FOREWORD

This publication is intended for use by local and state governmental departments and units, Professional Engineers,Architects and other construction professionals, and the general public.

All licenses issued by the Board of General Contractors expire on December 31st each year. Licenses not renewed60 days after that date (December 31) shall become invalid, in accordance with provisions of General Statute 87, Sec-tion 10. All licenses renewed by the Board for the calendar year prior to March 1, 201 are listed in this directory.

Licenses of individuals, partnerships and corporations are listed according to alphabetical order. The precise nameunder which the license was issued is listed along with the licensees most current address provided at time of print-ing. The license number appears to the right of each name.

Limitations and classifications for each license are shown directly under the address. LIMITEDBUILDING for exam-ple, indicates the holder of a LIMITED limitation and BUILDING classification of license. More than one classificationof license may be held by licensees; licenses listed as UNCLASSIFIED meet the qualifications for all classifications oflicensure.

Licenses may be issued in the following classifications:

Classification(a) A general contractor must be certified in one of five

classifications. These classifications are:

(1)

(2) Residential Contractor. This classification cov-ers all construction activity pertaining to the con-struction of residential units which are required toconform to the residential building code adoptedby the Building Code Council pursuant to G.S.143-138; all site work, driveways, sidewalks, andwater and wastewater systems ancillary to theaforementioned structures and improvements;and the work done as part of such residentialunits under the specialty classifications of S(Insu-lation), S(Interior Construction), S(Masonry Con-struction), S(Roofing), S(Swimming Pools), andS(Asbestos).

(3) Highway Contractor. This classification coversall highway construction activity including but notlimited to: grading, paving of all types, installationof exterior artificial athletic surfaces, relocation ofpublic and private utility lines ancillary to the prin-cipal project, bridge construction and repair, culvert construction and repair, park ing decks,sidewalks, curbs, gutters and storm drainage.

Includes installation and erection of guard rails,fencing, signage and ancillary highway hard-ware; covers paving and grading of airport andairfield runways, taxiways, and aprons, includingthe installation of fencing, signage, runway light-ing and marking; and covers work done under

(4) Public Utilities Contractor. This classificationincludes those whose operations are the perfor-mance of construction work on water andwastewater systems and on the subclassifica-tions of facilities set forth in G.S. 87-10(3). TheBoard may issue a license to a public utilitiescontractor that is limited to any of the subclassi-fications set forth in G.S. 87-10(3) for which thecontractor qualifies. A public utilities contractorlicense covers work done under the specialtyclassifications of S(Boring and Tunneling),PU(Communications), PU(Fuel Distribution),PU(ElectricalAhead of Point of Delivery), PU(Water Lines and Sewer Lines), PU(Water Purifi-cation and Sewage Disposal), and S(SwimmingPools).

(5) Specialty Contractor. This classification coversall construction operation and performance ofcontract work outlined as follows:

(A) H(Grading and Excavating). Covers the dig-ging, moving and placing of materials formingthe surface of the earth, excluding air and water,in such a manner that the cut, fill, excavation,grade, trench, backfill, or any similar operationcan be executed with the use of hand and powertools and machines commonly used for thesetypes of digging, moving and material placing.

Building Contractor. This classification covers all building construction activity including: commercial, industrial, institutional, and all residential building construction. It includes parking decks; all site work, grading and paving of parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, and gutters;

the specialty classifications of S(Boring and Tun-storm drainage, retaining or screen walls, and hardware and accessory structures; and indoor and outdoor recreational facilities including natural and artificial surface athletic fields, running tracks, bleachers and seating. It also covers work done under the specialty classifica-tions of S(Concrete Construction), S(Insulation), S(Interior Construction), S(Marine Construction), S(Masonry Construction), S(Roofing), S(Metal Erection), S(Swimming Pools), and S(Asbestos)

Covers work on earthen dams and the use ofexplosives used in connection with all or any partof the activities described in this Subparagraph.Also includes clearing and grubbing, and erosioncontrol activities.

(B) S(Boring and Tunneling). Covers the con-struction of underground or underwater pas-sageways by digging or boring through andunder the earths surface including the bracingand compacting of such passageways to makethem safe for the purpose intended. Includespreparation of the ground surfaces at points ofingress and egress.

(C) PU(Communications). Covers the installationof the following:

(i) All types of pole lines, and aerial and un-derground distribution cable for telephonesystems;

(ii) Aerial and underground distribution cable forCable TV and Master Antenna TV Systemscapable of transmitting R.F. signals;

(iii) Underground conduit and communicationcable including fiber optic cable; and

(iv) Microwave systems and towers, includingfoundations and excavations where re -quired, when the microwave systems arebeing used for the purpose of transmittingR.F. signals; and installation of PCS or cellu-lar telephone towers and sites.

(D) S(Concrete Construction). Covers the con-struction and installation of foundations, pre-castsilos and other concrete tanks or receptacles, pre-stressed components, and gunite applications,but excludes bridges, streets, sidewalks, curbs,gutters, driveways, parking lots and highways.

(E) PU(ElectricalAhead of Point of Delivery).Covers the construction, installation, alteration,maintenance or repair of an electrical wiring sys-tem, including substations or componentsthereof, which is or is intended to be owned,operated and maintained by an electric powersupplier, such as a public or private utility, a util-ity cooperative, or any other properly franchisedelectric power supplier, for the purpose of furnishing electrical serv ices to one or more customers.

(F) PU(Fuel Distribution). Covers the construc-tion, installation, alteration, maintenance or repairof systems for distribution of petroleum fuels,petroleum distillates, natural gas, chemicals andslurries through pipeline from one station toanother. Includes all excavating, trenching andbackfilling in connection therewith. Covers theinstallation, replacement and removal of aboveground and below ground fuel storage tanks.

(G) PU(Water Lines and Sewer Lines). Coversconstruction work on water and sewer mains,

water service lines, and house and buildingsewer lines as defined in the North Carolina StateBuilding Code, and covers water storage tanks,lift stations, pumping stations, and appur -tenances to water storage tanks, lift stationsand pumping stations. Includes pavementpatching, backfill and erosion control as part ofsuch construction.

(H) PU(Water Purification and Sewage Disposal).Covers the performance of construction work onwater and wastewater systems, water andwastewater treatment facilities and all site work,grading, and paving of parking lots, driveways,sidewalks, and curbs and gutters which areancillary to such construction of water andwastewater treatment facilities. Covers the workdone under the specialty classifications ofS(Concrete Construction), S(Insulation), S(InteriorConstruction), S(Masonry Construction), S(Roof-ing), and S(Metal Erection) as part of such workon water and wastewater treatment facilities.

(I) S(Insulation). Covers the installation, alterationor repair of materials classified as insulatingmedia used for the nonmechanical control oftemperatures in the construction of residentialand commercial buildings. Does not include theinsulation of mechanical equipment and ancillarylines and piping.

(J) S(Interior Construction). Covers the installa-tion of accoustical ceiling systems and panels;drywall partitions (load bearing and nonloadbearing), lathing and plastering, flooring andfinishing, interior recreational surfaces, windowand door installation, and installation of fix-tures, cabinets and millwork. Includes theremoval of asbestos and replacement withnontoxic substances.

(K) S(Marine Construction). Covers all marineconstruction and repair activities and all types ofmarine construction in deepwater installationsand in harbors, inlets, sounds, bays, and chan-nels; covers dredging, construction and installa-tion of pilings, piers, decks, slips, docks, andbulkheads. Does not include structures requiredon docks, slips and piers.

(L) S(Masonry Construction). Covers the installa-tion, with or without the use of mortar or adhe-sives, of the following:

(i) Brick, concrete block, gypsum partition tile,pumice block or other lightweight and fac-simile units and products common to themasonry industry;

(ii) Installation of fire clay products and refrac-tory construction; and

(iii) Installation of rough cut and dressed stone,marble panels and slate units, and installa-tion of structural glazed tile or block, glassbrick or block, and solar screen tile or block.

(M) S(Railroad Construction). Covers the building,construction and repair of railroad lines including:

(i) The clearing and filling of rights-of-way;

(ii) Shaping, compacting, setting and stabilizingof road beds;

(iii) Setting ties, tie plates, rails, rail connectors,frogs, switch plates, switches, signal mark-ers, retaining walls, dikes, fences and gates;and

(iv) Construction and repair of tool sheds andplatforms.

(N) S(Roofing). Covers the installation and repair ofroofs and decks on residential, commercial,industrial, and institutional structures requiringmaterials that form a watertight and weather-resistant surface. The term materials shall bedefined for purposes of this Subparagraph toinclude, among other things, cedar, cement,asbestos, clay tile and composition shingles, alltypes of metal coverings, wood shakes, singleply and built-up roofing, protective and reflectiveroof and deck coatings, sheet metal valleys,flashings, gravel stops, gutters and downspouts,and bituminous waterproofing.

(O) S(Metal Erection). Covers:

(i) The field fabrication, erection, repair andalteration of architectural and structural shapes,plates, tubing, pipe and bars, not limited to steelor aluminum, that are or may be used as struc-tural members for buildings, equipment andstructure; and

(ii) The layout, assembly and erection by weld-ing, bolting or riveting such metal products as,but not limited to, curtain walls, tanks of all types,hoppers, structural members for buildings, tow-ers, stairs, conveyor frames, cranes and cranerunways, canopies, carports, guard rails, signs,steel scaffolding as a permanent structure, rig-ging, flagpoles, fences, steel and aluminum sid-

ing, bleachers, fire escapes, and seating for sta-diums, arenas, and auditoriums.

(P) S(Swimming Pools). Covers the construction,service and repair of all swimming pools.Includes:

(i) Excavation and grading;

(ii) Construction of concrete, gunite, and plastic-type pools, pool decks, and walkways, andtiling and coping; and

(iii) Installation of all equipment includingpumps, filters and chemical feeders. Doesnot include direct connections to a sanitarysewer system or to portable water lines, northe grounding and bonding of any metalsurfaces or the making of any electricalconnections.

(Q) S(Asbestos). This classification covers renova-tion or demolition of activities involving the repair,maintenance, removal, isolation, encapsulation,or enclosure of Regulated Asbestos ContainingMaterials (RACM) for any commercial, industrial,or institutional building, whether public or private.It also covers all types of residential building con-struction involving RACM during renovationand/or demolition activities.

(R) S(Wind Turbine). This classification covers theconstruction, installation and repair of wind tur-bines, wind generators and wind power units. Itincludes assembly of blades, generator, turbinestructures and towers. It also includes ancillaryfoundation work, field fabrication of metalequipment and structural support components.

(b) An applicant may be licensed in more than oneclassification of general contracting provided the appli-cant meets the qualifications for the classifications,which includes passing the examination for the classifi-cations in question. If an applicant passes the building,public utilities and highway examinations, the licensegranted to the applicant will carry with it a designation ofunclassified.

General Statute 87-10 provides that licenses designated as LIMITED authorize the holder to practice general con-tracting for projects costing up to $500,000. Those designated INTERMEDIATE are authorized to practice general con-tracting on single projects costing up to $1,000,000. UNLIMITED license holders may practice general contracting onprojects without restriction as to the value of any single project.
