Dear Friends,

We are so proud to share this report of the work of your land trust!

Over the past year we took ownership of four truly outstanding properties and acquired conservation easements on many more — 3,879 acres in all, encompassing farm and forest land, trails and natural areas. These are places of tremendous community value, places for Upper Valley residents to celebrate, love and rely on.

It’s taken hard work, generosity and good thinking from lots of people to put together the capital needed to proactively pursue these high impact, high stakes conservation projects. This year, hundreds of people have contributed to fundraising campaigns for the places we’ve conserved and turned out for hikes, snowshoe trips, educational programs, and community celebrations. Thank you all!

As this report goes to press, UVLT will be marking important milestones: its 30th anniversary and the conservation of its 50,000th acre. We’ve dramatically expanded the conservation areas we own and the stewardship, educational and recreational programs we offer. We’re building strong partnerships with area schools, businesses and non profits so that the benefits of our beautiful, productive, vibrant landscape are available to all who live in our region.

Among the 2,000 land trusts nationwide, UVLT stands out for its remarkable accomplishments: 490 parcels conserved, nearly 50,000 acres. What’s even more significant is how we’ve done it and what we can do going forward. What we will do.

UVLT brings a practical, personal, commonsense approach that is unique and special. We’re a small group with a big reach and a strong sense of service. We’re neighbors finding solutions together. The Upper Valley is both a place in our hearts and a place on this planet. It’s all connected. And that’s why we’re so excited about the future of land conservation here.

LETTER FROM PRESIDENT/CHAIR

Jeanie McIntyre, President Chris Nesbitt, Chair, Board of Trustees

SOLUTIONS FOR SPECIAL PLACESBrookmead Conservation Area, NorwichUVLT bought 352 acres with beautiful hayfields and pastures, upland forest, numerous vernal pools and trail connections that link popular hiking and running routes. This purchase marks the beginning of an innovative partnership with Vermont Technical College, which had received the land by a gift of Andrew Sigler. Our purchase provided funding for the school to relocate its dairy program to Norwich using the farm buildings they own next door. Their cows graze our pastures. Their milk supplies an on-

site cheese lab. UVLT has installed a parking area and trailhead kiosk. We’ve been running field trips and land stewardship training sessions there.

Revels Field, Lyme This 14-acre field is a scenic landmark, stretching down a high hillside. It is a great place to see a first glimpse of mountains to the east and north when gathering to hike up the Lyme Pinnacle from Highbridge and Hardscrabble Roads. The apple trees and stones are relics of our region’s once thriving hill farms. Indeed the site was once the location of Lyme’s largest farm, now long gone. When the parcel came up for sale, Manning Rountree and Kendall Hoyt bought it and conserved it, filling a gap in otherwise conserved land along Highbridge Road — a Scenic Town Road.

Wood Farm and Cider Mill, Weathersfield Willis and Tina Wood donated a conservation easement protecting the 150-acre farm where they make cider and jelly, raise lamb and produce maple syrup. The Wood family has cared for this land, and it has supported them, through eight generations. Wood’s Cider produces anywhere from 6 to 32 tons of cider jelly and boiled cider and from 10,000 to 52,000 gallons of cider annually depending on the quality of the apples in a given year, using the farm’s cider press from 1882. The products of their 133-year-old business are on the shelves of local stores and shipped around

the world. It was important to Willis and Tina that the farm remain intact for the future. Willis explained, “I’m the sixth generation. My daughter and grandchildren live across the street. So, I’m hopeful that more generations will carry on. But if it doesn’t work for them to continue on the farm I would still like the farm to continue as an entity.”

Hartford Norwich Greenway Corridor Three donated conservation easements expanded a greenway corridor begun more than 20 years ago. The Norwich-Hartford Neighborhood Greenway Project has focused on connecting and expanding conserved land in the Bragg Hill/Jericho section of the two towns, within the viewshed of the Appalachian Trail and local connector trails. John and Judy Wiggin have conserved 60 wooded acres that rise beyond the southern peak

of Griggs Mountain, a place where John Wiggin’s family has a long history. Marion McCollom Hampton purchased and protected 48 acres of forest and streams in the southwestern corner of Norwich, adjacent to 152 acres of farm and forestland that she conserved in 1998. Liz Russell bought and conserved a 12-acre parcel that had been slated for development adjacent to her Cossingham Farm property. In all, over 1,200 acres and 23 properties have been conserved in the greenway area.

Smith Pond Shaker Forest UVLT successfully took on an exciting and ambitious effort to buy 995 acres on the slopes and saddle of Shaker Mountain, long a priority of conservation groups and public agencies. This land connects two large parcels owned by NH Fish and Game to create one contiguous forest block of over 5,000 acres, the centerpiece of which is 63-acre Smith Pond. Our acquisition enables long-term stewardship and restoration of important forest resources; it protects the undeveloped shoreline of a spectacularly scenic pond and provides

public access to this special place; it safeguards streams and wetlands draining into the Mascoma River; it preserves historic and archeological resources associated with the Enfield Shaker Village. The $1.5 million purchase price was supported in part by the NH Department of Environmental Services and the NH Land and Community Heritage Investment Program and many local contributors. Fundraising is ongoing.

Ompompanoosuc River, West Fairlee Heavy flood events in the recent past have highlighted the need for enhancing and protecting natural patterns of flow and flooding in our region’s rivers. A conservation initiative in West Fairlee conserved 2 miles of high priority river and stream frontage. Using a grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, UVLT purchased river corridor protection easements on two adjacent farms. Owners Paul Modern and Laurie

Hildebrandt of Odd Dog Farm, and Doug Dresser of Dresser Farm, also protected uplands of field and forest outside of the river corridor, bringing the total protected area to over 129 acres. Enthusiastic support and guidance was provided by the West Fairlee Conservation Commission and the West Fairlee Planning Commission. Additional funding came from the Upper Connecticut River Mitigation and Enhancement Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

Hardy Brook Preserve, Lebanon Protecting ecosystems and water quality are goals of the Lebanon Conservation Commission which conserved an 8-acre parcel it had acquired after a major storm event demonstrated the importance of the land as open space and the potential risks of development. Much of the property has steep slopes and well-drained soils. Water moves very quickly through this land to Hardy Hill Brook, a Mascoma River tributary. Wetlands associated with Hardy Hill Brook are noted as “Very High Value” by the Lebanon

Natural Resources Inventory. River otter, a species indicative of higher quality riverine environments, uses this section of Hardy Hill Brook.

West Windsor Town Forest UVLT completed its largest conservation easement to date — covering nearly 1,600 acres on the slopes of Mount Ascutney in West Windsor. The transaction was led by the Trust for Public Land with the Town of West Windsor and many partners and funders. The easement links together and protects an ecological hotspot, a significant trail network, a public drinking water source serving 750 people and the prominent backdrop of the village of Brownsville. The Town purchased 468

acres of ski slopes and forest formerly belonging to Ascutney Mountain Resort and added those to the existing 1,112-acre Town Forest. The conservation easement is co-held by the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board.

SOLUTIONS FOR SPECIAL PLACESMountain View Farm, Orford With the Orford Conservation Commission, UVLT purchased 149 acres of farm fields nestled among forested hills and frontage on undeveloped Mason Pond and its outlet stream flowing into Jacob’s Brook. This land was once owned by Billy Brown, the last resident of Orford’s historic Quinttown area, until the late 1960’s. Two thirds of the parcel acreage were classified as the highest ranked habitat in the state according to the 2010 NH Wildlife Action Plan. These meadows provide high quality

rare grassland habitat surrounded by vast, unfragmented upland forests. Under UVLT’s ownership, the property will continue to serve as a critical resource in the region, providing opportunities for conservation and stewardship education, and allowing the public to walk and ski the trails, fish in the pond, and simply enjoy the splendor of this remote and wild area of Orford.

Hidden Valley Orchard, Tunbridge In 1964, Herbert and Mary Ellen “Mel” Goertz went to pick apples in Tunbridge and ended up buying an old orchard. Fifty-two years later, they donated a conservation easement to conserve the place they fell in love with — 100 acres of forest and farmland, and heirloom apples. Located on a height of land near the border between Tunbridge and Strafford, the land includes open fields, streams and woods with dense clusters of yellow lady’s slipper orchids. Also there are hundreds of old apple trees in orchard

rows set out almost a century ago. The Goertz land is part of an unfragmented forested block which provides important habitat not far from Taylor Valley and the Kibling Hill Wildlife Management Area.

Rix Ledges, Lebanon A long-running four-way partnership involving UVLT, the NH Wetlands Bureau, the Lebanon Conservation Commission and Norwich Partners, developers of a hotel and business park, culminated in the protection of one of the City’s most significant ecological areas, when UVLT took title to 223 acres in June. Though close to the Route 120 corridor, this land is rough and wild, a place of ledges and boulders and wetlands, where there are bobcat and bears. The Rix Ledges land was beloved by two

late conservation champions — Nicole Cormen and John Joline. It adjoins three smaller parcels previously acquired by UVLT.

STEWARDSHIP FOR LAND AND PEOPLEConservation Areas In fiscal year 2016, we acquired four more properties for long-term ownership bringing our Conservation Areas to a total of fourteen, including high elevation forest, grassland habitat, agricultural land, wetlands and frontage on ponds and streams. Our goal is to ensure that all Upper Valley residents can enjoy the benefits of conserved land and participate in its stewardship. We improved trails at Zebedee Wetland and Lyme Hill, created a parking area at Brookmead Conservation Area, restored habitat by

removing invasive plants at Rix Ledges and led winter expeditions to Smith Pond and Snow Mountain. We added 4 acres to our ownership at Zebedee Wetland to protect sensitive resources and create a safer trail route there. Six local businesses supported our activities through employee service days.

Trails and Campsites With more than 45 trails and natural areas to visit, UVLT has conserved something for everybody — these places include quiet walks, spectacular vistas, opportunities for birding, trail running, or tracking. In fiscal year 2016, we added a trail easement protecting a popular path near the village in Norwich and extending the Rosemary Reiser Trail. Throughout the year our staff led end-to-end hikes that link our Conservation Areas and showcase our region’s unfragmented forest, remote ponds and wetlands, and landscapes of historic

significance. Our eight campsites on the Connecticut River anchor the mid-section of the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail which is now growing south and north.

Land for Learning The lands we conserve provide infinite learning opportunities, both formal and informal. At the West Windsor Town Forest, Dartmouth College students are working with us to develop protocols for volunteers to monitor ecological integrity and recreational uses in the same natural system. At Brookmead Conservation Area we led a forest walk to kick off a multi-year study of deer browse and invasive plants. Our Lyme Hill Conservation Area was the site for two ILEAD workshops on natural landscapes. Dartmouth biologist Ryan

Kalsbeek uses our land for population surveys of snakes and adult frogs. Second and third graders visited our Zebedee Wetland weekly, observing and writing about their experiences in journals. Ohana Camp uses our Ely Mountain Conservation Area for its edible wild plants programs, and scouting groups and summer camps from all over the northeast visit our campsites on the Connecticut River.

Easement StewardshipWith more than 480 conservation easements entrusted to us, property visits and landowner assistance are a big part of our commitment to permanence. We inspect all properties at least annually, supported by a group of trained volunteers. In fiscal year 2016, volunteers contributed more than 1600 hours of service. UVLT staff meets with prospective owners when land changes hands. We provide referrals for landowners seeking land management guidance,

and work with colleagues to develop field skills and mutual support among both volunteers and landowners. In fiscal year 2016 we resolved an encroachment issue and an instance of non-compliance to restore a riverfront buffer.

Susan Renaud, Treasurer

Dear Friends,

The financial position of the Upper Valley Land Trust reflects the significant achievements of our organization during the year ending June 30, 2016. With three new acquisitions, land held for long-term conservation ownership increased $2.1 million. The purchase of the Smith Pond Shaker Forest was arranged in three installment payments; as of June 30, our associated debt was $1 million to be paid in fiscal year 2017 and 2018. Grants have been awarded for that project bringing our remaining fundraising goal to under $400,000.

Also during fiscal year 2016, UVLT received a gift of land for resale, a building lot in Jamaica VT, and made the final payment on an installment purchase of a conservation easement on Alswell Farm, in Hanover Center.

We received over $1.4 million in restricted gifts and grants, and released $825,000 as we completed the transactions and fulfilled the conditions of restricted gifts. Over all, UVLT’s Net Assets increased by just over $1 million.

Once again, staff did an excellent job achieving revenue goals and managing expenses to stay within our $987,731 Operating Budget. We welcomed 222 new contributing members who made unrestricted gifts to support our work.

STRATEGIC FOCUS• Productive farmland: supporting and promoting local food

and opportunities for those who grow it.

• Unfragmented forest and natural habitat: supporting the working forest economy and connecting the places plants and animals need to adapt and thrive.

• Stream corridors, shoreline of rivers and ponds, wetlands and floodplains: protecting clean water and resilient ecosystems.

• Places to learn and play: establishing access to natural areas, parks and trails for all Upper Valley residents.

• Local partnerships: helping communities protect landmarks and create new assets as they change and grow.
