A friend and supporter of Anouk Foundation recently told us: “It seems so self-evident that white
walls are spaces for stories and adventures” – and indeed, that is exactly what our artists aim at
through their colourful and cheerful murals.
2016 has been a productive year: we have been able to complete 14 projects in 6 different
countries thanks to the support and generosity of our donors. We worked for both children and
adults in paediatric wards, in nursing homes, and in specialised institutions. Each project was
adapted to the institution, pathology, and needs of the beneficiaries (patients, residents, families,
staff), and received positive feedback:
“The atmosphere in the Home has changed. The children’s worries, sorrows and traumas are still
there, but they have receded thanks to the Anouk artists who put all their hearts into their
paintings. Theses murals are more than just decorative; they have a genuine emotional and
enlivening influence.”
However, not only do we create therapeutic murals, but we also engage others in our mission to
humanise hospitals and specialised institutions. Through our Kids4Kids programme, we provide an
opportunity for children and adolescents to develop their creativity, team spirit and empathy as
part of their curriculum. Their artwork complements the Anouk murals and supports the well-
being of patients and residents. Over the last two years and as part of the Service in Action
programmes, we have been working with art teachers from the International School of Geneva
(Campus des Nations), and Collège du Léman. We have been so impressed by the students’
artwork that we decided to honour the students’ creativity and commitment by introducing the
first Anouk Awards.
We also had the opportunity to spread our vision through our Corporate Social Responsibility
Programme. We worked hand in hand with companies through corporate volunteering,
fundraising activities and corporate sponsorship.
We remain very grateful to the energetic team for their commitment with all projects. Our
deepest gratitude and admiration go to the artists for their talent, dedication and enthusiasm.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Our mission
Clinical environment in any type of healthcare centre can provoke fear and disarray among the patients
and residents. Our vision is a world in which illness, accidents and aging become a less traumatic and
fearful experience thanks to the institution’s reassuring and welcoming atmosphere.
We use music and art to improve healing and promote well-being, in institutions where children or
adults need to spend time away from home.
Our impact
Over 650 scientific publications and years of experience have shown that the environment has a huge
impact on patients’ recovery and wellbeing. Through our paintings we help to:
Our methodology
Our team of artists paint therapeutic murals based on the principles of art therapy in hospitals, special
needs institutions, orphanages, psychiatric centres and nursing homes. This improves the well-being of
the patients, residents, families and staff.
We always work in close collaboration with the staff of the chosen institution to create a project fully
adapted to their needs. The result is a tailored-made project achieved in a quick, efficient and cost-
effective manner.
Brighten and improve working conditions (reported by 100% of staff): a welcoming
environment has a positive influence on the treatment of patients and wellbeing of the staff
(their motivation is increased, there is less running and shouting).
Reduce anxiety (reported by 89% of patients, families and staff): a soothing atmosphere
brings comfort to patients and their families (patients are less agitated, children cry less).
Encourage interaction (reported by 96% of staff) and improve communication (reported
by 91% of families): caregivers use the murals as a storytelling tool to engage with the
patients, communicate, stimulate, orient, and explain any planned activities (children are
distracted during treatments, older patients are stimulated).

2016 PROJECTS
Activity room Dining room
We created therapeutic
murals in a ward where patients suffer from
severe emotional imbalances and show
sometimes extreme physical and verbal violence
towards others as well as towards themselves.
The objective was to guide the patients, to
regulate their behavioural disorders, to help
them develop and maintain their
achievements.
The artists drew inspiration from the sea, which
opened the confined walls of the unit and helps
the staff soothe the patients. Peaceful atmosphere in a corridor

The children want to see all of them!"

“The parents of little Giulietta, who was being prepared for a heart operation, came to thank me for the
mural of a gymnast we just finished in their daughter's bedroom. The little girl, 5 years old, was in hurry
to finish all the ‘medical stuff’, to go and visit all the murals, representing ‘the happy gymnast’s friends’.”

“Our children and their families greatly admire your work. According to staff, the number of children who need
anaesthesia before an MRI has decreased. The warm and cheerful atmosphere helps reduce the negative impact of
treatment. Parents feel more confident, less anxious, and work to reassure their child.
This has a very positive effect on the course of treatment.”

Since 2013 hospital staff has been using Anouk
murals in their everyday work in the Paediatric
consultation ward. This time the Paediatric
hospitalisation and neonatology ward asked us
to create murals to embark the children upon a
wonderful journey to distract them and create a
storytelling tool for parents and staff.
"The enhancement of the Paediatric hospitalisation ward that Anouk Foundation has done tries to make the
children’s stay in the ward more pleasant and reduces their levels of anxiety and distress.
These murals allow the child away from home to feel more comfortable in an unfamiliar setting,
which facilitates their recovery."

The artists created therapeutic murals in the
treatment rooms and the waiting room of the
surgical polyclinic, as well as simple and joyful
door signs for each room.
The medical staff chose jungle animals as the
main theme for the murals in order to soothe
patients and families as they go from the
waiting room to the treatment rooms. To
further distract children during treatments,
hidden images were drawn in the paintings for
children to find.Soothing atmosphere
“The children love to enter a giraffe or tiger room. When they are afraid, we can distract them with the characters on the walls. In the tiger room, for example, the tiger has a bandage around his head
- this soothes the children when they get a bandage themselves. Our doctors and nurses enjoy gaining the children's confidence and distracting the patients through the
paintings when the treatments are painful. For parents, it is a relief when they see that their child does not have to suffer so much. All of this makes it easier for us to work with both younger and older patients.”

The institution is both a place for learning and a
living environment for children aged 4-18 years
with mental or multiple disabilities.
In 2011, the institution called on us for the first
time to paint therapeutic murals in order to
make the atmosphere more welcoming and
reassuring. A second project was completed in
October 2014. The changes were so successful
that a new proposal was made for other living
areas.
Soothing atmosphere
SWIFT sponsored the project through Sibos, their annual banking and financial conference. In line with their
theme for Sibos 2016 Geneva, the artists worked onsite during Sibos week to produce a transformative fresco
for which attendees gave input. To help raise money for the project, the SWIFT stand featured a Wii-style digital
game. SWIFT created a documentary on the project:

Maison Sous-Balme is a home for children and
adolescents aged 4-15 years who are temporarily
removed from their familes’ care due to difficult
circumstances.
The interior lacked a welcoming atmosphere for
the children to feel more at home. Hence our
artists imagined fun, adventurous characters and
designed murals that tickle their imagination.
“The premises are more welcoming, prettier - less sad. The silhouette paintings are particularly appreciated
because they allow everyone to relate and project oneself into the pictures.”

“Pr. Tomaske came to us after we finished decorating her consulting room and told us that she never had an
easier time performing an X-ray scan on a child. Her little patient was so taken with the decorations that she
just had to tell him to look over his head and watch the little pig play bongos while he was lying on the table.
She asked him what he thought was happening, what the name of the instrument was, if he himself was
playing an instrument, etc. It gave her time to recalibrate the scanner without the child trying to get up. He was
completely into the story on the walls and simply forgot he was passing a medical exam.”

It was especially important in the imaging and diagnostics
ward, where the machinery is large and intimidating and there
are no windows, to create a welcoming and soothing
environment.
For example, X-ray procedures can take between 5 to 45
minutes – a warm and cheerful atmosphere helps reduce the
fears and anxieties of patients. This in turn helps to improve
communication and collaboration between staff, parents
and patients for a more successful clinical outcome. Visual tool for treatment
“The difference that the artists have made is incredible, and has really helped to enhance the environment for our young patients. It has been a
real pleasure to have the artists on site every day. They were so professional and pleasant, which helped to make the experience so
positive.”

Forming friendships
Examples of posters
The team wanted a simple and fun tool to
communicate about respectfully sharing
living space. One of the artists, Alex, lived in
a home for refugees 18 years ago. His
experience was invaluable when they
brainstormed on communications materials.
In the end the artists designed posters on
values such as respect, hygiene and quiet
time and they were a big success!
Besides the projects we realise in healthcare and specialised institutions, AnoukFoundation tries to share its know-how through various artistic programmes with differentpartners.

Donors Cyclotour 2016 - Trafigura Foundation
The families living in the Tattes centre fled their
homes because they feared for their safety. They
are anxious and nervous about their unstable
situation. In addition, they encounter difficulties
in their daily routine (noise, conflicts, hygiene).
This results in a lot of tension and conflict, even
among children. To defuse those tensions, the
staff invited four Anouk artists to facilitate five
workshops for an average of 20 children where
they could be creative and bond with each other.
They liked it so much they were waiting at the
door one hour early every day!
This first successful collaboration paved the way for anew project which will take place in 2017: we willdesign communication pictogrammes for the differenthomes of Hospice général, create therapeutic muralsin the new parents-children area which will openshortly, and enhance the 12 buildings of the Tattescentre to create a welcoming and reassuringatmosphere.

Engagement Service in Action (year-long commitment in the form of community hours)
Students created activity and memory games in the format of placemats for older patients
from Hôpital Loëx as well as door signs matching the murals created by Anouk artists
at Clair Bois-Chambésy.
Everyone put a lot of creativity, heart and motivation into these projects and we got very enthusiastic feedback from both institutions! We sincerely thank the students, Ms. Karin
Bain and the school for this great collaboration!
We started the Kids4Kids programme in 2015 to engage students from local schools in the context of theirService in Action programmes.
Through this programme, we provide an opportunity for children and adolescents to develop their creativity, team spirit and empathy as part of their curriculum by creating tools (activity booklets, door signs, etc.) whichimprove the wellbeing of younger and older patients in hospitals or homes.
Students reflect on what being hospitalised means and what they would like to see or play with if they had tospend time in medical or specialised institutions. They then come up with specific projects and startimplementing them.
This programme has been received with great enthusiasm, and will continue in 2017!

“Both parents and nurses report that the music programme is used daily over many months with each child and always has the
desired effect to either stimulate or to calm .”
Judith Wieland, Head Nurse at University Children Hospital, Zurich
This Music Listening Programme was created with Dr. Petra Kern, music therapist, in 2012. It has been used inthe Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre of the Children’s Hospital in Zurich since 2013 for patients with severephysical and mental disabilities (such as severe cerebral palsy or trauma).
Nurses use the programme to calm the patients during
pain or other troubled episodes, for example dystonia,
muscle spasms, general pain. It is also used to help
patients fall asleep during wakeful nights, and to get up
in the morning, so as not to miss their physical therapy
sessions.
Parents welcome the programme and look forward to
using it with their children. It provides an enjoyable
activity to share, and can be structured into the day and
helps to relieve the feeling of powerlessness.

Thefunds went towards three local projects in the Geneva canton: TattesCentre in Vernier, Maison Sous-Balme in Veyrier and Hôpital Trois-Chênein Thônex.
Johnson & Johnson employees supported the elderly patients of a nursinghome in Zurich by creating a memory game and placemats. They workeddirectly onsite for a day with the beneficiaries and the institution wasdelighted with the outcome and interaction.During two days, Shire employees created activity pages for hospitals inGlasgow and Zurich. The feedback from hospitals is very positive, as theyfind great use in the bespoke activity-pages to distract the children as theydiscuss treatments with the parents.Procter & Gamble held a workshop for us to share their know-how andexpertise on communication and fundraising.
SWIFT sponsored a project at Ecole Auguste Buchet through Sibos, theirannual conference. They also invited our artists to work onsite during Sibosweek to create live art that attendees could help develop. Further they setup a digital game with SWIFT donating funds each time the game wasplayed.

In an effort to increase our impact and to involve the local community, we have reachedout to companies so they could support a project in their local town or the country of theirchoosing, and help us grow to carry out more projects. We have worked with companies to create tailor-made programmes which fit their goals.
We believe in spreading the message and engaging local communities to effect socialchange through the arts. Through new communication materials and tools, we strive toachieve broader social impact by engaging the general public.
How Anouk Foundation fits into the community
We create community-engaged art: we work directly with the community as we create tailor-made
projects in close collaboration with the artists, the staff (doctors, nurses, educators) and the patients.
We have 8 years’ experience working with 70 local institutions all over Europe; we build collaborative
partnerships bringing together healthcare institutions, academic institutions, schools, community
centres, artists and local communities, to work together creatively on common goals, mobilise action,
develop solutions and bring about positive impact.
We work with a team of professional, independent and experienced artists who follow an ongoing
training programme on the artistic, psychological and hospital-related aspects of their activities. Our
process empowers our artists to be change agents, stimulates dialogue and builds bridges of connection
and understanding.
