Team Notes

• This will be 15th meeting between The Citadel and Virginia Tech with the last matchup coming in 2014 when the Bulldogs defeated the Hokies 6-2. • This will be the second time the Bulldogs and Hokies have squared off in the first game of the season. The Bulldogs took the 2014 season opener for both teams 6-2.• The Citadel is 11-13 in season openers and has won its last three.• Coach Fred Jordan is two victories shy of his 800th career win.

MLB Draft

• The Citadel had three players selected in the MLB draft last June (LHP James Reeves, RHP Skylar Hunter, RHP Austin Mason), the most players drafted from one team since the 2009 squad when four Bulldogs were selected.

Home sweet home

• The Bulldogs are 10-7 in home openers under Coach Jordan.• The Citadel plays 11 of its first 13 games at Riley Park with the only two away games coming against in-state foes Winthrop and College of Charleston. The Bulldogs have six home games in February and 11 in March.• Beginning in 2007, The Citadel has opened the past nine seasons in Joe Riley Park.

Preseason Honors

• Austin Mapes and JP Sears were voted to the preseason all-conference second-team on Feb. 11th.• Mapes held the fourth-best batting average on the team in 2015 at .308 and was second on the team with 45 runs scored. The junior tallied 65 hits and ended the 2015 season with a .460 slugging percentage. Mapes also swiped 10 bases.• Sears made 17 appearances with 13 starts last season and was second on the team with 75.2 innings pitched. The sophomore recorded 82 strikeouts last year and led the Bulldogs in runners picked off with six. Sears held opponents he faced to a .276 batting average and finished the season with a 4.28 earned-run average.

Returners

• The Bulldogs return 17 lettermen from last year’s 28-30 squad. • 18 position players and 13 pitchers return from last year’s team for the 2016 season.• This year’s squad consists of eight seniors: INF Bret Hines, C Stephen Windham, OF Steven Hansen, OF Jason Smith, OF Mike Deese, RHP Zach Lavery and LHP Nate Brecklin.• Of the starters returning, Steven Windham recorded the highest batting average at .305 in 2015. The senior tallied a .416 slugging percentage and a .398 on-base percentage. • Jason Smith was a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts last year. Junior Austin Mapes was the next best on the team, swiping 10 bases on 13 attempts.• Smith also held the longest reached base streak last season at 25 games.

pitching

• Last season, The Citadel boasted the best ERA (4.46) and opposing batting average (.272) in the Southern Conference.

The ‘Dogs will have some gaps to fill in the bullpen after losing three MLB draft picks as well as seven others but Coach Jordan and company have five pitchers returning that have game experience under their belt.• The Bulldogs pitching staff led the SoCon with 509 batters struck out and were second in the conference with 155 batters struck out looking. The ‘Dogs also took top honors in runners picked off with 20 and allowed the fewest home runs (29) in the conference.• The Citadel finished third in the SoCon in saves last season due in large part to Skylar Hunter who recorded all 13. • Senior Zach Lavery recorded a team-best 2.65 ERA last year in 37.1 innings of relief. Lavery allowed 11 earned runs and retired 26 batters.

In-state Opponents

• Of the Bulldogs 56 games this season, 22 will be against opponents from the state of South Carolina.• Dating back to 1965, this will be just the seventh time The Citadel has hosted South Carolina and Clemson in the same year.• This will be the first appearance for Clemson in the Lowcountry since 1990. It will also be the first time since 2004 that the Bulldogs and Tigers have faced each other.

in the SoCon

• The Citadel is tied with Western Carolina for a league-leading 13 regular-season championships. Furman is the next closest member with four titles.• In 28 appearances in the Southern Conference tournament, The Citadel holds a 72-37 record.

head coach fred jordan25th Season | The Citadel, 1979Citadel Record: 798-632 | Career Record: Same

Fred Jordan is in his 25th season as the head coach of his alma mater’s baseball program with a record of 798-632, making him the winningest coach in Southern Conference history.

Jordan has instilled the ideals of belief, faith and trust into The Citadel baseball program, and players are known for playing “The Citadel Way” – Long, Hard and Fast. The Citadel baseball program has been recognized for its tenacious pace of play and tremendous discipline that Jordan sets forth in the everyday rigors of practice and throughout the season.

Over the past 23 seasons, The Citadel has averaged more than 33 wins a season including 43 in 2010, just three shy of the school record. On March 31, 2010, the Bulldogs blanked Charleston Southern 5-0 to give Jordan his 642nd career win and move him past Chal Port as the winningest coach in school history.

A 1979 graduate of The Citadel, Jordan has led the Bulldogs to seven SoCon tournament championships and berths in the NCAA Regionals (1994-95, 1998-99, 2001, 2004 and 2010) while the team has also captured five regular season conference crowns. The Citadel has an incredible mark of 60-29 (.674) in the SoCon tournament and won the title six times without suffering a loss.

The Citadel has won a game in four of its seven appearances in the NCAA tournament under Jordan, most recently a 7-2 victory over Virginia Tech in the opening round of the 2010 re-gional in Columbia, S.C.

At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Jordan received the SoCon Coach of the Year Award for the fourth time in his career following his selection in 1995, 1999 and 2002. In addition to the 43-win season, the Bulldogs also won 41 games in 1999 and have captured at least 31 victories in all but five campaigns with Jordan at the helm.

The success enjoyed by the Bulldogs under Jordan has been reflected in the number of play-ers The Citadel has sent to professional baseball. Beginning with Gettys Glaze in 1992, a total of 34 players have been selected in the MLB Draft, with Dallas McPherson, current assistant coach Britt Reames and Chris McGuiness reaching “The Show.”

Jordan was named The Citadel’s head coach on Jan. 14, 1992, becoming the fifth man to hold that position in the program’s modern-day history (beginning in 1954). He was selected to replace Port, his former college head coach, when the Hall of Famer announced his retire-ment in 1991 after a 27-year run.

Jordan received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from The Citadel in 1979 and a master’s degree in education in 1987. He lettered as a pitcher for the Bulldogs from 1976-79 and won an Ace (Pitching) Award and was a member of a SoCon championship squad his senior season.

A Charleston native and 1975 graduate of Garrett High School, he is married to the for-mer Debra Mattox of Charleston. The couple has a daughter, Kristen, who graduated from Clemson in 2004, and a son, Kyle, who played baseball for his father and graduated from The Citadel in 2010.
