Awards of Distinction and Clerk of the Year On Thursday night, April 28, 2016, at the “White Party” themed Annual Banquet, we will be honoring fellow City Clerks with Awards of Distinc- tion and City Clerk of the Year. It is always exciting to recog- nize special accomplishments of our fellow clerks with the Awards of Distinction and to find out who will be the Clerk of the Year at the banquet. I have enjoyed receiving and reading the numerous nomina- tions that have been submit- ted. It confirms for me that City Clerks do indeed “Promote Our Profession Effectively”. CCAC CANCELLATION POL- ICY REMINDER An attendee may cancel: (a) for a full refund less an ad- ministrative fee of 25% if more than 30 days before the event (b) up to 15 days before the event and receive a 50% re- fund (c) less than 15 days before the event, however no refund will be issued Qualified refunds will be pro- cessed after the event. Exceptions: There are excep- tions to this policy if there is a medical emergency or death in the attendee’s immediate family. Exceptions to the can- cellation policy are only given in consultation with both the CCAC Treasurer and CCAC President. If you have not registered, please do so immediately. Our hotel room block at the host hotel – Hyatt Newport Beach - is sold out. You still may be able to make reservations for the Hyatt but no longer at our reduced conference rate. We have also made arrangements at an overflow hotel, the Radisson Newport Beach. For those attendees that still need room reservations, the Radisson can accommodate our group at their current per diem rate of $150 per night, but please know that it will be based on the hotel’s availability. You can either call for reservations at (800) 333-3333 or visit the website at www.radisson.com/ newportbeachca. It’s not too late to register for the Pat Hammers Memorial Run/Walk on Thursday morning, April 28, 2016. This annual event raises funds for the CCAC Education Fund and more im- portantly honors the memory and legacy of former Cathedral City Clerk Pat Hammers. So RISE AND SHINE!! Come join your fellow City Clerks for a morning walk in beautiful Newport Beach. Registration is only $25 and you will receive a custom- ized reusable water bottle. The Wednesday night event out will be a movie premiere, red carpet, paparazzi styled event. The selected film will be con- firmed soon (it is much harder than I expected to secure a “premiere” upcoming new re- lease). If our attempts to get an upcoming new release are unsuccessful, then we will be looking to secure “The Boss” starring Melis- sa McCarthy. Please note: “The Boss” opens this weekend in theaters, so don’t go and see it yet… just in case (smile). Don’t delay, purchase your $65 tick- et for the “Wednesday Night Out” event today. for attendance at TTC. Ninety-four (94) of you attended the Technical Track for Clerks (TTC) Series 100 Course in Riverside, CA - March 15-18, with eleven (11) graduating at-tendees. To put this in perspective, when I attended TTC a little more than ten years ago, there were prob-ably 35 attendees…almost one-third of this record number! This training, along with the Nuts & Bolts trainings and the MMC Academy are impera-tive and vital educational opportuni-ties for our profession in California. I would like to thank the TTC Institute Director, Maureen Kane, for consist-ently providing quality educational opportunities for us along with her dedicated team of instructors and volunteers. If this is any indication of the future for our profession, California will be in great shape for decades to come. SOUTHERN DIVISION MEETING I attended the Southern Division’s meeting on March 25, 2016 hosted by the City of Santa Monica at the An-nenberg Community Beach House. What an awesome location/venue and session topic!! Gloria Young’s presentation on “Managing Smarter Matters” was well received and par-

ticularly keyed in on building powerful relationships with staff and successful-ly transitioning from “peer-to-peer to peer-to-manager” relationships. Thank you to Southern Division Presi-dent Vicki Kasad and the Southern Division Board for all of your hard work. It was great to see a large turn-out for this meeting, the raffle prizes were fantastic and the newly ap-pointed Santa Monica City Clerk Denise Anderson-Warren and her staff were very gracious hosts. NOMINATING COMMITTEE / UP-COMING ELECTION I will be appointing the 2015-2016 Nominating Committee members this month. The 2016 CCAC Annual Conference is right around the corner! Have you been wondering how you can help? Consider donating to the Silent Auction, Wine Pull or volunteer to help out during the Con-ference. Fundraisers are held each year so that CCAC can continue to provide scholarships to our various educational sessions. We will be holding our ever popular Silent Auction again this year. We accept all donations, big and small! Consider donating any of these popular items:

The Wine Pull is also back. We ask that donated wines have a mini-mum value of $15. For those of you interested in purchasing a cork (don’t worry, you get the bottle of wine too!) see us in the CCAC Store / Silent Auction Room. We are happy to arrange for pickup or delivery of donated items, whether you are attending the Conference or not. But we certainly hope to see you there! If you are interested in helping out at the Conference, or other upcoming events, please complete the Member Interest Form and return to one of the Trustees. CCAC appreciates your support! Vicki Kasad, MMC Southern Division Chair

Hello California Clerks! It is difficult to believe how quickly my year as Southern Division chair is flying by……I only have one more meeting! It has been and will continue to be a great experience and we have seen some truly wonderful events. As part of my year, I wanted to make sure that I was familiar with the entire Southern Division. Having been born and raised in Southern California, I feel like I am familiar with most of it, but I redis-covered an area I was only mildly familiar with in my childhood. As a child, I frequently travelled to the Salton Sea to camp with my family, but honestly as an adult had no con-cept of where it actually was! So one Thursday afternoon in February, I set out to explore Imperial County…..home of the Salton Sea. The Clerk’s of Imperial County had gracious-ly agreed to meet me for dinner and discuss the CCAC reorganization and City Clerk issues in general. First, I must say I am always amazed at how far everything is once you leave the metropolitan areas of California. I drove for about 2-1/2 hours, but finally reached Imperial County and saw the Salton Sea of my youth. It looked a little differ-ent……the crowds that used to cover the beaches were gone, but otherwise it looked

the same. From there I met the Clerks in Brawley and spent a few hours learning about this area that was previously unknown to me. Imperial is the newest County in California, established in 1907, and located in the south eastern most corner of California. I had no idea that this “desert” area was a great agricultural area, producing brussel sprouts, carrots, onions, lettuce, cauliflower, melons and a seemingly unending list of other fruits and vegetables. I learned about huge water and sewer projects currently underway. And final-ly, I learned that El Centro, the county seat, is the winter home of the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squad-ron, The Blue Angels. The wonders and history of California still never cease to amaze me. As a Division, in January our meeting was hosted by the City of Buena Park and City Clerk Shalice Tilton and provided a thorough overview by representatives of Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith of the requirements and processes associated with “Claims, Lawsuits, Subpoenas and Summons”.

Most recently we were hosted by new Santa Monica City Clerk Denise Anderson-Warren, on March 25th …………..on the beach, at the Annenberg Community Beach House. Yes, these were the views we had to endure while training; the joys of Southern California! Fortunately, the training was inter-esting and interactive, with Gloria Young, presenting “Managing Smart-er Matters” so our minds didn’t stray too much! We were busy reviewing out leadership qualities, managerial skills, opportunities for building a high performance team, and learning how to use our brain power to the most advantage. Although we are nearing my last official meeting in Mission Viejo in June, we still have one more big adventure for the year. Everyone get ready! The CCAC Annual Conference……in Newport Beach (Southern California) is less that one month away! I look forward to spending time with each of you! Be sure to bid on the Southern Division fundraising basket, as we bring you “A Taste of Southern California”!
