    Rebuilding the

Early Street Community Garden17 Early Street Morristown

Once a littered and vacant lot, the Early Street Community

Garden will soon provide 94 families of all ages and backgrounds

with the ability to grow their own food. Once complete, it will be

a model of sustainability for community gardens nationwide.

So far we have raised just over

$100,000, and here are some examples

of what we’ve accomplished so far:

    Graded the property

    Installed 2 rain gardens

    Built a solar-powered pavilion

    Built 94 garden beds

    Installed an interior fence

    Created a rainwater collection system

    Established a walking path

Here are examples of what we could

    do with your help:

    Install a garden patio

Create a walkway through the garden Build boardwalk over rain garden

    Purchase soil and compost

    Build a community shed

    Set up water spigots

    Install picnic tables

    Build a green street

    Hold an endowment for maintenance

the Morris School District, as well as area colleges and local

    community members.

This one-acre property creates opportunities for children and adults

    Myra,

Remember that March day in 2009when the three of us went for a driveand pulled up in front of an empty loton Early Street? This is the perfect placefor a community garden, we thought, then ‘…but we don’t even know whoowns it….it is in a redevelopmentzone….’. You said, ‘Hey, why not use itfor now?’ You got the owner to say ‘Sure’, and the neighbor to say,‘I’ll get you free water’ and Grow It Green Morristown was born!

That first clean up day in April, we were hoping a few folks wouldshow up and help. Over 30 came. The first night we startedbuilding beds, 10 folks showed up to help, most we did not evenknow. Of course there was the snow, the flooding, and other smallsetbacks. It was not always fun, but it was always exciting. Thatgarden has flourished into a true community.

That same sunny March day we drove over to the lot behind theLafayette Learning Center. Sam suggested putting in an educationalgarden for the whole school district. Carolle laughed until you

    said, yes!

At our first meeting with the School District we asked for the wholefield, and they declined, said they needed it for the soccer games.Sam and Carolle were ready to leave, and you said… ‘What aboutthis parcel by the tennis court…’ Well, here we are, the largestpublic school garden in the state, and growing! And all this isbecause of your dream for a community garden for Morristown.

We thank you, Myra, for being a vital part of our incredible journey.

Your Co-founders, Samantha Rothman and Carolle Huber
