Expeditions provide students with exciting, innovative learning opportunities most Fridays during the school year. Students will choose from seven expeditions, each meeting from 1-3pm on four consecutive Fridays. All expeditions are hands on, ungraded and focused on lighting a spark of student interest.

All of the expeditions offered during the 2016-2017 school year are listed in this guide. Each of the three Expe-ditions categories – Wellness, Arts, Learning Beyond – focuses on four areas of learning:

Chopped Cooking ChallengeYou will be challenged to become a ‘Chopped Chef.’ You will have to learn to cook with a random combination of healthy yet delicious ingredients. You will show off your skills at the end of the ex-pedition to a panel of food taste testers. You will be judged on taste, creativity and presentation.

*Also offered as a Learning Beyond Expedition

Intro to Mind Body FitnessLooking for the total mind/body fitness routine? In this Expedition, students will sample different types of programs that improve flexibility and strength, such as: stretching, Pilates, and BARRE. No experience required, all levels welcome!

Intro to Cardio/Strength FitnessReady to get the heart pumping and those muscles working? In this Expedition, students will sam-ple different types of cardio or strength programs, such as: cardio circuit, body pump, tabata, and spin core. No experience required, all levels welcome. Bring your water bottle!

Outdoor Survival SkillsHave you ever thought about how you would survive if you were cut off from civilization? Would you panic, or would you know what to do? In the Outdoor Survival Skills Expedition, you will learn how to build a fire, construct a shelter, purify water and fish for your dinner. The knowledge learned during this expedition may save your life one day!

Intro to Racket SportsIn this expedition, students will be introduced to, learn about, and play four racket sports: tennis, paddle tennis, racquetball, and squash. Any level of experience with any or all of the racket sports is welcome!

WELLNESS EXPEDITIONS

Dancin’ MachineCome with us as we discover the many different styles of dance! We will work up a sweat learning everything from hip- ‐hop, jazz, tap, ballet and even salsa. Feel the rhythm and get your feet moving. No experience needed. *Also offered as an Arts Expedition

WELLNESS EXPEDITIONSWELLNESS EXPEDITIONS

Can You Have Your Cake and Eat It Too?Have you ever wondered exactly where that food goes after you eat it? What happens to the pro-teins, carbohydrates and fats we consume? In this expedition, we look at how our food choices af-fect our bodies and how our bodies use the food molecules we eat. We will make trips to four local restaurants to order, eat and determine the roles of these food items in our diet.

True Body ProjectJust for the girls! Want to take some time to really understand who you are and how to be the best you possible? The True Body Project is for you! Learn how to understand and appreciate all things involved with being a girl.

Community OutreachWant to make a difference in our community but don’t know how to start? Join us as we reach out to the people in our community. Together, we will create a plan to work together in order to help others.

H2O Fitness and FunCome play in the water! In this expedition, we will be exploring, learning about, and playing different water sports and water fitness options. We will also be learning about basic water safety. A basic level of swimming skills and comfort is suggested for this expedition.

*Students will need to bring a swimsuit, towel and flip flop shoes.

Exploring International FoodsYou will learn about a variety of international foods from local restaurant owners and chefs, and cook food alongside the professionals. At the end of the expedition, you will have the skills to cook new foods for friends and family. *Also offered as a Wellness Expedition

Run Toward FitnessRun Toward Fitness is designed to accommodate the fitness level of each participant and work to help each participant progress towards a higher fitness level. This expedition is designed for students at any fitness level who want to improve general fitness. Choosing the right shoe for you, nutrition, and mental and physical wellness are the focuses of this expedition, with a 2- ‐mile run in Mariemont’s South 80 Trail for as a culminating event.

Elementary School OutreachWant to visit our elementary schools and help your former teachers in their classrooms? During this Expedition, we will volunteer at Mariemont Elementary and Terrace Park Elementary. Students will participate by reading with students, displaying work on bulletin boards, helping students with their work, and leading activities.

Mindfulness & YouCome and empower yourself to best connect with friends, family, community, and most importantly self through breath, poses, affirmations, books, and visual arts. The knowledge learned through this Expedition will guide you to be your best you!

Intro to Sports MedicineThinking about a future in sports medicine? Come learn more about what it takes to keep athletes safe, healthy and performing at their best. In this expedition, you will also get hands- ‐on training and practice the tasks athletic trainers and sports medicine staffs do on a regular basis for their athletes.

Tower to Plate - Planting seeds at MJHSCome and build a tower garden with us! Tower gardens are a vertical aeroponic garden that is har-vestable within a month. We would then use your own fresh grown produce to create an edible meal and have a garden party. We will also be visiting and working on a real farm and planting on the school grounds!

Hands on at the FarmCome and get your hands dirty on a real working farm! We will be helping a local farm by volun-teering on four Fridays. While having a great time outdoors, we will also be learning, getting messy, having fun, and helping the community.

Guys 101: A Leadership Experience for MJHS Boys : Calling all boys! Ever wonder what it takes to be truly successful in the field of athletics, politics, business, or com-munications? Well here¹s your chance to hear from the experts who are living the dream! Boy in this expedition will hear from some of the top performers in their fields about how they got there, and what any of you can do to reach the same level of accomplishment.

Intro to CosmetologyAre you interested in hair, makeup, or skin care? Would you like to know more about the new trends in cosmetology? Join this Expedition to learn from current experts as well as students in the field. We will celebrate with a makeover day for you and a parent/guardian/friend.

Art ScavengersCome join our kick off with a scavenger hunt at the Cincinnati Art Museum! Choose visual art pieces that inspire you to create your own artwork. Become familiar with the artist who created the piece(s) and the time period that inspired them. Find your inspiration!

Intro to WoodworkingCome and learn basic woodworking techniques along with safety methods in the workshop! You will learn how to create projects using the mini lathe, such as pens, pencils, bottle stoppers, magni-fying glasses, gavels and mini bats. Come make something with your own two hands!

Introduction to GuitarAre you interested in learning the basics of guitar playing? Want to explore the guitar and learn to take off in any genre? Sign up for this expedition and start strumming!

Theatre WorksDo you dream of a career in the theatre? Are you interested in stage drama and everything that occurs behind the scenes to make a performance possible? Do you enjoy seeing live theatre and hearing from real actors and theatre professionals? Then join us! Students will travel to Playhouse in the Park, tour the performance area and get an insider’s look at the entire theatre experience. No experience necessary! *Also offered as a Learning Beyond Expedition

Combined Band PerformanceDo you want the opportunity to get together with other junior high musicians and collaborate?

Our combined band rehearsal will do just that! Give us the chance to be bigger and stronger as a combined band and wow our audiences! *Required for all band students

Combined Orchestra PerformanceDo you want the opportunity to get together with other junior high musicians and collaborate? Our combined orchestra rehearsal will do just that! Give us the chance to be bigger and stronger as a

combined orchestra and wow our audiences! *Required for all orchestra students

Be the Art Critic!Calling all artsy MJHS students! Learn how to ‘read’ works of art and prove your interpretations with intelligent and persuasive writing. We will travel offsite to local museums and galleries to practice these skills first hand. Explore culture and enter a state-wide art criticism writing competition.

The Art of GlassExperience science and art together while learning to work with glass as a sculpture medium. Visit Neusole Glassworks to observe and work with experts in the field. Travel to the high school to experiment with glass slumping and fusing.

iPhone PhotographyOne of the world’s most versatile cameras is the iPhone in your pocket! With a little know-how and imagination, camera phones are capable of taking amazing images. During this Expedition, we will explore technical and creative approaches to iPhone photography!

Band 101: Learning a New InstrumentDo you wish you could be in the MJHS Band? Well, here’s your chance! Sign up to learn to play flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or tuba. We will quickly learn one of these instruments so that you can join your grade level band this school year! Come join us and rock out with your band friends!

Rain Barrels: Science & Art TogetherLearn about how rain barrels are used to conserve and reuse rainwater for lawns and gardens. Brainstorm imagery for a rain barrel, choose a design and transfer it to a barrel that will be auctioned off at the Cincinnati Zoo’s Annual Spring Event.

Women’s ChorusOur Women’s Chorus Expedition will prepare you to take your voice outside of the school walls! A series of mini- ‐concerts will prepare us to wow our audiences!

*Required for all women’s chorus students

Ceramics: Throwing on a WheelTravel offsite to learn to throw a clay pot or bowl on a wheel (this is harder than it looks!). Create bowls and pots and glaze them back at MJHS. Organize a sale or auction of bowls, with proceeds going to a charitable cause (Tender Mercies or The Freestore Food Bank).

The Triple ThreatHave you ever wanted to learn what it takes to become a Broadway star? Being able to sing, dance and act is what makes a triple threat on stage! In this class we will show you the basics of musical theatre. No experience needed. *Also offered as a Learning Beyond Expedition

Men’s ChorusOur Men’s Chorus Expedition will prepare you to take your voice outside of the school walls! A se-ries of mini- ‐concerts will prepare us to wow our audiences!

*Required for all men’s chorus students

The World’s a StageHave an interest in acting and storytelling? Join us on a journey as we learn to unlock characters and become storytellers. We’ll play acting games and do improve exercises. The World’s a Stage Expedition will help you discover the actor inside of you that you didn’t even know was there!

Handmade Paper Workshop & Printing With a PressCreate your own customized handmade paper from things to be recycled. Hear from an expert and exhibiting artist in the field. Use your paper to create beautiful landscape compositions & col-lagraph prints.

From Page to StageDo you like to act? Develop your theatre skills and talents on stage and off. This expedition will give you training in acting, improvisation, costume, movement and voice. During the first couple of weeks we will read scripts, decide on a script, try out for parts and practice. The expedition will culminate with a final performance showcasing our collaboration.

Electronic Garage BandInterested in creating your own garage band – electronic style? Learn more about composing mu-sic by using computer programming to create your very own garage band and songs! No experi-ence required.

A cappellaLove “Glee”? Want to learn more about singing a cappella style? Join this expedition to learn more about your own singing style and improve your technique for singing or beat boxing. This is your chance to work on your own instrument – your voice!

Making Fun of SchoolScience with Taylor Swift? Math with Adele? Or maybe social studies with Kendrick Lamar? If you like creating music and the idea of songwriting, then this is the class for you. In this expedition, you will learn how to take any school subjector topic and create a musical parody. Put new words to your favorite songs and make a music video. *This is also a Learning Beyond Expedition.

Band/Orchestra 201: Chamber Music & Small EnsemblesAre you interested in performing in small ensembles or as a soloist? Looking to gain more experi-ence on your band or orchestra instrument? Join us & play some chamber music and even prepare for Solo & Ensemble festival. You’ll end with a performance on a stage and receive a recording of your music.

Beginning OrchestraCalling all band, chorus, and arts students – or anyone interested! Do you ever wish that you had tried a string instrument? Sign up to learn to play violin, viola, cello, or bass. We will quickly learn one of these instruments just for fun or so that you can join your grade level orchestra this school year. Come join us!

STOMPLove making noise? Want to stomp, smash, crash, and thrash your way to a beat? Come join STOMP and we will use everyday items as instruments as we make awesome music. We will end with a performance showing off our skills!

Innovative Blogging and Digital JournalingHave you ever wanted your OWN unique online writing space? Then this is the expedition for you! In this session, you will set up your own creative writing blog, work on unique writing pieces each week, and add content such as videos and images to enhance the overall blog. You will be able to use your personal blog during this expedition session and beyond.

Introduction to Public RelationsEver wonder how stories make it to press or TV? Wonder what it takes to cover an event? This expedition will take you through a public relations event, from interviewing, taking/collecting pic-tures, pitching the media and posting on social media sites and the district website. We will also take a field trip to a local TV station.

Experience the Oaks: Architecture and ConstructionDo you think planning, designing, and building are for you? Then you should come see what stu-dents at The Oaks do to prepare for a career in these fields. Learn about heavy equiptment opera-tions, HVAC, construction, electricity, and more!

Cinema LiteratureDo you love to read books? Do you love to watch movies? In Cinema Literature, we will read a pop-ular/current book that has been made into a movie and then watch the movie on the big screen! We will also have a book club type discussion about the book and movie.

Experience the Oaks: Health SciencesDo you think being in the world of medicine and health might be a good fit for you? Come check out programs at the Oaks such as health and surgery technologies, nursing, and even dental assisting. Ask questions, participate, engage!

Ancient Mythology Meets the Modern WorldWhat do Pyramus from the city of Babylon, Romeo from the city of Verona, and Tony from “West Side Story” all have in common? Mythological stories and references are used all through literature, theatre, film and the modern world. Explore ways that characters and stories from ancient mythol-ogy have been used throughout history, even in our modern era. Then take your turn – choose an ancient myth and retell it using a modern setting.

College ExplorationThis is an opportunity for you to explore local colleges and post high school opportunities that col-leges can offer, giving you a glimpse into college life. Tour a campus, learn about financial aid and see what college and post- ‐secondary options can offer you!

Bravery in HistoryWhat does it mean to be brave? Answer this question by exploring our past! You will learn about truly brave Americans who fought to end slavery and struggled for freedom in the Civil Rights Movement. This exploration will take you on a field trip to the Underground Railroad Freedom Cen-ter, and you will get the chance to express yourself through creative writing or artwork. Come learn about brave Americans who changed our country for the better!

Learning Launched! RocketryRocketry and propulsion are used to move many objects on earth and in space. Learn how to de-sign and build a rocket from scratch and then use math and science to determine where it will fly and land. You will leave with a self-built rocket.

Tinkerspace MJHSDo you like to destroy things? Do you like to create things? The MJHS Tinkerspace is a place where you can do both! Circuits, robots, fabrics, cardboard, mechanics, paint and more are involved in this new Makerspace- ‐like expedition, designed to give you the opportunity to get your hands on cool materials and tap into your creative side. Join and create something new in the Tinkerspace MJHS Expedition!

Experience the Oaks: Transportation and MechanicsDo you like cars? Trucks? Putting them back together, making them better, and keeping them running? Then you need to check out what students at The Oaks do to prepare for a career in the Automotive Industry. Learn about all things related to automotive technology including collision, mechanics, and industrial diesel mechanics. Come check it out!

Ancient Roman MosaicsIntegrate your interests in Latin, History and Art in this expedition, resulting in fabulous tile mosaics. Learn about the rich traditions behind ancient mosaics and choose a historical event to depict. Work individually or in a small group to create original tile mosaics.

Fun with FrenchBonjour! Come and join us for an exploration of French language and culture! Learn some common and useful French expressions. Expand your knowledge of French food (yum!), art, literature, and history. Experience how French and French culture influences our world today!

Life Skills 101In this expedition, you will begin to explore those all- ‐important life skills for when you are out on your own. Want to know how to open a checking and savings account? Interested in an intro to financial literacy lesson? How to sew a button and do basic mending? How to complete an applica-tion for a job, a library card, or voter registration? An overview of personal safety and self- ‐defense? Come learn life skills!

Digging Up the Past: Learning from ArtifactsHow can artifacts show what life was like during a certain time period? How do we learn from our past? Come get your fingers dirty with old artifacts! Explore artifacts and archaeology from the an-cient world and right here in Mariemont. Then create your own artifact to share in our own MJHS museum.

MJHS Criminal Science InvestigationHave you ever wondered how crime scene investigators use evidence to solve a crime? Do you like watching shows like CSI? Join our MJHS Criminal Science Investigation Expedition. We will be learning cool forensics detection skills through hands-on lab investigation work and then using skills to solve a mock crime!

The Amazing Race and Survivor ChallengeStudents will use GPS devices to create and complete challenges. Students with or without geo-caching experience are welcome. Be ready to test your navigational abilities!

Debate and compromise with your classmates to come up with what your party will stand for and create a campaign ad to try and convince others to join!

Turkish in 4 weeksDo you love learning languages? Are you a confident person who thrives on challenging yourself to achieve things others think is “too hard”? If you are the type of person who loves diving into new and uncharted territory without a paddle, come learn how to teach yourself a foreign language and see how much Turkish you can learn in a short 4 weeks.

Learning the City and Giving BackIn this Expedition, students will learn the history of the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. There will be a walking tour of the area to view historic buildings. A volunteer opportunity will be organized for the Expedition.

Introduction to American Sign LanguageCome join this Expedition for a beginner’s introduction to American Sign Language! Learn the ba-sics of communication, important words and phrases, and how to best communicate using sign language. Then, put your learning into action to communicate in a brand new way! No experience needed.

Reminders for selecting expeditions:• Expeditions will be offered based on student interest. Selecting an expedition does not guarantee that it will be offered or fit in your Expedition schedule.• Make your own choices! Many expeditions will be offered a few times throughout the year – so making the same choice as a friend doesn’t mean you’ll be in their expedition. Pick for you! • Please rank your choices.
