GREAT EXPERIENCES

FORGE GREAT DOCTORSWe’re pleased to introduce our online Annual Report for the New England College of Optometry (NECO). We value your input and hope you will take the time to offer us feed-back and re-connect with our institution. Our success hinges on the dedication of our faculty and staff, the commitment of our Board, and the ongoing support of our alumni and corporate and community partners.

As will become evident throughout this report, NECO is on the move – we are stronger than ever, confident about our fu-ture, alert to our challenges, and resolute in our commitment to give optometry’s future leaders the confidence, knowledge, and critical reasoning skills to practice expertly and thrive in the rapidly evolving world of healthcare.

We believe experience matters. NECO’s location in the center of Boston’s medical community, combined with the most expansive clinical network in the country, creates the optimum environment for educating students about the vital role an optometrist plays as a member of patient-centered healthcare teams. This belief is reflected in our brand prom-ise: Great Experiences Forge Great Doctors.

Our students learn within a vast, clinical network that in-cludes hospitals, community health centers, schools, private practices, elder care sites, the Veterans Administration, a Mobile Van and NECO’s owned and operated clinics. This network was intentionally designed to prepare students of optometry for the complexities of professional practice by immersing them in diverse healthcare settings with patients from different backgrounds. Our students impact hundreds of lives during their time at NECO, reinforcing our belief that the best teachers are often the patients we serve.

Class Profile

CLASS OF 2020In August of 2016, New England College of Optometry welcomed the largest class in our 122-year history. The Class of 2020 is unique for more reasons than its illustrious year of graduation, which turns out to be very apropos given their choice of professions. Although they are a diverse group and come from different backgrounds, they share two common characteristics: they are all from the generation sometimes referred to as millenials, and more importantly, they are all seeking a career in optometry.

In general, competition for any optometry degree program is rigorous and NECO is no exception. In spite of the competitive nature of making application to optometry programs, NECO received more than 800 applications for the class of 2020. Our large class can be attributed to the fact NECO provides an early and diverse and intense clinical experience, is of relatively small size, is a single curriculum institution, and along with the Boston location, are all factors that make coming to NECO very attractive.

Every class has a personality, and the class of 2020 is no exception. Kristen Tobin, Director of Admissions acknowledged that the class of 2020 is highly motivated and academically prepared. She explains, “There is something very special about this class. Throughout the recruitment process, and during their first semester at NECO, I have found the Class of 2020 students to be extremely dedicated, friendly, humble and hard-working. As a whole they bring a sense of positive energy to the College and their passion for optometry and commitment to service is very evident.”

NECO students, and the class of 2020 in particular, have a strong humanitarian commitment. Many first year students have already signed on to work towards a VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) trip in their third year. Every year, 25 students accompany a faculty member, Bina Patel, OD, and other volunteer optometrists, to an underserved or third world country to provide eye and vision care as part of VOSH trip. To be eligible to go on a VOSH medical mission, NECO students accumulate a certain number of volunteer hours at the College and in the Boston community.

Student Spotlight

HANNAH YOON CLASS OF 2020

Hannah Yoon, a Boston College graduate, and a member of the class of 2020 personifies the type of student that is attracted to NECO. Although she spent four years in Chestnut Hill, she chose NECO for the attributes she heard about and witnessed during her interview. She sensed a spirit of compassion at NECO. As a first gener-ation immigrant from South Korea who immigrated to the US in 1998, she was the first in her family to have the opportunity to go to College in the US. She knew that optometry was the right career path for her and that NECO was where she wanted to pursue her dream. Hannah feels the sentiment of teamwork with her classmates.

“WE WORK TOGETHER AND ARE FLEXIBLE, YET GOAL DRIVEN. WE COLLABORATE IN SO MANY WAYS, ALWAYS LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER.”

- HANNAH YOON, CLASS OF 2020

Strategic Priorities

CLINICAL CAMPUSIn September 2015, the Board of Trustees approved New England College of Optometry’s 5-year strategic plan (2015-2020).

A key element of our Strategic Plan is the development of NECO’s Clinical Campus on Commonwealth Ave-nue in Boston. Our clinical campus will co-locate our student clinical training facility (the pre-clinic experience) with our Primary and Specialty Patient Clinics, NECO’s Optical Center, as well as Clinical Research focused on improving patients’ lives.

These interconnected activities will be united by our emphasis on stimulating innovation in teaching and learning - helping students make connections between discovery, integration and application to improve patient care; accentuating clinical experiences designed and appropriately timed to allow students to meld knowledge with patient impact; exposing students to new models in eye care delivery; and excellence in practice management.

New England College of Optometry’s longstanding tradition of serving the community is built into our mission: “Change the way people see the world through optometric education, discovery, and service.” The College is committed to providing leadership, innovation, and access to optometric care to the community. Care is delivered directly in our eye care centers and community health center as well as through our mobile vision clinic. Established in 2010, the mobile clinic travels throughout the state, delivering eye exams, eyeglasses, case management, and low vision rehabilitation services to children and adults directly on-site.

Profiles In Vision 2016 focused on the high impact of low vision services. The evening celebrated the contributions that New England College of Optometry has made in improving access to eye care throughout the Commonwealth, particularly in the area of low vision rehabilitation.

This year, NECO honored Janet LaBreck, who was nominated as Commissioner of Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) within the United States Depart-ment of Education, by President Barack Obama. Prior to that appointment, LaBreck served as the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, where she organized campaigns that increased access and opportunities for more than 30,000 legally blind Massachusetts residents. Connected to NECO since she was a patient as a child, Commissioner LaBreck is a champion of the College and its clinical outreach efforts. She discussed the tremendous impact that low vision technologies and services can have, noting, “These tools and strategies are used on a day-to-day basis to move people from diagnosis to independent, productive, and, most importantly, contributors to the community.”

Jim Hunt offered praise for the work that the College has done over the years in partnership with the Neighborhood Health Centers. Since the 1970s, the College has had a strong relationship with community health centers, been providing comprehensive eye care, including specialty care, at community health centers in the greater Boston area. Today, these clinical affiliations and community partnerships have expanded to include specialty low vision and vision rehabilitation services at Perkins School for the Blind and the Carroll Center, and to residents throughout Massachusetts through the services of our mobile clinic.

The next Profiles In Vision will take place in April, 2018, and will provide another opportunity for NECO to celebrate our commitment to the Boston Community and beyond though our ongoing efforts to improve access to eye and vision care.

Message from the President

CLIFFORD SCOTT, OD ‘68, MPH

It’s hard to believe, but when the Class of 2017’s tech-savvy, always-connected students first came to NECO, the words Über, gender-neutral, Fitbit, and…”Alexa” were not part of their vocabulary. The pace of technological, geopolitical, and social change has been accelerating at breakneck speed and looks to be on course to continuing accelerating throughout the rest of the decade. Many of the assumptions that we previously used to achieve success will become obsolete. In the health care field, value-based will be the watchword for all policy decisions, stimulating debate about balancing value for the patient, value to the provider, and value within the payment system.

Increased access to services through insurance will be counterbalanced by the need to rein in the costs of those services. Delegating responsibilities among professional providers will shift, as team-based care, collaborative communications, and the use of electronic medical records become routine.

Our current first-year students, the Class of 2020 (how cool is that?!) will be practicing in a health care environment that will measured by access, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness. Vision care will be a lot different than what I signed up for five decades ago and even from what is now considered ‘standard-of-care’.

Our students also learn differently than we did. NECO has become a leader in providing education in ways and at locations that meet the needs of this generation. On-demand recorded lectures, team-based projects, facilitated group discussions (including sessions with live patients), simulators for clinical skills demonstration and practice, and online business course simulations are already part of our educational repertoire to create learning opportunities beyond the classroom experience.

Our newly designed clinical campus at Commonwealth Ave. will co-locate all our clinically related activities, including primary patient care, optical dispensing, specialty patient care, electro-diagnostic and other specialized testing, simulation laboratories, clinical research, and clinical procedures training. We will also be piloting models of care that emphasize the use of technology while delegating objective tests and measurements and patient education to technical staff. The goal is to upgrade the doctor’s role to a more appropriate skill level of analysis, diagnosis, and developing management/treatment strategies.

It’s a brave new world – and we want to help shape it.

OUR LEADERSHIP

Message from the Chair, Board of Trustees

PETER (PANO) YERACARIS, MD, MPH

As pressure mounts to provide better access to high-quality, cost-effective health care, delivery systems in the US and Canada are undergoing major changes. This represents a profound challenge for organizations involved in education and training. Fortunately, excellence and innovation are two elements that characterize New England College of Optometry and we are well prepared as a college for the time ahead. Optometry will be an integral part of team-based care, the most promising model that is evolving. Payment incentives that encourage providers and patients to collaborate and communicate will help to identify and manage conditions in their early stages. As everyone eventually needs vision care, the eye exam will be a regular portal into the health care system.

In addition, many systemic conditions have ocular effects that can be indicators of severity or may in themselves cause impaired vision. Most community health centers include optometry as a basic service to assure that their patients receive full-scope primary care, including the prevention of avoidable vision loss. In the near future, the role of these providers will need to shift from independent practitioners to team members delivering timely and coordinated care. Each patient will have a unique network of a primary care physician, dentist, pharmacist, and optometrist, as well as other demographic- and condition- specific health providers.

NECO has a long history of educating its students in the principles of public health, not only through credited courses and team projects, but also as a theme interwoven into other courses in the curriculum. Its clinical system is unparalleled, immersing students in a wide variety of patient care environments and experiences, ranging from VA hospitals and clinics to community health centers and homeless shelters as well as in many types of private practice. The College’s graduates are well prepared to become successful in the health system of the next decade.

In helping to design optometric practice for the next decade, the College’s clinical leadership is working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and UMASS Medical School on analyzing our current practices and determining methods to increase our effectiveness. Our new flagship clinic, the New England College of Optometry Center for Eye Care – Commonwealth, is in its final design. When it opens later this year, it will not only provide state-of-the-art patient care and clinical education, but also will provide a testing platform for innovation in technology and delivery models. We are looking forward to adding this new dimension to NECO’s clinical assets.

AN INVESTMENT IN NECO’S FUTUREJoseph Feldberg, OD ‘521919 – 2011

“…this is my way (the scholarship fund) of returning some-thing to the school and the community that will live on after me.”

In June of 2016, New England College of Optome-try received the single largest donation of its 122-year history—a bequest from the estate of alumnus Joseph Feldberg, OD, Class of 1952. A member of the Foster Namias Legacy Society since its inception, it was the intention of Dr. Feldberg to give back to the institution that he held in such high regard and that prepared him well for years of successful practice. Dr. Feldberg explained, “I was so happy that I was an optometrist and very proud of it.”

Prior to enrolling in study at the Massachusetts College of Optometry (as it was known at the time), Feldberg received a BS in Zoology from the University of Arkansas, worked on a Master’s Degree at Long Island University, and attended Columbia for one year. He also completed a total of 14 years of military service through the college Air Force ROTC program and the Army Air Corps, achieving the rank of Major. While in the military he served as a bombardier/navigator, flying B-26s during the Solomon Islands campaign in World War II. He flew more than 25 combat missions.

Dr. Feldberg was not a stranger to hard work. He took jobs beginning at the age of 10 during the depression and he worked summers during his college years. Through the creation of the Feldberg Scholarship Fund, he has expressed an expectation that award recipients value the same work ethic he embodied by studying hard and achieving a notable grade point average.

After working in family and individual practice for more than 30 years, Dr. Feldberg retired at the age of 65, feeling that there was great reward in being able to give back after having been successful in his own optometry practices. Perhaps Dr. Feldberg’s philanthropy will inspire NECO alumni as well as future graduates to step forward and provide much-needed assistance to students eager to go forth in the community, serve, and become great optometrists.

The New England College of Optometry is grateful for the generous support and foresight of alumni such as Dr. Feldberg in creating endowed scholarship funds. These funds enable the College to attract the most promising students through the availability of tuition assistance dollars. Every dollar helps with the rising cost of education and the associated expenses of living in the bustling and cosmopolitan city of Boston. Consider the rewards of making your own gift today.

The Dr. Joseph and Judith Ann Feldberg Scholarship Fund will provide significant financial awards to deserv-ing students in their last three years of study at NECO. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of the Foster Namias Legacy Society or about creating an endowed NECO scholarship of your own to assist future optometrists in the pursuit of their studies, contact NECO’s Office of Institutional Advancement at 617.587.5585.
