Angels edge Tigers in game full of objections and ejections

Pedro Moura

Nineteen years ago, at a since-demolished Tiger Stadium, a rookie umpire named Mike Everitt called 16 third strikes, angered both the Angels and Tigers, and ejected both teams’ chapel leaders in a near-satirical afternoon affair.

Saturday night, at Comerica Park, about a mile east of the dated debacle, Everitt was at it again, but mostly in the Angels’ favor. Throughout their 3-2 victory, Everitt ejected four Detroit representatives: their Nos. 4 and 5 hitters, their hitting coach and their manager.

The Tigers made an array of complaints afterward; the Angels said little. “Mike Everitt was calling pitches down in the zone, it seemed like, for both guys,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said. “He was going to the edges of the zone. That was what he called all night.”

Before the controversy, the Angels prepared to face Michael Fulmer, who carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning the first time he faced them this season. The 23-year-old right-hander was not as successful Saturday, wild in his first start in eight days as the Tigers try to rest him for a potential playoff run.

Garrett Richards and Andrew Heaney, the two pitchers whose future the Angels’ depends on more than anyone not named Mike Trout, grew up a half-hour apart in the Oklahoma City suburbs. Fulmer hails from halfway between them.

Kole Calhoun began the game with a shot to second base, speared by Ian Kinsler. Trout followed by taking a high fastball, 95 mph, for a called third strike before Albert Pujols punched a hit to left field.

In the third inning, rookie Kaleb Cowart put a two-run shot into the right-field bleachers. Calhoun then singled, and Trout walked. When Pujols had a home run robbed by Justin Upton at the left-field fence, Calhoun took third and soon scored on a C.J. Cron single.

Fulmer fired Trout five changeups the third time he faced him, in the fourth inning. Trout swung at the first and fourth, but took the fifth for a called third strike. His two called strikeouts — and one suffered by Cliff Pennington — were the only undisputed called strikeouts among Everitt’s seven. The other victims were all Tigers, and they did not accept their fates kindly.

It began with catcher James McCann, who took a plainly low called third strike for the first out of the second inning. He said little or nothing on his way back to the dugout. The next inning, Miguel Cabrera argued at his ringing-up, which video replays showed was the correct call. And then Victor Martinez took issue with the first strike he saw and told Everitt as much. After an argument, Martinez was ejected. He extended it further, needing reinforcements to stay away from the umpire. From the dugout, he heaved his helmet onto the field.

Two innings later, after Kinsler was called out on strikes, Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus and hitting coach Wally Joyner were sent away. That was when the crowd began to chant derogatorily toward Everitt.

An inning later, the chants reached a refrain when J.D. Martinez was ejected. Martinez told reporters he asked Everitt if he was having a bad day. Everitt asked him what he said, and so he repeated it. And then Everitt ejected him. Martinez asked why he was ejected, and Everitt said because he made the comment twice.

The Tigers were facing journeyman left-hander Brett Oberholtzer, and Kinsler launched a home run on his fourth pitch. Three more men reached base before Oberholtzer retired anyone.

Scioscia said he stopped forcing things then, and he settled to finish three innings without yielding another run. Jhoulys Chacin, the man he replaced in the rotation, finished four scoreless innings in relief.

Two relievers secured the Angels the win, their tensest in months. “It was just one of them nights,” Trout said.

Mike Scioscia is considering expanding Angels' rotation

Pedro Moura

Mike Scioscia said Saturday in Detroit he is considering expanding his starting rotation to six men in September. It would be an unprecedented move for the Angels’ manager, in his 17th season on the job. He has never used six starters for multiple successive turns through the schedule.

Of course, this season is ripe for experimentation, what with the Angels more than 20 games out of the divisional lead and likely to be officially eliminated from playoff contention come mid-September.

Scioscia declined to handicap the likelihood he would act upon his considerations, and he has declined to directly connect specific names to his decision.

“I think there are some guys we definitely want to see in our rotation, some guys throwing the ball we want to keep in there,” he said. “We’ll make a determination next week as to what direction it goes and what guys are gonna come up and pitch. You’re gonna bring up a young pitcher who you feel is ready for the challenge and there’s a role for him.”

The players are fairly obvious. Left-hander Nate Smith, 25 on Sunday, will get a chance to pitch at some point in September, in the bullpen if not as a starter. He was the Angels’ All-Star Futures Game representative and is generally understood to have back-end potential.

“He’s really been pretty consistent the whole year from the reports we’re getting,” Scioscia said. “We’re definitely excited about his progress and the year he’s putting together down there at triple A. He’s having a good season, so that’s all you can ask for.”

Scioscia has also said he’d like to start right-hander Alex Meyer, the veteran of one major league start with Minnesota, in September. He started Saturday for Class-A Inland Empire, building up stamina after being out much of the season because of shoulder fatigue. The plan is for him to next throw in triple A, and he could join the Angels soon after that.

The Angels plan to call up “a few” players for Friday’s series opener in Seattle, their first game after rosters officially expand Sept. 1, and then more men Sept. 6, after triple-A Salt Lake’s season ends. Catcher Juan Graterol probably will be one of the early choices for customary insurance.

Short hops

Third baseman Yunel Escobar is eligible to return from the seven-day concussion disabled list, but will not be activated when the Angels return home to host Cincinnati on Monday. Escobar fouled a ball off his nose. “His nose is obviously very sore, still,” Scioscia said. … Kaleb Cowart started his first game at second base Saturday. Drafted and developed as a third baseman, the 24-year-old began playing the position this season with Salt Lake. “He can handle all the primary plays,” Scioscia said. “The only thing that he’s lacking right now is experience, and understanding some of the angles that as you play more, you start to absorb.”

Scioscia ponders 6-man rotation

Aug. 27, 2016 Updated 10:16 p.m.

By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER

DETROIT – Mike Scioscia said he’s considering doing something he hasn’t done in 17 years as a major league manager: using a six-man rotation.

The Angels obviously have a wide-open canvas for their starting rotation in 2017, so using six starters in September would allow them to see more pitchers.

“I think there are some guys that we definitely want to see in our rotation,” Scioscia said. “There are some guys throwing well you want to keep in there.

“We’ll make a determination next week as to what direction it goes when guys are going to come up and pitch.”

Scioscia wouldn’t say which pitchers they are considering adding to the rotation, but it’s likely that Nate Smith, the best starter at Triple-A this season, and Alex Meyer, who was acquired in an Aug. 1 trade, are on the list.

Smith’s next turn is Monday, so the soonest he could start for the Angels would be next weekend. He has allowed two runs in 132/3 innings in his last two starts.

Meyer threw 41 pitches in 21/3 innings, allowing three runs, at Class-A Inland Empire on Saturday night, after three outings in the rookie level Arizona League. Meyer may need to pitch two or three more times, perhaps in instructional league, to get up to 75 pitches before he could start in the majors.

The Angels already expanded their rotation tryouts, essentially, by adding Brett Oberholtzer to the rotation for Saturday’s game.

COWART AT SECOND

Kaleb Cowart has earned a chance to add to his versatility. Cowart, a natural third baseman who had started moving around the field last year, got his first major league opportunity at second on Saturday.

Cowart handled two routine plays and also made a nice play sliding to his left to grab a ground ball. He played six innings at second before moving to third when the Angels went with their best defense to try to hold a lead. Afterward, he said he felt fine at the position, where he'd played just 14 games in the minors this season.

“He’s worked hard at it,” Scioscia said before Saturday’s game. “He can handle all the primary plays and the only thing that he’s lacking right now is the experience and understanding some of the angles that as you play it more you start to absorb. He’s fine with the fundamental plays he has to make as a second baseman.”

Cowart’s only other major league appearance at a position other than third was a two-inning appearance at first base earlier this season.

Oberholtzer proves escape artist in Angels victory in Detroit

Aug. 27, 2016 Updated 10:17 p.m.

By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER

DETROIT – Brett Oberholtzer had been waiting all year to get a chance to show that he’s a starter, and four batters into that chance, he seemed to be on his way to a nightmare outing.

“Just stay in the moment,” Oberholtzer said he told himself. “Do what you can do. Execute one pitch at a time.”

That he did, allowing him to escape the first with only one run on the scoreboard, and then tack on two more zeroes before hitting his pitch limit.

Jhoulys Chacin, whose rotation job Oberholtzer took, followed with four scoreless innings in the Angels’ surprising 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.

It was one of the Angels’ least likely victories of the season, considering that they were starting a pitcher who hadn’t started all season and the Tigers were countering with rookie of the year candidate Michael Fulmer, who had dominated the Angels earlier this year.

After Fulmer easily put down the Angels in the top of the first and Oberholtzer got off to a rocky start in the bottom of the inning, their chances seemed slim.

On Oberholtzer’s fourth pitch of the game, Ian Kinsler hit a homer. Then he walked Cameron Maybin, with catcher Carlos Perez bailing him out by throwing out Maybin trying to steal. Then he walked Miguel Cabrera, and gave up a single to Victor Martinez.

“Obviously it’s hard out there when you’re facing the Tigers,” Oberholtzer said. “They have been scoring at will.”

He retired the next two hitters and then came out in the second looking like a different pitcher. He retired six of seven hitters, including taking advantage of umpire Mike Everitt’s generous strike zone, which would quickly become one of the game’s major issues.

Page 12: 2016 Los Angeles Angels Record: 55-74 (5th AL-Western)mlb.mlb.com/documents/4/8/4/198140484/Reds_vs_LA_Angels_w3d05gzy.pdf · 2016 Los Angeles Angels Record: 55-74 (5th AL-Western)

After Cabrera was called out on strikes in the third, Victor Martinez argued the first strike on him and he got ejected. In the fifth, hitting coach Wally Joyner and Manager Brad Ausmus were both tossed for arguing Everitt’s strike zone. Later that inning, J.D. Martinez got rung up and ejected.

All in all, Everitt called seven hitters out on strikes, three Angels – including Mike Trout twice – and four Tigers.

“Mike Everitt was calling the pitches at the bottom of the zone for both guys,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “He was going to the edges of the zone. That’s what he was calling all night.”

Chacin was on the mound during the fifth-inning ejections, on his way to four outstanding innings. He gave up just three singles and a walk, which certainly reinforced Scioscia’s idea he’s better out of the bullpen.

Oberholtzer, Chacin and relievers J.C. Ramirez and Fernando Salas held down the Tigers just enough to make the Angels’ three runs hold.

Two came off the bat of Kaleb Cowart, who hit a homer off Fulmer in the third. C.J. Cron drove in the other with a single.

Final: Angels surprise Tigers after shaky start

“Nothing surprises me any more,” he said. “I’ve been playing this game for enough time now. I know I just have to do my job. Whatever they need, I’m going to do it. I’m happy I could today.”

Angels Notes: Nate Smith, Alex Meyer may be part of six-man rotation in September

Aug. 27, 2016 Updated 8:43 p.m.

BY JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER

DETROIT – Mike Scioscia said he’s considering doing something he hasn’t done in 17 years as a major league manager: using a six-man rotation.

The Angels obviously have a wide open canvas for their starting rotation in 2017, so using six starters in September would allow them to see more pitchers.

“I think there are some guys that we definitely want to see in our rotation,” Scioscia said. “There are some guys throwing well you want to keep in there. We’ll make a determination next week as to what direction it goes when guys are going to come up and pitch.”

Page 13: 2016 Los Angeles Angels Record: 55-74 (5th AL-Western)mlb.mlb.com/documents/4/8/4/198140484/Reds_vs_LA_Angels_w3d05gzy.pdf · 2016 Los Angeles Angels Record: 55-74 (5th AL-Western)

He has allowed two runs in 13 2/3 innings in his last two starts.

Meyer threw 41 pitches in 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, at Class-A Inland Empire on Saturday night, after three outings in the rookie level Arizona League. Meyer is now expected to make two or three starts at Triple-A to get up to about 75 pitches before the Angels could bring him up, so he would be more of a mid-September option.

The Angels already expanded their rotation tryouts, essentially, by adding Brett Oberholtzer to the rotation for Saturday’s game.
