Recent Engineering Design Project

Ore Test Drop Tower

CDMS were commissioned to design an Ore Test Drop Tower by a local

testing company to meet their specific design parameters.

The work required engineering innovation in order to minimise ore handling

time and provide a safe design for personnel protection. The turnkey system

was fully automated between ore load in to ore load out, minimising operator

input and increasing throughput.

CDMS completed all design work from concept to detail, including civil,

structural and mechanical design, tender documentation and calling of

tenders for work packages. The mechanical design comprised the major

portion of the work where the fully automated process required intelligent use

of standard mechanical components to minimise special items and eliminate

expensive robotics.

The system was engineered to be robust and reliable with repeatability being

the key design criteria.


Recent Engineering Design Project

CEMENT BATCH PLANT EXTENSION

CDMS Consulting Engineers was contracted to design an extension to an

existing cement batching plant located at the MCM facility in Midland.

CDMS had previously designed cement silos and steel structures for MCM

so was selected to design an extension to the existing cement batching

plant facility.

The design of the new 140T batch plant was started at concept phase and

developed right through to detailed design for fabrication. CDMS supplied

the client with an economical and reliable solution to suit the client’s

physical space limitations and their budget.

The new batch plant design was required to minimise cement handling time

and provide a safe structural design for personnel protection. The turn-key

cement batching system proposed by CDMS was to be fully automated,

minimising operator input and increasing throughput.


Recent Structural Design Project

Design of Prevention of Falls Upgrades

CDMS were commissioned by Forge to perform the structural

engineering for the Design of Prevention of Falls Upgrades on

Wells, Towers & Tanks for Water Corporation throughout Western

Australia. These included:

• 91 dry well wastewater pumping stations (16 types)

• Design and detailing of Prevention of Falls Upgrades on 160

dry well wastewater pumping stations (54 types)

• Design and detailing of Prevention of Falls Upgrades on 34 dry

well wastewater pumping stations, 53 elevated tanks and 5

dam intake towers

Prevention of Falls Upgrades included:

• Installation of new ladder climbing systems and supporting

steelwork designed to AS 1891.4

• Installation of new Webforge guard-railing and self-closing

gates to AS 1657

• Installation of new rescue systems for wet wells to AS 1891.4

Existing structures were analysed to determine whether POF loads

could be resisted.

Recent Specialist Service Project

True Triaxial Stress Cell

CDMS Consulting Engineers were commissioned to design a True

Triaxial Stress Cell (TTSC) from concept right through to detailed

design for fabrication.

The design parameters required CDMS to design a triaxial test rig

capable of simulating geosequestration, or carbon capture and

storage (CCS), on large interchangeable rock samples at

pressures up to 70MPa.

The scope of work included:

• Design of external pressure envelope

• Design of internal triaxial stress cell

• Detailed fabrication and machine shop drawings of

mechanical components


Recent Specialist Service Project

Carbon Reactivation Kiln

CDMS were consulted to investigate the design of a carbon reactivation kiln that

was exhibiting severe cracking over a brief operating period. Carbon reactivation

kilns are used for catalyst recycling in mining processes.

The work required analysis of the current design to establish if the arrangement

was causing the fatigue damage or if it was primarily a result of process

conditions.

The analysis conducted by CDMS specifically included detailed static and

combined stress analysis of the retort assembly. Linear and non-linear thermal

heat transfer calculations and associated thermal stress analysis for fatigue

damage assessment were included.

Analysis results were reviewed to draw conclusions as to existing design flaws

and recommendations made to remedy the design with minimal wastage and

down time. The new design recommendations were validated through numerical

analysis by CDMS to relevant industry codes and standards.
