Quality takes Shape in the Form
Before the first piece is cast, a form is designed and built that brings the designer’s vision to life. It’s here — inside well-built, dimensionally accurate, durable forms – that precast integrity, intrinsic value and quality are born.
For more than 40 years, Hamilton Form Company has delivered quality forms for precast/prestressedconcrete production. During that time our signature blue forms have come to symbolized the precaster’s commitment to quality and have brought vision to reality.

’m not particularly fond of change. I have my processes and my products;they work well and I like them the way they are. But, just because I amnot a fan of change doesn’t mean I don’t make changes. I started workingwith prestressed concrete in 1979. At that time the precast/prestressedconcrete industry was well under way, although most folks engaged inprecast and prestressed concrete were still figuring it out. e PCI Design Handbook for Precast/Prestressed Concrete was only around an inch thick.
But things change. A driver of change in our industry is the person whoasks, “Can we do this?’; “Why don’t we try this?” And, my favorite, “If we did it this way, we could…” From simple questions an industry has evolved, innovated, and changed. Among other advances, we haveembraced longer spans, higher concrete strengths, a variety of texturesand finishes and unique forming applications. In its seventh edition, the PCI Design Handbook is now twice as thick, and is regularly accompanied by numerous technical works, papers and publications regarding the industry. Many times over the amount of information isnow available; and all on a thumb drive if you so desire. Ahhh, anotherchange! Technology! I can ramble on about the design innovationscomputer analysis has brought to precast/ prestressed concrete; but I’m not going there. I’m going somewhere bigger, Texas. Yes, Texas is changing, too.
Texas is growing, rapidly. According to a report from Texas' Office of the State Demographer, the state’s population is expected to double by 2050. at would be over 54 million people! at growth requireshousing, hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and parking. Yes, we got thatand our industry is ready to move Texas forward. In the last ten years,PCMA of Texas’ membership has doubled, but PCMA’ s basic premisehasn’t changed. It remains a group of dedicated precast concrete manufacturers, suppliers and design professionals who set aside the competitive nature of the business to concentrate on the industry’s
growth. PCMA focuses on technical manufacturing innovation and education of design and construction professionals. Our producer members are all TxDOT Approved or PCI Certified. We share information throughinvolvement in manynational and international groups such as Precast/ Prestressed ConcreteInstitute (PCI), National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA),American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society for Testing andMaterials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (ASHTO) among many others.
Our Members’ involvement brings multiple benefits to project owners anddesigners. Flexibility, expanding aesthetics, high performance products, production efficiencies and environmental protections all contribute tostructures that meet the demands of durability, life safety and energy efficiency. Changing markets, customer demands and opportunities constantly raise the bar and yes, compel us to change and to continuallyimprove our products.
For all the changes, I rest easy because precast concrete remains a businessniche that relies on passionate involvement. PCMA’s membership caresabout our industry. Partnerships of owners, designers, precasters andsuppliers continue to collaborate on the projects you see in this publication. From iconic buildings to practical structures, precast concrete delivers aunique construction system that provides unmatched design freedomand inherent economy.
Please enjoy our Directory and Member Showcase and call any of ourmembers for valuable input on your next project. We will be happy tohelp, because within the precast/prestressed concrete industry, the morethings change, the more they stay the same.

High Performance Buildings and Precast Concrete
High performance building designs are becoming essential to meet new code requirements, as well as the expectations of funding entities, owners, and developers. State-of-the-art building designs require high performance building materials and building enclosure systems. Precast concrete is a high performance material that integrates easily with other systems and inherently provides the versatility, efficiency, and resiliency needed to meet the multi-hazard requirements and long-term demands of high performance structures. Precast concreteconstruction offers project stakeholders a whole host of benefits which will help optimize a structure, improve performance, and reducelife-cycle costs. A summary of the key attributes and benefits that precast concrete provides is shown below. (Continued on page 7)

Building Efficiency and Thermal ManagementA core goal of high performance buildings is to reduce energy consumption. A key component in accomplishing this goal is to optimize enclosure systems to provide excellent thermal management.
Heat is typically managed through insulation, or materials that have a high resistanceto heat flow (R-value). Precast concrete enclosure systems allow for continuous insulation (ci), running edge-to-edge in wall panels, which meets ASHRAE’s 90.1code requirement. Furthermore, most precast concrete enclosure systems, such as insulated sandwich wall panels, use composite or coated connectors to attach theouter wythe of concrete to the inner wythe. ese connectors do not thermally conduct, so thermal bridging through the wall panel is essentially eliminated.
Another benefit more unique to concrete is that of thermal mass. Precast concretehas a high heat capacity, which means it stores and releases heat slowly. is allowsan enclosure system to work like a battery storing up heat energy. Heat comes fromseveral sources beyond the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systemincluding the sun, lights, equipment, and occupants. When proper insulation is combined with very little thermal bridging, an enclosure system slows down heattransfer, which reduces the energy needed to heat and cool a structure. Howeverwhen combined with thermal mass, a portion of the internal heat energy is storedand made available to help maintain the desired indoor temperature. is further reduces the amount of energy needed to heat and cool a structure, thus improvingenergy efficiency even more. e result can be a significant reduction in the amountof energy needed to heat and cool a building – more than 30% relative to baselinecodes. is translates to less money spent in operating costs.
Another benefit of thermal mass is a delay in when the inside peak heating and cooling times occur. is is the result of thermal lag, or the time it takes for heat
to transfer. As temperatures rise and fall throughout a 24-hour period, there is apoint when the outside temperature peaks both high and low. e inside of thestructure is always trying to “catch-up” with the outside temperature. e greater thedifference in temperatures, the more energy required to maintain the indoor temper-ature. If the inside peak times can be shied to when the difference in temperature isless, the result will be less energy needed to accomplish the same task. Note: hot airalways flows towards cold air (second law of thermodynamics), so whether it’s hotteror colder only influences the direction of heat flow.
Combined EffectIt is important to evaluate the net effect of all of these components. Oen R-valuesfor an enclosure’s section are determined by calculating the material R-value, which issimply the summation of the component R-values. However, this approach does nottake into account thermal bridging and thermal mass. To better reflect the actual performance of an enclosure section an effective or performance R-value should bedetermined. ere are several soware programs available to run this type of analysis.Insulation providers and precast producers can also to help with this type of analysisas well.
Precast concrete systems usually have a greater effective R-value than their materialR-value, due to negligible thermal bridging, thermal mass, etc. By using the effectiveR-value for determining heating and cooling loads, HVAC designers may be able to reduce the size of their equipment and hence reduce first costs for a structure. is results in the systems operating more efficiently, further reducing life-cycle costs.
When combined with the benefits of precast concrete being an air barrier and avapor retarder at three-inches thick or greater, high performance precast provides all three (c.i., air barrier and vapor retarder) in one efficient system.
