With over 30 years of running summer schools for young people

from all over the world, Kings Summer has given thousands of

students a summer they’ll never forget.

To give our students the best possible experience, we make sure all

our summer centres are in ideal locations, with excellent facilities

and highly-motivated staff, many of whom return to the Kings

Summer family year after year.

We pride ourselves on offering plenty of individual support and

attention, and ensure that each child’s safety and well-being are

always our top priorities.

The range and flexibility of our courses allow us to cater for a host of

different interests, and for 2016 we are delighted to be offering

residential courses at a fantastic new location — South Bank

University (Central London) in the UK.

We are also pleased to introduce a range of new specialist activities,

which can be booked in conjunction with the main residential

summer course. These include horse riding and tennis in Bath, and

performing arts in Cheltenham.

We look forward to welcoming your child.

Mary Doody Director of Kings Summer

OUR ACTIVITIESAt Kings, we know it’s important that every day is busy, fun-packed and different. For this reason, we complement lessons with a vast range of activities, ensuring that there is something new and exciting to enjoy every single day.

Each centre offers a variety of structured and supervised daytime activities. These have been specifically designed to make the most of the facilities and surroundings at each location.

Students can play beach volleyball in LA, learn to climb at Pangbourne, develop their photography skills at Bath, enjoy a refreshing swim at Farringtons — all centres have lots to offer. Specific courses have been designed for each centre, more information about which can be found on our website.

l Students at some of our Residential Summer Centres can also select specialist ‘add on’ sessions (supplement applies), which include tennis, horse riding, film craft, performing arts, intensive English tuition, and academic English lessons.

l Our Vacation Extra Centres also offer supervised activities each day, which can take place both off and on site.

Daytime activities

In all of the residential summer centres, social activities are arranged each evening to encourage fun, friendship and English practise.

Students usually have one main activity each evening, followed by some supervised ‘chill out’ time at the end of the day.

Evening activities are generally quiz nights, discos and talent shows, and occasionally may also include indoor or outdoor sports, photo challenge, swimming and treasure hunts.

Our Vacation Extra centres offer 3 – 4 evening activities per week.

Evening activities

OUR EXCURSIONSWe have carefully planned excursions to areas of interest that we feel will best enhance students’ experience. We aim to offer a mix of cultural and historical visits as well as some shopping trips and visits to entertainment venues. Our centre-specific factsheets give full details of all the excursions we offer. See kingssummer.com/more.

For information on additional sightseeing trips available with our courses, please see page 69.

In the US we run three full-day excursions each week to make the most of the iconic cities in which we are located.

Destinations include famous landmarks such as the Empire State Building, museums such as the Natural History Museum, theme parks including Six Flags and Universal Studios, and famous beaches including Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach.

In the UK every centre will have both full-day and half-day excursions which will allow students to explore some of the most famous cities in the country, including London, Brighton, Oxford, Bath, Portsmouth and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Students at our Central London centre will have daily visits into London as well as full-day excursions at the weekend.

LESSONS AND LEARNINGKings Summer offers young learners and teenagers an excellent opportunity to use, practise and improve their English skills in a fun learning environment. Our course material is intended primarily to help students develop their speaking and listening skills.

All students are tested on the first day of their stay to determine their level — both written and oral testing takes place to determine the correct class for each student. Each class has a maximum of 15 students. Students are placed in one of six levels, from Beginner to Advanced.

Excursion lessons have been programmed into the timetable at our residential centres. The excursion lesson is a chance for students to learn more about the destinations on offer that week. The teachers often do follow-up activities in class about the destinations visited.

Students are given coursebooks on a loan basis in their lessons. These have been carefully selected to help enhance learning, develop linguistic skills and improve students’ confidence in listening and speaking. Students also complete a number of interactive projects during their stay to allow them to practise their language more freely.

As students progress through the course, they will be adding to a portfolio of work which they can take home and show their parents. Students will receive an end-of-course report on their academic studies and a certificate of attendance.

A WORLD OF FRIENDSHIPKings Summer attracts students from over 50 countries each year, so your own child will share great times with friends from all over the world. This means they will be able to experience other cultures when they are in the UK or USA. It also means that their language skills will improve as they will need to communicate with their new friends through the shared use of English.

STUDENT CAREStudent welfare and safety are always our top priorities at Kings Summer. We understand and acknowledge the trust that you put in us, and take our responsibility very seriously.

To ensure that students are safe at all times we have put the following measures into place:

• All lessons and activities are compulsory.

• At our Vacation Extra centres the homestay providers and residence supervisors are responsible for students at their accommodation, and ensure that curfews are followed every night.

• In the residential summer centres House Parents or Night Supervisors monitor the halls of residence throughout the night time period.

• Teachers take attendance registers at the start of every lesson.

• Registers are taken on activities and excursions.

• Individual students are allocated a staff member to act as their guardian during their stay.

• There is a designated Welfare Manager at each of our locations.

• We ensure high staff to student ratios.

• Students are all issued with ID cards and wristbands with emergency contact information.

• There are designated staff with first aid training at each centre.

• A 24-hour emergency phone service for students, staff and parents is in place.

• We have a regularly reviewed child safeguarding policy.

• Child safeguarding forms an integral part of staff training.

Student Care measures

12

Page 15: 2016 Kings Summer Brochure

STUDENT CARE

With a very full and active programme we know how important it is for students to eat nutritious food. All meals will be provided for students, either at the school or by their homestay host. On full-day excursions, packed meals will be provided. We also cater for students with special dietary requirements.

Kings Summer offers a student bank service so that students can feel safe in knowing their money, passport and travel documents are kept in a safe place. This service allows us to help the students manage their money, and also reduce the likelihood of them losing it.

We’ve developed an excellent value insurance policy specially designed for international students, in conjunction with Guard.Me in the USA and Endsleigh Insurance in the UK.

The insurance policy gives a very high level of cover and will protect students in the case of an accident or emergency, as well as the need for urgent travel home.

Students’ personal possessions are also covered. To make sure your child is fully protected, simply complete the insurance form. For full details about levels of cover and costs, see the Information and Support section of our website: kingssummer.com

Nourishing meals

All students attending our programmes must book a Kings arrival/departure transfer unless travelling with a group leader or a responsible adult.

Students who book this service will have a meet and greet service on arrival (a nominated driver or a Kings member of staff) and will be taken directly to their centre. Equally, on departure all individual students will be checked in by Kings staff or a driver. Groups are normally checked in by their group leader. We also welcome students who have booked an Unaccompanied Minor service.
