2 2016 FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

May 2017

Dear Brothers, Parents and Friends of Phi Delta Theta:

It is with deep appreciation and gratitude that I present the 2016 Annual Report to you, the supporters of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. The momentum you created through your financial support gained strength in 2016. We are moving forward at an unprecedented rate.

Here are some key results from your generosity that have made Phi Delt stronger:

Φ A 6.8% increase in number of undergraduates who attended in-person leadership development conferences. Φ Honors College of Leadership welcomed 50 Whole Man Scholars. Φ An 11% increase in educational grants to the Fraternity from the Foundation which gave the Fraternity more

resources with which to grow chapter support. Φ $214,227 awarded in scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate members. Φ Phi Delta Theta Foundation assets ranked #4 of all fraternities.

As you read through the following pages, know that this was accomplished through the $854,000 given to the Phi Delt Fund, a 14% growth in our endowment (from $15 million in 2015 to $17.1 million by December 31, 2016), and an increase in both the Trustees Roundtable and Living Bond Society.

We will continue to use Phi Delt 2020 as the “North Star” that guides the long-term growth of the Fraternity. Your generosity is what helps us realize the specifics of the plan that will define Phi Delta Theta as the premier Fraternity in North America. In 2017 we will keep our momentum strong by embarking on raising the final $900,000 of the Building on the Bond campaign and growing the Phi Delt Fund to $1 million through the One Man Is No Man campaign.

I hope you will join us.

Thank you, once again, for your generosity. Because of you, the Bond is strong and the future is bright.

Yours in the Bond,

Robert A. BiggsPresident

"I get more joy out of giving than receiving. I enjoy seeing the results of giving. I am deeply committed to bringing out the best in people, and to giving everyone—and everything—a fighting chance. This is my way of paying it forward for the opportunities I was given by my Phi Delta Theta brothers.”— Tom Van Dyke, Kansas ’60

ALL DONORS

It is only appropriate that Harold “Knap” Knapheide, Kansas ’67, is a member of the Phi Delta Theta Kansas Alpha chapter, as the Knapheide family business and the Fraternity were both founded in 1848. Knapheide has played a crucial role as a donor to the Fraternity as well as practicing the overall qualities of a Phi Delt to this day. Knapheide is a Trustee of the Kansas University Endowment demonstrating a clear understanding not only for giving back, but the importance of the relationship between a strong national fraternity and the local chapter.

"I had a fantastic experience as an undergraduate. Today, I feel like I’m getting something back for my gifts to the Foundation: the enthusiasm and excitement of working directly with chapter members, seeing what they are made of and watching them get excited when they execute well. My reason for giving is so that others could have what I had.”—Bruce Clayton, Colgate ’89

PLANNED GIFT“The role of developing leaders is very, very important. Young brothers need to know someone is there as a mentor to help them navigate and not lose their momentum. Being an alumnus requires commitment—to the local chapter, to volunteering, to giving. It’s the right thing to do.”—Don Schenk, McDaniel ’71

THREE CHAPTERS REACH 100% PARTICIPATIONUndergraduate giving boldly moved forward in 2016 by raising $43,082 in support of the Phi Delt Fund. This was accomplished through matching gifts from Brother Philip Bartels, Cornell ’71, Brother John Scovell, Texas Tech ’68, Brother Phillip Cobb, Ohio State ’66, and the gifts from 893 undergraduates.

Three chapters achieved 100% participation: North Dakota Alpha (North Dakota), Missouri Iota (Lindenwood), and Nova Scotia Alpha (Dalhousie). We are especially proud of all Knights of Pallas donors who, at a time when their own resources are limited, gave generously. Thank you.

KNIGHTS OF PALLAS

“Competitiveness aside, as a membership we decided to donate to Knights of Pallas because our donation is helping our fellow brothers across North America…What separates Knights of Pallas from [other Greek philanthropies] is the knowledge that those on the receiving end are individuals who have accepted the Bond and have chosen to live their lives based on the same values system contained within. Though separated by distance, through our ritual and pledges to one another we feel close to our brothers who we may never meet, and that inspires us to contribute to their successes.”—Ryan Chapman, Idaho ’16

KNIGHTS OF PALLAS

“The chapter knew it was something we wanted to partake in as a group…Colorado Gamma is the recipient of a Whole Man Scholarship and we send a minimum of four members to Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute. Knowing that our donations went to programming for these events and scholarships made it an easy sell. We can help give Phis across the country the opportunity to become their greatest version of themselves.” —Charlie Hushek, Colorado State ’16

“We made it a goal to be the first Canadian chapter to reach 100% participation. We came together, donated our money, and sent it off as quickly as possible. Members gave because of the way the Foundation supports the growth of the Fraternity, and it was a great way to get members working together for a common goal.”—Dalton Schamehorn, Alberta ’16

“It was a cause we all stood behind. Part of being a member of a fraternity is seeing the big picture. Obviously one of the biggest parts of being in a fraternity is the local friendships and environment, but it wouldn’t be possible without a national base. The Foundation helps with scholarships and programs for us all. From Phikeia to alumni, we all benefit from the growth of Phi Delta Theta and support of its programs.” —Alex Motro, Utah ’18

The Phi Delta Theta Foundation exists to strengthen men for life by building on the tradition of our core values: friendship, sound learning and rectitude. It started

with scholarships, and now today, a whole lot more! Phi Delta Theta is extremely grateful to those who believe in its mission through their generous donations to the Foundation. The support received is helping Phi Delta Theta achieve its Phi Delt 2020 vision of becoming the premiere fraternal leadership organization in North America.

Help us, help our members become the greatest version of themselves.
