Board of Trustees Letter to Members

Dear Members and Friends:

These are truly exciting times at the Oregon Historical Society! Over the past six years, we have seen increased attendance, hosted more exhibits and programs than ever before, and witnessed growing community support for our work.

In 2016, visitors flocked to see exhibitions on the history of Portland’s Chinatown, “Baseball’s Magna Carta,” and Oregon’s comic artists. Our education program expanded with the opening of our new permanent exhibit for youth, History Hub. The Oregon Historical Quarterly continued its more than a century long tradition of publishing compelling scholarship on our state’s rich history, while our research library digitized photographs and manuscripts to make our collections more accessible. However, one of the most exciting highlights of 2016 was the renewal of the Multnomah County levy with a “yes” vote of 71%!

The support we have received from our members and the public for these and many other projects make this the right time for OHS to launch the FORWARD! Campaign, consisting of four important goals:

• Redesign our permanent Oregon My Oregon exhibition to present a broader perspective on Oregon’s vast history,

• Renovate our world-class research library to create an inspiring and productive space for historical research and preservation work,

• Launch a “Digital Vault” which will help preserve our collections and provide broad access to our library archives to millions of people, and

• Build endowments that will secure our accomplishments into the future.

We invite all of you to join this important campaign, which will ensure that Oregonians always have access to history that enriches our lives and informs our decisions. Thank you for your continued support and for helping put the power of history into everyone’s hands.

In 2016, OHS began a collaboration with Oregon State University to make more than 40 years of photographs, manuscripts, publications, correspondence, and other materials created by William Finley, Irene Finley, and Herman Bohlman available online. The project, “Reuniting Finley and Bohlman,” is funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library.

Creating a Future for Oregon’s PastIn 2016, OHS launched the “silent phase” of its first capital campaign in over a decade.

A Year In Review

In 2016, OHS hosted a series of exhibitions including Beyond the

Gate: A Tale of Portland’s Historic Chinatowns, Comic City, USA, Democracy’s Blueprints: The Documents that Built America, and Baseball’s Magna Carta: Setting the Rules of America’s Game.

For its 116th year, the Oregon

Historical Quarterly published original scholarship on topics including the fiftieth anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, Chinookan villages of the Lower Columbia, the Malheur occupation, and a special issue based on the 2015 symposium on regulating birth in Oregon.

OHS celebrated a successful levy campaign in May, with 71% of Multnomah County voters saying YES for Oregon History!

A Year In Review

The 2016 History Makers Dinner honored photojournalist David Hume Kennerly, Nike founder Phil Knight, marine ecologist Dr. Jane Lubchenco, and Hoffman Construction. Over 250 people gathered at Montgomery Park, making history by raising an unprecedented $335,000 to support OHS!

Public programs in 2016 included a Lunar New Year Dragon Dance and Parade (attended by over 1,000 Portlanders) and a Chinese American Speaker Series that brought historians to libraries and historical societies across Oregon!

The OHS Research Library hosted a series of genealogy workshops, presented slide programs on the Columbia River Highway and Portland gardens, and began digitizing the Oregon Journal collections thanks to funding by the Jackson Foundation!

In November, the opening of a new permanent exhibition for youth, History

Hub, allowed OHS to expand its capacity for school tours!
