“THE GREATEST SCIENTISTS ARE ARTISTS AS WELL.”

What is it about the ocean that is so captivating? The Our Oceans exhibit pairs our fascination by the deep with
design and science education for creative, expressive experiences. An OMSI-built exhibit, it includes a 3-D mapping sandbox, a meditative art gallery curated with assistance from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and Pacific Northwest College of Art, and a “talk-back” area that invites visitors to draw responses to environmental questions.
Why combine art with science education? Art and design create access points to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning for everyone.

What better month to celebrate girls’ love of science? Designing Our World empowers girls’ pursuit of engineering
careers by bringing altruism and collaboration to the forefront of design challenges. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the program was developed side-by-side with girl-focused community organizations like Girls Inc. and Adelante Mujeres.
Making a better world will be at the core of our upcoming Turbine Hall transformation, motivating visitors of diverse backgrounds to design, make, and test sustainable solutions to real-world problems.

-FIFTH GRADE STUDENT UPON VISITING THE COASTAL DISCOVERY CENTER AT CAMP GRAY
SUN MON TUE WED THU FRI SATMARCH 2017
Remember the first time you saw the ocean? We feel lucky to have watched thousands of children experience
the ocean during our first year at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon—not to mention introducing them to coastal ecosystems, squid dissections, outdoor skills, and bunkhouse friends!
As the largest museum-based outdoor education program in the country, we know that exploring the great outdoors builds confidence and supports a lifetime of stewardship grounded in scientific discovery.

From community-based organizations who help us reach underserved populations, to industry leaders who
introduce students to growing career pathways, partnerships are crucial to our work. Living Cully, for instance, works with us to develop afterschool curriculum that prepares students to address personal and societal challenges.
Whether it is through our Science Communications Fellowship or an industry expert at one of our 60 Science Pubs, our partners support and inspire audiences across the state.
Have a partnership idea? We want to hear from you. [email protected]

Not your run-of-the-mill afterschool club, the Teen Science Alliance is a team of science-loving teens who
find creative solutions to day-to-day challenges with mentors from companies like Nike and Guardian Games.
We are amazed at what we see when these teens work together! We have been inspired as teams prototyped inventions from a handbag with an interior light to a wristband that vibrates when the wearer falls asleep. What will they come up with next?

Summer is for playing, and when children play, they learn! Childhood play is ripe with scientific thinking—
testing, evaluating, failing, and trying again—and our onsite educators and engaging early childhood spaces nurture children’s creativity, critical thinking, and resiliency: the building blocks of lifelong learning.
We are expanding programs for young learners and sharing science-based resources with parents to empower them as their child’s first teacher.

SUN MON TUE WED THU FRI SATJULY 2017
The average student only spends seven minutes outside every day, but there’s nothing average about
our students!
“I’m going home and teaching my brother some things I learned,” explained Corbin after hobnobbing with Rojo the Therapy Lama in our “Pet Education Training School” summer class.
Donors like you support OMSI’s financial aid, helping us distribute nearly $220,000 in aid last year to ensure that, regardless of where they live or their families’ incomes, all students have the chance to build robots, hike Three Sisters Wilderness, and make lifelong memories.

Space exploration emboldens us to think big, to take risks, and to push our boundaries. Universally appealing,
it is an exciting entry point to many scientific fields and careers.
100,000 visitors each year journey through space in OMSI’s planetarium, and our Portable Planetarium takes that experience to communities across the region. Be on the lookout for more space science programs than ever before!

6th Annual Portland Mini Maker Faire
SEPTEMBER 2017
Each fall we celebrate the Portland Mini Maker Faire, a two-day showcase of invention and resourcefulness.
The Maker Movement, a tech-infused DIY community that spans the globe, has started conversations about how creativity, design, and innovation can be a part of our daily lives and bring new minds, new tools, and new jobs to our region.
As we watch drones fly overhead, homemade R2D2s entertain crowds, and families create their own LED art, we’re looking forward to our plans to transform OMSI’s central Maker hub, the Turbine Hall, into a place that will empower visitors to design, build, and tackle problems we face every day.

OMSI’s Traveling Programs pack our best classes, labs, and stage shows into the back of a van and travel
across the state and throughout the Pacific Northwest to complement the work being done in classrooms.
Each year, three OMSI educators teach classes and do assemblies at a community-wide science festival in Crane, Oregon—a rural community that is home to the state’s only public boarding school. Our educators introduce students and families to technologies they don’t typically have access to, and each year we are amazed at how the students apply their lessons to solve day-to-day farm challenges.

DIANE BOLY, Boly Welch, J.C. Stevens Legacy Society Member
I support OMSI because it gives so much back to the community. It is a place where my children, grandchildren, and, hopefully, great-grandchild will go to learn and be inspired. I made a bequest to OMSI in my estate plan because I have 11 grandchildren and this gift will be part of their legacy and a way for me to give something to them. It is not only for my kids, but for the whole community that has given so much to me and my business.
A committed businesswoman and community investor, Diane Boly once said, “OMSI is the place where my family spends time together learning and getting inspired.” OMSI is humbled to have Diane as a new member of the J.C. Stevens Legacy Society. Diane is the co-founder of the Portland recruitment and consulting firm Boly:Welch, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Valued friends, supporters, and science lovers:
What a year it has been! We celebrated the opening of the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray, introduced students to life in space with refreshed space science themes in summer and outreach programming, and welcomed our largest crowds yet to the Portland Mini Maker Faire.
Now, we are focused on the future, investing in our most popular spaces and programs—both in the museum and across the Pacific Northwest—to heighten the relevance and accessibility of science learning for 21st Century students.
We are looking inward at our own capacity, making traditional halls greater, serving our home state better, and viewing the stars differently. And we can’t do any of it without you.
Join us in celebrating our work and looking forward to another powerful year.
