EXPANDED EMPHASIS ON LEADERSHIP – EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME

Neonatologists, even those who are not in formal leadership positions, must have leadership skills to provide care as part of a medical team. Organizations, from local hospitals to state and national bodies such as the AAP Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and the AAP, also need skilled leadership. These skills are not typically a point of emphasis during training or at medical conferences. A major goal of this workshop will be to provide a variety of opportunities for attendees to enhance their leadership skills, thereby assuring that we continue a strong tradition of leadership in our profession.

FEATURED SPEAKER

L. Joseph Butterfield Lecture

The Molecular Era of Lung Biology: Lessons from Newborn InfantsJeffrey A. Whitsett, MD

Dr. Jeffrey A. Whitsett received his medical degree from Columbia University, in New York, and has been a faculty member at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center since 1977.

He is internationally known for his research in developmental pulmonary biology, as well as clinical expertise in neonatology. Dr. Whitsett has made a series of groundbreaking contributions in pulmonary medicine, including major pioneering work on surfactant proteins A, B, C and D, clarifying their roles in lung development. He has been a leader in making surfactant protein replacement routine for treating respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants. His laboratory has contributed to the identification of a number of genes critical for lung formation and function.

Dr. Whitsett is a member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and has received many prestigious awards, including a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Merit Award, the first Julius Comroe Lectureship in Pulmonary Research from FASEB, the Daniel Drake Medal for scientific contributions from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, the International Arvo Ylppö Medal from the Finnish Foundation for Pediatric Research and the Grand Hamdan International Award on Neonatal Medicine from the United Erab Emirates. In 2015, he received the Virginia Apgar Award from the American Academy of Pediatric’s Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

SPECIAL CODING SEMINAR

This seminar is designed to instruct neonatologists about CPT codes and how they are used in daily practice. Application of codes to various patient conditions and situations will be explored using audience response system (ARS) technology. Discussion will include recommendations from the audience on the needs and limitations of the current codes. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to participate in this optional educational opportunity.

EXTENDED CODING SEMINAR FOR CODING AND BILLING PROFESSIONALS

Please join Drs. Ed Liechty and David Kanter from the Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Coding Trainers Committee immediately after lunch on Friday for an afternoon discussion exclusively devoted to issues and concerns relevant to your practices, such as:

• Role of diagnostic coding for hospital reimbursement: APR-DRGs• ICD-10 and CPT updates relevant to Neonatologists• Role of Hospital Care vs. Well-Baby care coding in normal newborn nursery• Focus on copy functionality in hospital-based EHR• Unique coding scenarios when transferring patients: to lesser levels of care; to other groups; to other hospitals• Delivery room coding: attendance and procedures• Transport coding: supervision and attendance• Intensive vs. Critical care coding in NICU• Working with nurse practitioners• Using physician documentation to support proper coding

Joe Butterfield was an expert in coordinating the expertise and energies of his colleagues and predecessors while applying his own leadership skills to create new and effective strategies and solutions. He recognized that the neonatal intensive care unit involves the efforts of a broad, multidisciplinary team of people. He reached out to many provider health groups in taking leadership to develop systems for health care education and health care delivery, which have been important in promoting safe, effective, neonatal care. The 18th offering of this lecture will provide the background and current understanding of the developmental pulmonary biology as it relates to respiratory disorders of the newborn.
