2016 Examination and Graduation Guide
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
As we near the end of Term 3, the completion of the academic year is rapidly approaching for our senior students. Completing secondary education is a significant event in the lives of young people. There are no doubt mixed feelings with some looking forward to life after school with great excitement, while for others there is a sense of apprehension, as they prepare to leave the certainty of school life and embark on their future. Whatever the future holds for each of our graduates, we are confident that they have developed the necessary skills to successfully contribute to their community and to create their own future within it.
As the intensity of completing the academic requirements of each course culminates into final assessments and examinations, there are also a number of key events that we look forward to in order to celebrate the achievements of the class of 2016. This ‘Examination and Graduation Guide’ provides details associated with the dates, times and expectations for students and families during this busy time.
Some of the key dates include;
Wednesday 26 October – Year 12 Graduation Mass (7pm at Upper Level of Endeavour Homes Pavilion - Morphettville Racecourse)
Thursday 27 October (final day for Year 12 students) Text Book returns begin, and Locker clean out
Graduation Assembly (2pm) Year 12 student celebration in Walter Park (3:30pm) Year 12 Boarder’s Dinner (6pm)
Friday 25 November – last day to return Text Books, Library Books and Chromebooks
Saturday 3 December – Graduation Dinner (7pm), Adelaide Convention Centre (All Bookings are made online through Try Bookings from Monday 3 October to Wednesday 2 November) Enquiries to Kathryn Mortlock - [email protected] or 8350 2515.
The staff at Sacred Heart College look forward to celebrating the hard work and achievements of the Class of 2016 with students and their families over the coming weeks.
Wednesday 28 September
Testimonials
Year 12 students receive a certificate of reference from the College, called a Testimonial. Homeroom Teachers recently issued students with a (yellow) Testimonial Request Form, which provides the details that are required to write the reference. A Testimonial cannot be prepared unless this form is returned to the student’s Homeroom teacher well before the Graduation Dinner.
The (yellow) Testimonial Request form must be returned to the Homeroom Teacher by the end of Homeroom on Friday 30 September as the preparation of Testimonials is a time consuming process.
Term 3 Holidays and Holiday Workshops
Term 3 Holidays are not ‘holidays’ for Year 12 students. Students are invited to attend any of the scheduled Holiday Work-Back sessions or Holiday Practice Exams. In addition, the Library will be open at certain times.
Students who are not attending school will be finishing major studies, assignments, completing note preparation for exams and undertaking revision. It is advisable that students organise a study timetable for the holidays, so that they study for all subjects, and make the most of this valuable time.

Monday 17 October
Year 12 students will return to school Monday 17 October, and will have nine days of formal lessons remaining! This short, but valuable time will be spent completing course-work and assessment tasks, while also preparing for final examinations. Students should also discuss how they can contact subject teachers during Swot Vac.
Wednesday 26 October
Year 12 Graduation Mass
Time: 6.30 for 7.00pm
Venue: Endeavour Homes Pavilion (Upper Level) - Morphettville Racecourse
Families are asked to arrive from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start. From the perspective of the College this is the key graduation event for the class of
2016. This is a formal occasion that must be reflected in behaviour and dress. Student dress code is the College Winter Uniform. Students need to ensure that
uniforms are immaculate and shoes are polished. Hair and personal attire must be
tidy and in keeping with College expectations. Failure to meet these expectations will result in students not participating in the Graduation Mass. Some key elements re uniform expectations at the Graduation Mass are:
Boys must be clean shaven; Hair must be clean, neat and tidy. Tied up and back, and off the face. Any
makeup should be with only a very light Foundation, if any at all; Full College winter uniform including blazer, but no College jumper and
absolutely no Year 12 Hoodie. All students are expected to attend and families are also encouraged to be part of this
memorable event. Further, students are expected to sit with their families. We ask students and families to remember that we are in a sacred space and therefore
need to show reverence. It would be inappropriate for our students and families to speak loudly during this ceremony or clap and cheer during the presentation ceremony.
Tea and coffee will be available at the conclusion of the Mass.
Thursday 27 October
Graduation Assembly (Quad) – followed by the Year 12 Student Celebration in Walter Park and later, Year 12 Boarder’s Dinner
Final Day for Stage 2 Classes (Full College Winter Uniform required)
In some schools there is the potential for the last few days of classes to be hindered by inappropriate, unruly and sometimes dangerous behaviour. That is not the culture at Sacred Heart College! It is important that our Year 12 students at all times recognise their role as leaders of the community and conduct themselves accordingly. Our Sacred Heart students are expected to conclude their classes respectfully and with dignity. Like any other school day, unruly behaviour will not be tolerated.
Thursday 27 October is the final day for Stage 2 classes. Year 12 students are required to be at school at 8.45am, with the lesson order being adjusted to ensure the Year 12 Study Line falls after lunch, not before Recess as normal on this day as follows:
8.45am Homeroom 9am Lesson 1 (Line 2 - brown) 10.20am RECESS 10.40am Lesson 2 (Line 1 - yellow) 12.05pm Lesson 3 (Line 3 - red) 1.25pm LUNCH 1.50pm Homeroom (collect chairs) 2pm Graduation Assembly
Lunch will be shortened and will be followed by a full school Assembly to celebrate the academic achievements of the 2016 graduating students. Year 12 students should be in full College (Winter) uniform of ties, trousers and blazer for boys and skirts, ties and blazer for girls. There will also be a formal handover of leadership to the newly elected leaders for 2017. The families of students to be recognised at this Assembly will receive a formal invitation to attend in due course.
Celebration in Walter Park
Immediately following the Graduation Assembly, Year 12 students will be ushered to Walter Park for a celebratory function. Students will be able to collect and wear their Year 12 T-shirts and Year 12 Photos after which light refreshments will be on offer. Students will be seated together in Walter Park while parents (who attended the Graduation Assembly) gather in the Parlour for refreshments.
Entertainment will be supplied in the form of vetted and appropriate concert items from students and staff. Students must register their items with the Organising Committee one week before the event. Care should be taken to ensure that the items are tastefully humorous without being personal ‘put-downs’ of anyone in the school community. Items not registered with the Organising Committee will not be allowed to be staged. The cost of the Celebration in Walter Park is covered by the College.
T-Shirts/Year 12 Photographs
The Year 12 Photograph (Cost $25) and the Year 12 T-Shirt (Cost $15) are additional mementos offered to students for purchase. These items will be charged to your school account, and will be available for collection on Thursday 27 October at the conclusion of the Graduation Assembly. Please note the Year 12 T-shirt is not part of the school uniform and consequently is not to be worn when on campus at other times (apart from the Celebration in Walter Park).
School Uniform requirements after 27 October
Students are expected to wear the school uniform at all times when they return to school whether for exams, to submit work, to see teachers or for any other reason. Students who are not in uniform will be asked to return when they have changed.
Clearance Procedures
In order to receive their Testimonial, students need to return all Library, Chromebook and Book Hire items well before the Graduation Dinner. The final day for return of these items is Friday 25 November. The onus is on all Year 12 students to attend to this task.
Lockers
All students are expected to empty their lockers of all contents. Any personal items that remain in lockers after 27 October will be discarded.
Any textbooks that are not required for revision purposes must be returned at this time. Students should continue to return textbooks when no longer needed.
Year 12 Boarders Dinner
Boarding Families please note the Year 12 Boarders Dinner details:
Year 12 Boarder’s Dinner at 6:00pm
(Boarding students are required to wear full winter uniform)
Venue: The Bay Function Centre
Address: Gliderol Stadium, Brighton Rd, Glenelg East, SA 5045.
Further details will be distributed via the Boarding House.
Friday 28 October – Sunday 6 November
SWOTVAC (Study Days)
Stage 2 teachers will be available by arrangement to assist students during regular Stage 2 lesson times.
Stage 2 teachers are also available by arrangement to assist students with course completion. Students are encouraged to contact teachers for assistance if required.
When visiting the College, students must be in summer uniform (no hoodies) and sign in and out at the Front Office.
Revision should be well under way prior to this period and as such, consolidation of knowledge is now the main focus.
During SWOTVAC students should establish a consistent sleep pattern, they should eat well, schedule in some personal recreation time, and cut back hours worked in part time jobs. These are important ingredients to combine with an effective study plan.

More Information - Stage 2 External Examinations
All Stage 2 externally assessed examinations (apart from oral examinations and nationally assessed languages) will be coordinated by Mrs Karen Bailey (Director of Teaching and Learning) and supervised by experienced exam invigilators at the Senior School campus.
Students are required to wear full and correct summer uniform (hoodies are NOT permitted). Usual standards relating to jewellery, makeup, hair, grooming and shoes apply. Students who are not in proper uniform may be sent home.
Students with externally assessed exams will receive an examination attendance slip, which shows the exam rules and lists the examination dates and times. This slip must be brought to every examination. Students will also receive an examination timetable listing the locations of their exams. Exams will be held in Champagnat Hall, unless otherwise stated on the timetable. Students must check dates, times and locations carefully and ensure that they arrive early.
Students will be required to enter the exam room 15 minutes prior to the published start time. There are a number of administrative tasks that must be undertaken before the exam starts. Please be aware that there is also a seating arrangement.
The externally assessed exams cannot be rescheduled. It is therefore essential that Mrs Karen Bailey is contacted if any unforeseen circumstances arise prior to the exam on 8294 2988.
e.g. Students who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam or ill on the day of an exam or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:
ensure you have spoken to Karen Bailey BEFORE the exam commences
the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell Students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use their
moderated predicted exam mark by seeing Mrs Bailey at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks. Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell, still do better than their predicted mark!
Students requiring special provisions for long term conditions should have already submitted an application to the SACE Board. Please contact Mrs Karen Bailey ASAP if this has yet to occur.
For subjects that permit graphics calculators: the memory will be reset (except for Mathematics subjects). Students are permitted to bring 2 calculators. Removable covers and instruction booklets are not permitted. Students must ensure their graphics calculator is on the list of approved models. Please note the Casio fx-9860GII is definitely NOT an approved model and will be confiscated if brought to an exam. Students have been alerted to this fact several times this year.
Approved calculators: Press Control Click here
Students are permitted to bring a dictionary, as long as it is on the list of approved dictionaries. Supervisors have the authority to check all dictionaries prior to the commencement of the exam.
Approved dictionaries: Press Control Click here
The following general rules also apply:
No pencil cases will be admitted. Stationery must be in a clear plastic bag/sleeve.
All paper for exams will be supplied. Students are not permitted to have in their possession any notes, blank paper or unauthorised material containing information relevant to the exam. The only exception is for Mathematical Studies, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics where two unfolded A4 sheets of handwritten notes (not photocopied) are permitted. For Mathematical Applications and Information Technology, only one A4 sheet is permitted (unfolded, handwritten, and not photocopied). Students are permitted to write on both sides of the A4 sheet(s). It is NOT acceptable to laminate notes.
Each examination has 10-minutes reading time. Students must not write in, mark, or highlight in any way, the script books or question booklets, nor use a calculator during this time, but they may write on the coloured scribble paper provided. In addition to reading the paper, students should also use this time to check that the question
booklet is complete (i.e. all of the questions are there, no blank pages etc.). Students will be allowed the full period scheduled for the examination after the reading time.
Students are advised that mobile phones, smart watches or other electronic devices must not be brought into exam room. Mobile phones must be switched off and left securely in the student’s bag or elsewhere. The College takes no responsibility for mobile phones.
Students requiring assistance (e.g. extra writing paper) or a toilet break should remain seated, raise their hand and wait until an invigilator speaks with them. Under no circumstance should students leave their seat without permission.
Students are not permitted to communicate with other students throughout the duration of the exam.
Students must not be guilty of any breach of good order or proprietary (i.e. do not distract others in any way).
Students are not permitted to borrow equipment from other students during the exam.
Students need to use their own judgment to answer questions they are uncertain about. Invigilators are not permitted to give any direction with regard to the exam paper. However, if there is faulty printing on the page, students should alert the invigilator immediately.
Students are required to remain in the Exam Room until the conclusion of the exam. Students are not permitted to leave early.
At the end of the exam, students are required to remain seated and silent until all papers have been collected and they are formally dismissed.
The expectation is that students will only be present at the College during scheduled exams times. If students are on site at other times, they must register their arrival at the Front Office. Students must be dressed in full and correct summer uniform (no hoodies) when on College grounds.
Friday 25 November (or prior)

School Leavers Guides
All Year 12 students have been given two hard copies of various School Leavers Guides distributed through their homeroom and sponsored by Government initiatives. These publications have a range of information about study, work and other options available to SA student school leavers. Spare copies are also available from the Careers Office.
Please also keep checking student emails for any late breaking information through the swot vac and examination period.
Bonus Points
The South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) administers two bonus points schemes based on rules provided by its member universities. The two schemes are the Universities Equity Scheme and the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme.
The Universities Equity Scheme awards 5 bonus points for eligible students, and the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme awards 2 or 4 points for eligible students. An individual student can receive a maximum of 9 bonus points under both schemes.
Any bonuses will be added to the university aggregate from which selection ranks are calculated. The selection rank will then be the ATAR which corresponds to the revised aggregate.
Selection ranks adjusted for bonus points do not appear on the Tertiary Entrance Statement (TES) issued to SACE/NTCET students because they are only specific to SA/NT courses/programs.
Universities Equity Scheme
The University's Equity Scheme will provide bonuses in two ways: bonuses for all students in certain specified schools and bonuses for individuals in other schools. Eligible students will receive five bonus points in the calculation of their selection ranks.
The Scheme will apply to all courses offered by Flinders University, the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Charles Darwin University and Tabor Adelaide.
Individual bonuses
Students in other schools will be able to make an application under the Scheme to demonstrate their individual disadvantage. Students will be eligible under the Scheme where, in the year they gain their ATAR:
they or their parents are in receipt of a Centrelink means-tested income support payment, or
they are the holders of a Health Care Card, or
they are the holder of a School Card. Details of students who receive an individual equity bonus will be stored by SATAC so that they can receive their equity bonus in future applications (while they are still eligible to apply on the basis of their year 12 studies).
Application for individual bonuses
Students can apply for consideration under the University's Equity Scheme when completing their 2016 Undergraduate application from the SATAC website. Applications for the Scheme will not be available from the universities’ websites.
Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme
The Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme encourages students to strengthen their preparation for undergraduate studies by undertaking a language other than English, or specified English and Mathematics subjects.
The Scheme will apply to all courses offered by Flinders University, the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Charles Darwin University and Tabor Adelaide except:
Charles Darwin University
114831 Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine
Flinders University
214941 Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine
The University of Adelaide
314552 Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery
324491 Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)
In this Scheme, students will be awarded two points, up to a total maximum of four points, for successfully completing a subject in any one of these four categories:
20 credits of a LOTE in the Languages Learning Area (not including the subject Language and Culture – two 10 credit Australian Indigenous language subjects can be paired in lieu of a 20 credit LOTE)
2END20 English Studies or 2ECS20 English Communications
2MDS20 Mathematical Studies
2MSC20 Specialist Mathematics.
Successful completion is defined as gaining an Overall Grade of C- or better. Because the Scheme is designed to encourage enrolments in these subjects rather than reward outcomes, no higher bonuses will be granted for higher achievement.

Conclusion
The class of 2016 deserve to be congratulated on the excellent work they have completed throughout this year and it is with great excitement that we prepare for key end-of-year celebrations. Our senior students are in their final stages of schooling and we encourage them to maintain their focus in the coming weeks.
Throughout the year all Year 12 students have been frequently reminded that they are the role-models of the College. As such, their conduct over the final weeks should remain of the highest standard.
It is important that students manage their departure from the school in a dignified and memorable way. This time should be spent recognising the value of other people whose companionship has been enjoyed over recent years. It can be an enjoyable time for all and whilst it is understandable that it is a time to celebrate the completion of secondary schooling, it is not an occasion to resort to the consumption of alcohol or other drugs, criticism of school personnel, disregard for school property or damage to the reputation of Sacred Heart College in the community.
We ask both parents and students to work co-operatively with teachers in trying to meet the aforementioned expectations.
We wish our Year 12 students every success in their future endeavours. We are confident that as graduates of Sacred Heart College, they are well equipped to achieve the successes they aspire to. They should be very proud of the young adults they have become and we are absolutely certain they will add great value to our local and broader community.
