Rochester Hills Public Library Hits 2 Million Checkouts in 2015

(ROCHESTER HILLS- Jan. 11, 2016) Rochester Hills Public Library had more than two million checkouts in 2015. That’s up 9.6 percent from the previous year and an all-time high for the library’s 92-year history. The in-crease is credited in part to a new feature in the library’s automation system that automatically renews borrowed materials for the items allotted renewal time.

“This has been a very popular feature with library users, they get to keep their items without having to person-ally renew or the worry about late fees,” said Christine Lind Hage, director of the Rochester Hills Public Library.

Even though materials are being checked out for longer periods of time, patrons who want the materials haven’t experienced longer waits. That’s because the library’s new handling equipment has greatly improved the turn-around time for materials.

This news was covered by several media outlets, including :

• Head of Circulation Ginger Olson says the new Automated Materials Handler has greatly improved the turnaround time for materials. Before the new system the average turnaround was 24-48 hours. The system has also increased staff productivity and efficiency.

The Rochester Post and The Patch.

• The Teen Advisory Board began its second year of service. They started a volunteer project last fall where they meet one-on-one with senior citizens at the library to show them how to use laptops, smartphones and tablets. From September to February they helped more than 20 happy seniors.

• The Teen Area was rearranged to be more user friendly.

• The Geek Club, a teen group, continued to grow, offering a supportive, safe environment for teens.

• OverDrive, our primary source for ebooks and eaudio, brought their Digital Bookmobile (now retired) for a day of hands on help. They had two people on board to show off the various services and assist with getting the OverDrive app onto devices. Despite stormy weather we had a good turnout.

• The Blue Bus, a traveling library that visits childcare centers, added two childcare centers plus a Great Start classroom.

• Oakland Talking Book Services, the livrary for those with low to no vision, grew nearly 6 percent over 2015.

• Librarians offered 414 one-on-one appointments with patrons to teach them all about eResources.

• Adult Services began offering a popular adult coloring club. The program continues to grow in 2016.

Volunteers

• The Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library raised approximately $197,000 in 2015. With their support, the library was able to fund programs for children and adults, the construction of the new Book Sale Room on the second floor, printing costs, computer equipment and aquarium maintenance.

• Circulation volunteers for the 2015 year completed 2,700 hours of volunteer time. That’s equivalent to 337 eight hour days.

• The volunteers clean all the AV materials, check for missing pieces, empty the bins on the material han-dler machine. They help us with MeLCat orders by pulling our items via a paging slip, putting labeling on the MeLCat items that are being sent to other libraries, emptying the bins when Rides delivers our MeLCat items each day.

• Volunteers also help the Friends of the Rochester Library by helping bring in large donations when patrons drop them off at the loading dock or even go out with patrons and bring them in from their cars. Several of our special services volunteers clean inside and outside of library items, put the items in alphabetical order, and discard items under the direction of a librarian.

Public Support

Comments are always welcome and we receive hundreds throughout the year. Here is one that really stood out:

I frequently attend the Sunday afternoon concerts. Last Sunday’s performance was beyond a doubt “The Best”. I want to thank you for having her at RHPL. Of all the concerts that RHPL contracted in the past-- Thornetta Davis was the first to move the audience as she did. It was refreshing to see people of all ages stand up and participate while she was performing. Encore!
