The 2016 Biosolids and Source Management conference will examine key developments across these two critical areas of the water industry and drive discussion, debates and collaboration. This is an opportunity for specialists from both areas to come together and tackle some of their most pressing challenges, learn from innovative solutions and take away clear steps for improvement in their organisations. Biosolids and Source Management: 30 years of experience: where to from here? After 30 years of experience, the Biosolids industry has really come of age in Australia. This year’s conference offers us a tremendous opportunity to pause, reassess where the industry is at, look at the journey we have taken and examine the lessons learned. These discussions and reflections will help us define where we go from here, examine predicted trends and create an industry fit to support Australia’s society and its sustainability agenda. Source Management – changing practice in changing communities The increasing cost of water and wastewater treatment has been putting pressure on source management practices for many years. In order to stay on top of these challenges and respond to emergent trends in contaminants, as well as the changing needs of customers, innovation, collaboration and sharing of best practice remains of paramount importance to the source management community. Waste reuse initiatives, which once may have seemed impossible are benefiting from innovations and a changing regulatory environment to enter into the market and make their mark on cost recovery, sustainability and effective contemporary source management. More and more, examples of collaboration between the Biosolids and Source Management sectors are generating positive outcomes in terms of cost recovery, energy generation and product quality. But challenges remain, and new ones emerge. This conference offers the opportunity for you to discuss these challenges, learn from innovative solutions and take away clear steps for improvement in their organisations.

Who should attend? Topics, projects and technologies showcased at this conference will provide valuable insights and opportunities for networking and collaboration for the following audiences:

- Biosolids professionals - Source management/Trade waste professionals - Government agencies (local, state and federal) - Wastewater treatment engineers - Environmental scientists and researchers - Soil scientists and agronomists - Manufacturers and distributors - Academics and lecturers - Students and researchers - Community members - Consultants/Contractors operating in these fields - Trade Waste and Biosolids Regulators

Note from the Chair

Paul Davodelsky – Australian & New Zealand Biosolids Partnership Chair I’m really excited to see this biennial event return to Melbourne in November. This is the foremost opportunity for our industry to come together and explore cutting edge technologies, build our professional networks and share lessons learned from our experiences.

This year’s program showcases work coming out of industry-leading projects that offer the potential to change the way we think about our work, and ensure we are not inhibited by the status quo. This will be furthered in our two workshops, the first debating how we can more

pro-actively tackle the risks posed by emergent contaminants and pathogen, and the second exploring how we can drive forward public education to change perceptions and behaviour.

I invite you to take your place in these discussions and debates, and help shape the future of our industries in innovative ways that support safety, sustainability and public support.

Innovation Pitch Sessions

New to the 2016 Biosolids and Source Management Conference is the inclusion of innovation pitch sessions. These are opportunities for delegates and exhibitors to pitch in five minutes how they would solve a problem, answer a question or provide their take on one of the below questions. This is an amazing opportunity to have a platform to discuss your perspectives on pressing issues for the industries and to hear from your fellow colleagues.

Simply click on this link to check out the question options and to register yourself to pitch your perspectives, research findings or industry experience in this field. If you would like to pitch about an alternative topic, please email Kiri Goschnick via [email protected] to pose a question you would like to pitch an answer to.

Workshops WORKSHOP 1 - Protecting Human and Environmental Health in a Rapidly Changing World - Hosted by the Australia New Zealand Biosolids Partnership In an ever changing world, our sectors must always try to stay one step ahead of the game, responding to new risks as rapidly as possible, preferably before they have even been realised. Emerging contaminants and pathogens by their very nature are hard to predict, regulate and mitigate. Finding out where they are entering the system, understanding what happens to them along the way, and identifying what impact they have on health, environment and quality outcomes are huge challenges which require a proactive industry underpinned by facilitative regulation. In this workshop we will discuss how regulators, utilities, councils and other key players in the biosolids and source management industries can adopt more progressive approaches which offer timely insight, facilitate effective decision making and ultimately help protect our environments and communities from the risks posed by emerging contaminants and pathogens. Drawing on diverse perspectives, we will consider whether it is possible to achieve regulation of emergent contaminants and pathogens in the absence of extensive data and we will explore how utilities and councils respond rapidly and proportionately to poorly understood risks. WORKSHOP 2 - Marketing the Unmarketable – creating behaviour and attitude change amongst our communities In our industry, ‘out of sight out of mind’ is often the status quo amongst our customers. What they chose to send down our pipe network can have a huge impact upon the performance of assets, the quality of our waste water products, and more often than not can cause a few raised eyebrows and more than a few headaches for our WWTW staff! It’s our responsibility to ensure that our customers have a strong understanding of their impact on our systems and how to play their part in ensuring the waste water network can keep on flowing. Be it wet wipes or plastics, fats and grease, we should strive to instigate long-lasting behaviour change that contributes to Australia’s water security. This workshop will examine customer engagement and behaviour change approaches which seek to place Australians at the top of the global leader board in waste water ethics. We will hear from Sydney Water on their experience of achieving success with their ‘Keep Wipes out of the Pipes’ campaign; examining the marketing approaches that worked best for them and gaining insight into the critical success factors that can help make your campaigns successful. The Australian Water Association and ANZBP will share relevant research insights from the Australian Water Survey and the ANZBP Community Attitudinal Survey, and you will have the opportunity to help direct future lines of enquiry that the Association can take forward in 2017, offering a hugely valuable data set open for the sector to draw upon.
