Mao Ze Dung Mao Ze Dung was the leader of communist China, he begun the revolution that took over from Chang Kai Shek. He lead what was known as a peoples revolution. He took part in something known as ‘The Long March’ which was him and his troops marching through the mountains of China to escape Chang Kai-Shek’s troops. During this time his soldiers stopped and stayed with farmers and the common people of China. For this reason, he gathered a lot of support among the Chinese people and the average farmers.Once in power his communist ideas did little to help China, and meant that there was a great deal of starvation and economic crises.

Chang Kai-Shek Chang Kai-Shek was the ruler of china from 1911 onwards. He brought in a form of Western government, as pictured, in his French style uniform. He brought more of a democratic approach to China than had existed before. For this reason he was hated by the Communists, who believed that everyone should work for the common good. For this reason Chang Kai-Shek was seen as a hated enemy of the communists, for his love of western culture. He was also a respected general who was known for his control over the military.

Women

In China back then the father would decide what a woman in China would be.

A prized woman was pale (which showed that they did not work in the sun), and had small bound feet that also showed that they were rich and privileged and not workers.

One Child PolicyThe one child policy is a part of a family planning policy. They did this because the population was too high. In October 29th 2015, they changed thte law to two children.

Now you can have as many children as you want.

Confucianism

The Chinese follow the spiritual teaching of Confucianism. Confucianism was a philosopher he proposed a theory known as filial

piety, which means love and respect for your family. Part of this theory means that you venerate (worship) your ancestors, the people who died within your family before you were born.

This means that most Confucian homes have an area where there are portraits of family members who are no longer alive, the family will light incense and leave out food offerings for their past away ancestors.

Table Manners

Your only allowed to start eating once the host comes. Chopsticks are never allowed to be left sitting in a bowl, because this

looks like ‘joss sticks’ which are incense that is lit for ancestors (people who have died) therefore it is bad luck to put chopsticks up in this way.

It is considered very rude to point your chopsticks at anyone for a similar reason.

Death Traditions

It is a tradition to burn incense in front of photos of dead ancestors. The idea is similar to the film ‘Mulan’ where she often asks her ancestors

for advice, the concept is that history repeats itself and that your ancestors can provide advice to you when you are in need.
