ack in the day, if Mom whipped up a box-mix cake and taped a “pin the tail on the donkey” game to the wall, you had one rip-roaring kids party. But those days are long gone. Today’s families enjoy going all out when celebrating special birthdays, quinceañeras,

bar and bat mitzvahs and more. And for super busy, Pinterest-averse parents, the best solution may be to go pro and hire a party planner.

Pretty Posh Events is based in North Brunswick, and owner Abby Ayeh knows how to take parties to the next level. To fulfill her clients’ visions, Ms. Ayeh has traveled across the country and even gone abroad to create upscale parties for adults and kids alike.

“Gone are the days of cake and a few balloons,” says Ms. Ayeh. Parties for teens and tweens “are very thematic and carried to another level.”

She has vendors whom she can tap to supply her clients with rentals of mini versions of classic chievari chairs or ultra-chic acrylic ghost chairs. If desired, Ms. Ayeh will provide unique chair covers decorated with lush rows of pearls, sequins, ruffles, or other luxurious décor.

Pretty Posh Events helps take celebrations, such as Sweet 16 parties, to a different level.

Parties for young people aren’t

necessarily kids’ stuff anymore

By Maryanne Corsini

“It’s all customized,” stresses the former hedge fund employee who turned to party planning as a way of satisfying her passion for design. (After working closely with a wedding planner to create her own perfect day, then creating dream-come-true parties for friends and families, Ms. Ayeh became certified as an event planner through the New York-based Event Leadership Institute. She’s never looked back.)

One stand-out Sweet Sixteen party designed by Ms. Ayeh was, as she puts it, “full-blown glam… like a wedding reception.”

An emcee kept the events moving throughout the evening, while the kids danced to DJ-supplied hits. The lavender-and-mint color scheme extended from the uplighting to the candy buffet and mini cupcakes to the sunglasses and glow sticks. But the highlight of the evening was when the lights dimmed and an electronic robot bopped into the room. “The kids went wild,” says Ms. Ayeh. But this level of entertainment comes at a price.

Ms. Ayeh charges a basic service fee, which covers her design time, setup and takedown, and from there she works with her clients to meet their budget. She states that the per-child price varies depending on the number of guests. But for the right price, she will have structures built, install temporary hedgerows, or have her team of graphic designers create wall-sized banners to carry out the theme to the nth degree.

or parents of young children, perhaps one of the most important decisions they’ll make is finding the right

pediatrician.First-time parents are finding someone for the first time, while

families that are new to the area may find themselves changing doctors.

Sorting through all the choices can be daunting. But some area pediatricians weighed in on what qualities make for a good child’s doctor and what factors parents should consider when choosing the person to care for their children.

“As a physician, every day you’re interacting with people

and helping people solve problems,” says Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, chairman of pediatrics at Princeton HealthCare System, also with Princeton Nassau Pediatrics (princetonnassaupediatrics.com).

“Pediatrics is medically challenging,” he says of a branch of medicine where doctors care for everyone from newborns to young adults. “So we’re dealing with multiple developmental stages and multiple disease processes.”

Dr. Alicia Brennan, the medical director of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Pediatric Care at University Medical Center of Princeton (www.chop.edu), says parents need to feel comfortable asking their child’s doctor questions. She adds that parents also should look for a doctor who does not seem rushed.

“They need to feel that they’re being heard. Because I think too often, parents come into the hospital with concerns that either their pediatrician didn’t hear them or didn’t address the questions that they were asking,” says Dr. Brennan, a pediatrician for 19 years. “If you’re having that sense as a parent, then you’re not completely trusting the information that you’re getting.”

In selecting that doctor, he suggested checking a doctor’s background on the Internet looking for his or her biography to see where the doctor trained at and if he or she is board certified. Another step is to look for a pediatrician whose office is near where the parents live, given the amount of visits they will make. Another consideration is availability.

“Pediatrics is also a kind of 24-7 business, kids get sick every day. So we keep our offices open seven days a week,” he says. “We work really hard (because) we want the families seeing the same physician, for wellness and sick visits, as much as possible.”

Dr. Mandelbaum has been a pediatrician for 15 years, trained at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. In his career, he was able to observe older doctors, and learn what made them successful.

Asked what makes for a good child’s doctor, Dr. Mandelbaum points to the need for communication skills.

“I think in order to be good, you have to be able to develop a rapport both with the kids and with parents,” he says. “You have to explain to a parent about what to do for the child and give a lot of guidance on things to watch for.”

One technique that he developed is when he enters a room to find a crying child, he will sit as far away from the parent and child as possible and talk calmly with the parent.

“So as opposed to going right into it and pulling this kid out of the mom’s lap and riling the child up, I sit there calmly and start talking about why the parent has brought the child in,” he says. “Over time, over a few minutes as there’s this calm conversation and I’m not near the child, the child is able to calm down and trust me.”

Dr. Brennan offered similar words in advocating a patient approach when dealing with kids. “Personally, what I’ll often do is I don’t go right away and examine the child or interact with them. I kind of sit down (and) feel out the situation,” she says. “A lot of my exam is just what is that child doing when I’m talking to the parent. Are they awake, are they asleep, are they looking and playing or are they miserable and laying and not moving?”

Sue and Glenn Meisner, owners of Bandi Reign party planning services based in Princeton Junction, also have created custom-designed parties for clients in a variety of settings, from family homes to elegant commercial venues. Not only do they work with vendors to provide the very best in music, entertainment, and upscale party favors, they also tailor their menu selections to suit a wide audience.

“A lot of times, parents are invited to kid parties, too,” says Sue. “We’ll set up a buffet station for the kids to serve themselves while offering plated service for the parents. Our bands or DJs will use two playlists,” aimed at pleasing both divergent age groups. And while the junior set enjoys a festive punch, the adults can sip champagne.

Party favors for all are often placed on tables for everyone to enjoy during the celebration, while take-home treats, like high-end custom-decorated cookies in sparkly glass jars bearing the celebrant’s name, await departing guests on a decorated table by the door.

Sue has designed elegant orthodox bar mitzvahs, where “everything gets blessed by a rabbi… the tables, the food, even me,” she says. “I get blessed a lot,” she adds with a laugh.

On the flip side, she once hosted an elaborately themed “princess” party, where the birthday girl was dressed in garb suitable of nobility and, as per Her Majesty’s royal decree, Batman made a surprise appearance.

“That was a fun party,” says Sue, “a full make-believe fairy tale.”

THE SECRET PATH TO CAREER READINESS!By Andy Pritikin

ill your child be prepared for life after graduation? First, they will have to get a job. And while there may seem to be a job shortage out there, it’s actually being identified as a “skills mismatch.” This past August, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported

the youth unemployment rate (ages 15 to 24 seeking work) at 12.7 percent, the highest in the history of the statistic, yet there are 5 million unfilled jobs. Employers are calling it a talent shortage and a hiring crisis, and a few months ago, 32 of the 50 state governors cited “career readiness” as the top priority in their state.

It only makes sense that this is an issue. While most of us are formally educated for 15-plus years, a typical computer can learn all the facts we learned in high school and college in a matter of seconds. As technology eliminates some jobs, it does create others, and skills like cooperation, empathy and flexibility have now become increasingly vital in the modern-day workforce.

The “three R’s” are just so last century! According to new research by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the most jobs, and best paying jobs since 2000, require high social and communication skills. “The New York Times” points out that even at tech companies like Google, where it was assumed that technical expertise would determine the best managerial candidates, the

best managers proved to be those who made time for one-on-one meetings, helped colleagues work through problems, and took an interest in their lives — in other words, experts in social skills.

Business consultant Bruce Tulgan’s surveyed managers in his new book, “Bridging the Soft Skills Gap”, and below is what they (and most of my business owner friends) say about their new hires:

• “They just don’t know how to behave professionally.”• “They arrive late, leave early, dress inappropriately, and spend too much time on social media.”• “They know how to text but they don’t know how to write a memo.”• “They don’t know what to say and what not to say or how to behave in meetings.”• “They don’t know how to think, learn, or communicate without checking a device.”• “They don’t have enough respect for authority, and don’t know

the first thing about good citizenship, service or teamwork.”According to Tulgan, “Young people are hired for their hard

skills, and fired for their (lack of) soft skills.” Top students are entering the workforce lacking the most important skills that businesses are seeking, skills the Partnership for 21st Learning

(p21.org) calls the “four C’s” — Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Creativity. While our educational system slowly integrates non-cognitive/character/soft skills into the curriculum, there is a place where these attributes have been taught with great results for over 100 years: summer camp.

Camp is a place where test scores and the pressures of achievement that children are subjected to all school year are tossed out the window. Valuable life skills are learned within a structured yet relaxed social setting, outside in the beauty of nature, with supportive counselors guiding children to do the right thing. Camp is a place where being kind is celebrated, and where groups of campers working together are recognized for their creativity and teamwork. It’s a place where young people are challenged and encouraged to expand their comfort zones, try new experiences, meet new people, and discover talents and interests that they never knew they had.

More than 10 million lucky children attend summer camp in the U.S. each year, but millions more well-meaning families instead choose to allow their children to sit home and stare at screens for the national average of 7.5 hours per day (or more). In their defense, most of these parents never attended camp and experienced its benefits first hand, so they do not necessarily value the experience. In an effort to enlighten the uninitiated, many of the best American Camp Association Camps have been measuring outcomes of their campers and their camp families, to share hard data of their success. At Liberty Lake Day Camp, we measure our “5 Star Points” — Independence, Teamwork, Integrity, Aspiration and Friendship Skills — and have seen significant increases in these attributes across the board, according to both the children and their parents.

Camps like Liberty Lake also get to see firsthand how the camp experience translates to the workforce, as half of our staff is comprised of former campers. We are also told constantly by adults how their camp experiences helped make them the successful person they are today.

So while the workforce diversifies to match the ever changing needs of the 21st Century, summer camp continues to play a vital role in youth (and workforce) development: nurturing creativity, judgment, teamwork and all the things that employers are seeking, and computers will never be programmed to do!

Andy Pritikin is the President of the American Camp Association, NY/NJ, as well as the Owner/Director of Liberty Lake Day Camp in Mansfield Township, NJ. Andy speaks as an expert in Summer Camp and Youth Development throughout the country, as well as recently in China as the keynote speaker at the first ever Chinese Camp Education Conference.www.ACANYNJ.org, www.LibertyLakeDayCamp.com

“Camp is a place where being kind is celebrated, and where groups of campers working together are recognized for

their creativity and teamwork.”

Older campers learn about Bee Keeping.

Hundreds of campers and staff join together to form a giant heart during Unity Day last summer.

very child outgrows his or her bedroom, and there comes a time to upgrade to a teen room. Before you start tearing down the SpongeBob wall clings and

stripping off the Barbie sheets, have a plan in place for a smooth transition.

For the Hermann family of Lawrenceville, it became time to upgrade once their son, Alex, now 12, literally outgrew his room.

“When (Alex) was 7 we put up an amazing loft bed in his room that friends of ours were passing on from their son. Alex is tall for his age and by age 11 he was waking up and hitting his head on the ceiling most mornings,” Alex’s mom Janie Hermann says. “Our house was built in the 1950s and has lower ceilings than most. Since the loft bed included a desk beneath it we decided to get new furniture and do a total update while we were at it, especially since he was entering middle school in the fall.”

Interior decorator Courtney Cachet, whose company is based in Summit and has done work in the Princeton area, says it’s important to plan an update to a child’s room, and getting your child involved makes it even easier, especially when it comes to getting rid of old toys.

“Sit down with your child and go through everything. As painstaking as this may sound, it’s really the best way for everyone to move forward,” Ms. Cachet says. “There are emotional attachments to a few things, that’s OK. But, explaining to your son or daughter that they never play with their American Girls and/or the truckload of Legos and someone else will, makes a lot of sense and is much more effective than tossing it all while they’re at school.”

Updating your child’s roomMake the transition from kid’s room to

teen’s room a smooth one

The Hermann family of Lawrenceville recently updated the roomof their son, Alex.

By Donna Adinolfe

The Hermanns surprised Alex with his room update, which they accomplished during the two weeks he was away at camp.

“We know what he likes in general,” Jamie Hermann says. “Our idea was to create something that, with minor updates, would take him through high school. Getting a good-quality bed was key. We know he is going to be tall and would have liked to have gotten him a queen bed, but, due to the size of the room ended up going with a full. This was not an area where we skimped, so we went straight to Mrs. G (Route 1, Lawrenceville) as we knew we could count on a good quality at the best price.”

Revamping a kid’s room to a teen room can be done as a weekend project, says Ms. Cachet, who adds, the key is planning.

“First, you want to eliminate items that scream ‘little kid,’ for example, toys, some stuffed animals, etc. After that, reassess the room and what needs to be done. Is the paint color OK? Maybe the light pink is cute but feels too young. You can always paint one accent wall a more grown-up color to add a more mature touch like navy blue. Changing out bedding, an area rug and wall decor will usually do the trick.”

Janie and her husband, Ed Hermann, planned their project for about two weeks and everything was set to arrive the day after Alex left for camp.

“We cleared out and did a deep clean of the room and gave his old furniture away to HomeFront,” Mrs. Hermann said. “We also made his closet more efficient and added drawers, etc. We did all the work ourselves in the evenings after work and on the weekends. The furniture was the type that needed to be assembled and that took some effort. We also hunted for just the right accents that would suit his tastes.”

Something as small as changing the color scheme can make a big difference, Ms. Cachet says.

“Boys usually like richer hues and always seem to gravitate towards team colors such as blues, reds, orange,” she says. “Girls have a larger palette nowadays. Pink with orange is chic. Green and white is chic with a preppy nod.”

Alex not only got a new bed, but also a desk, and night stand along with a headboard all in a dark charcoal color with brushed nickel and wood accents.

“For fun, we added a bungee chair and then added a great ceiling fan (something he was wanting and could not have with the loft bed) as well as new bedding and an area rug in nice bright colors to add pop to the gray,” Mrs. Hermann says. “We also put up some new posters and added a giant chalkboard element made from vinyl and some other vinyl elements. We added a matching lamp, a marquee letter “A” and some pillows.”

The Hermanns did keep a couple of old things in Alex’s room, because they know he treasures them.

“One element of Alex’s room that we did when he turned 7, that he insists he will never change, is the custom shelves his dad made for him,” Mrs. Hermann says. “We bought some inexpensive skateboards, took off the wheels, added L brackets and made three shelves to hang up. We then turned the wheels into a hanging system for his hoodies on his door.”

Another thing is a SpongeBob SquarePants poster.“Boys at 12 are really wanting to grow up on the one hand, while

still holding on a bit longer to childhood.” Mrs. Hermann says. “It is a fun time as a parent. We loved doing this project as a surprise for him and he was beyond shocked when he came home.”

athers and sons attend ballgames together. Mothers and daughters go out for a day of manicures and clothes shopping.

It’s nice, necessary bonding time and fun for all involved. There is, however, an inverse element to the parent-child

relationship that is equally important.Let’s call it the “crossover date” in which dad spends one-on-

one time with his daughter and mom schedules the same with her son. There are several benefits to these interactions, perhaps none more important than giving the child a solid foundation for relating to the opposite sex in later years.

Jill Barnett Kaufman, a licensed clinical social worker and founder of the Princeton Counseling and Parenting Center, has

been lecturing, teaching parenting classes and providing area counseling for two decades. The mother of three boys ages 15 to 22, Ms. Kaufman feels one-on-one time is important with every child in the family, and strongly encourages mother-son/father-daughter time.

“A strong relationship with the opposite gender of parent correlates to good relationships in their romantic future,” Ms. Kaufman says. “If you have a good relationship with a daughter and father, that would translate into good relationships with your future spouse or boyfriends and girlfriends. It is important, you’re developing the connections that are similar to connections that you are going to have when you want a future romantic relationship.”

Mother-son and father-daughter time is important for kids, and parents

Not just in romance, but everyday life as well. People who are uncomfortable with the opposite sex may be cheating themselves out of fruitful platonic relationships, therefore limiting their chances of nurturing increased friendships or solid professional associations.

Ms. Kaufman feels the crossover bonding should begin at birth. Carrying it out, though, may be a challenge as time goes on.

Sometimes it is easy. Mom could be a sports fan and enjoy taking her son to a hockey game. Dad may be a chef and be happy to show his little girl how to advance beyond an Easy Bake Oven.

That’s not always the case, of course. “If you don’t have a lot of things in common you have to go

above and beyond to find a connection,” Ms. Kaufman says. “I have three boys, and I play video games much more than I’ve wanted to, because I wanted to mix with my boys. What I recommend parents to do is find what children are interested in and try to develop an interest that way. That’s really where the child will be open to connecting with you.”

Sometimes, however, the opposite-gender time gets lost in the shuffle due to uncommon interests. Schools often help out with father-daughter dances and mother-son events, but that does not provide true one-on-one time.

If it’s a strain to find common ground, Ms. Kaufman recommends several activities that can be universally enjoyed. They include going out to eat or just having ice cream together. Volunteer for an animal shelter, go to the movies or see a show. Exercise, shopping and trips to the beach are all fun and free of

gender shackles. If the child is reluctant to go out in public with their parent,

schedule a one-on-one evening at home with popcorn, Buffalo wings and a DVD. Or take a trip to visit the grandparents, which most kids usually enjoy, but “make sure the other spouse is not there.”

“Just don’t get discouraged if your child doesn’t seem interested in doing something with you,” Ms. Kaufman said. “Keep trying and brainstorming new ideas. It will be worth it in the end.”

The key is mixing communication with activity, and Ms. Kaufman feels that a big key to communicating is striking up a good conversation in the car because both parties are looking straight ahead.

“When you’re sitting across from each other having a meal, it’s a little harder to have some of these conversations when looking them in eye,” she said. “That’s a little intimidating to a lot of children.”

If parents find themselves only spending time with children of their own sex, Ms. Kaufman feels they should suggest spending time with the other parent. The child will likely go along with that, since they respect the one they are spending time with.

The key is, don’t give up.“Keep at it,” Ms. Kaufman said. “Because kids definitely benefit

from it.” For more information on Jill Barnett Kaufman and her practice,
