibition are shared between our hosts, St Thomas’ church - Restoration Fund (The fine old building you are standing in) and another local charity chosen by the Men’s Forum Chairman. The charity he has chosen to support is Springfield, which was established in Kendal in 1915 to provide a homely refuge to women who become homeless, often because of violence or abuse, and to help them to turn their life around.

Last year we donated £7000 and in the last 27 years we have given over £160000 to various, local good causes.

We hope you enjoy our exhibition, our catering, and take a chance on our raffle in order to support our charities.

Frances has lived in Kendal for 15 years. Inspired by the Lake District in all its facets, she is moved by colour, mood and light. Using paint in a free and boldstyle, exploring the surface effects in a painting, trying to achieve more significance than realism in the work. This can lead to more abstract pieces sometimes.

After a Fine Art Degree at Manchester College of Art and an Art teaching degree, Frances taught Art in the Manchester area for five years. Now her career has included illustration work for landscape architects, architects, advertising agencies, freelance illustration and also more teaching in adult education. All the while painting and exhibiting In galleries.

She works is in a variety of disciplines, Acrylic paint, guache and oil pastel and other mixed media methods, Ceramics and printing methods are very important.

Born in Lancashire a long time ago. Studied graphic design at Chesterfield Village of Art. A career in graphic arts followed.

Later Geoff became well known in the field of Musical Album Covers and Book illustration including pen and ink illustrations for children’s authors Michelle Paver and Cliff McNish. Also Geoff in his career completed many paintings and illustrations for “Games Workshop” and “Warhammer World”

Retiring to Arnside 19 years ago, Geoff is well known for paintings of the Lake District and his wildlife paintings. In particular his paintings inspired by the local story of “the last wolf”, reputedly killed at Humphrey Head.

Initially painting in Gouache he now favours working in Acrylic.

This painting in oil by Judith Da Fano (1919-2000) of St Peter’s Church Heversham is displayed for sale by sealed bid on behalf of that Church.

Judith was a renowned artist who moved to Laburnum House behind the church in Milnthorpe in 1987 from Pool Garth Cartmel Fell. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and in various galleries in Britain and the USA winning a silver medal at the Paris Salon in 1958 and 3 years later the gold medal. She included the Duke of Edinburgh among her patrons.

She was a great supporter of this exhibition over her years in Milnthorpe both by exhibiting and by chairing the selection panel.

For a number of years Dallam School, in collaboration with MILNTHORPE MEN’S FORUM, produced an art exhibition to show student work.

That community spirit is carried on in this years exhibition with the presentation of two pieces of work. One from GCSE exam, the other from the “A” LEVEL exam.
