While the physical space has provided a welcoming atmosphere for families to meet, it is the fellowship and support that parents share with one another that is most valuable. Jessie goes on to share: Our family has been part of the Little Lambs group since it originally started when our oldest was just a toddler. I look forward to gathering with the Little Lambs families every Sunday for many reasons. Sometimes we sit and just chat about nothing, other times we talk to each other about the struggles/joys we are having with our children. We have also helped each other by praying and lifting each other up during difficult times such as surgery, personal loss, health issues and so on. The bonds that I have made with the families that are part of this group is something I will always carry with me. It is a time where I can watch my child play and interact with other children and connect with other parents in a relaxed and open setting. We rarely miss a Sunday and my children look forward to the time as much as I do! This group has been a true blessing to our entire family. Little Lambs meets every Sunday, during the school year, from 9:15 – 10:15. All families, with children under the age of 3, are welcome to stop by the nursery and join in with this group.

Good Earth Village Something for Everyone

While summer has yet to arrive here in Minnesota, many people are already making their summer plans. If you are looking for various opportunities for you and your family, check out all that Good Earth Village (in Spring Valley, MN) has to offer! Camping experiences at Good Earth Village are organized for our youngest children all the way up to a “Grand Camp” created for grandparent(s) and their grand children.

If your child is interested in exploring camp,

but not overnight, then check out Village Kids

(open for K – 5th grade). At this camp, children

experience worship, games, small groups,

creek splashing, hiking, going to a pool and

campfire worships. This experience runs from

M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with an option to

be transported to/from Rochester. Various

dates are open for this camp, including the

week that Hosanna youth/staff will be at Good

Earth Village for Confirmation Camp (June 13-

17). Have questions about camp? Check out

GEV’s website or contact Darcy Youngstrom.

Little Lambs Update The new nursery space is coming together as we continue to explore ways to support our Little Lambs (0-3 year olds) and their families. Jessie Senst, mother of two growing boys, shares her perspective on using this new space:

The new space has been amazing! We (Little Lambs) are able to welcome more families and the space is large enough that our children can play (even with the loud toys) and the adults are still able to talk among themselves. I have noticed that since Little Lambs has moved into a larger space, more families are joining the group and now it is easier for more parents to participate. Last week we had entire families, all together, in the space and it still felt like there was room for children to run around and play.

The Senst Family: Jeff, Jessie,

Caleb & Isaac

rd

Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Coffee is on and members take turns bringing treats. The book to be discussed in March is The Residence by Kate Anderson Brower. America’s First Families are among the most private, public figures on earth. No one understands the president of the United States and his family like the men and women who make the White House run every day. The Residence tells their stories – fifty years, ten administrations (from the Kennedy’s to the Obama’s) and countless crises large and small. All are invited to join in the discussion of this fascinating, behind the scenes look at life in the White House as told by the White House staff. You may contact Barb Anderson, [email protected], with questions. The book scheduled for April 16 is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

Heroes of the Faith

March 6

8:00 and 10:30 am at Hosanna

3:00pm at Samaritan Bethany on 8th

Heroes of the Faith, Hosanna’s 25th intergenerational

musical, will be presented on March 6 at 8:00am and

10:30am at Hosanna and at 3:00pm at Samaritan

Bethany on 8th Street. Heroes of the Faith takes us on a

unique field trip where Biblical characters come to life to

teach modern day people how to become heroes. We all

learn lessons of faith when the tour group discovers

people from the Old Testament and New Testament

while touring a museum exhibition. Through dialogue and

songs these Bible heroes tell about their exciting

adventures and how ordinary people become extraordinary heroes who can help change the

world when they listen and follow God’s command.

There will be two displays relating to the musical. There will be photos and the program of Heroes of the Faith from Hosanna’s 2000 production available for viewing on March 6. Also, the congregation has been invited to fill out forms answering the questions, “Who is your hero of the faith?” and “Why?” The heroes could be from the Bible, a historical figure, a person of modern times, family members or acquaintances. The responses will be posted on room dividers in the gathering area and narthex.

From Outreach Advocate

Terri Ashworth Hello! My name is Terri Ashworth and I am excited to be your new Outreach Advocate for the next two years. I look forward to supporting our current outreach ministry teams and welcome any new ideas. My husband Ray is serving as president this year and in last month’s newsletter he introduced our family. Our two children, now young adults were baptized and confirmed at Hosanna and loved growing up and being a part of the many fun-filled, faith building activities and services Hosanna offers. I am active in Hosanna Choir and enjoy participating in our annual musicals. By the way, “Heroes of the Faith” is March 6th!

March is Minnesota FoodShare Month Hosanna will host a food and a fund drive in which we will all have the opportunity to be Heroes by supporting our local food shelves. Our campaign “Let’s Knockout Hunger” will

kickoff March 6th and run through March 31st. Last year with your support we brought in 624 lbs. of food. Our Goal this year is to weigh in at 700 lbs on March 31st! So Let’s Knock out Hunger and support this fight by bringing in non-perishable food items during the month of March. You can place your items in the boxing ring in the gathering area. Consider also working at Hosanna’s Pantry on March 26th as part of your donation to March FoodShare Month. For more than 30

years, Minnesota FoodShare has coordinated the March Campaign, the annual grassroots food and fund drive that provides more than half the food distributed by 300 food shelves throughout the state. The March Campaign is the only statewide effort where every dollar donated goes directly to food shelves to purchase food for the hungry. Let’s Knockout Hunger together! Hosanna families are asked to join in the fight against hunger during the month of March. We are asking families to donate the following specific items during the upcoming month: Little Lambs: Baby Care Products - diapers, wipes etc. Preschool – K: Breakfast Foods - pancake mix, muffin mix, hot/dry cereals 1

st – 2

nd Grade: Lunch Foods - hearty soups, vegetables, canned fruit

3rd

– 4th Grade: Supper Foods - boxed meals, tuna, canned beef/chicken

5th – 6

th Grade: Personal Care Items - toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo

7th – 8

th Grade: Special Treats - granola bars, graham crackers etc.

Donations may be brought to the various classrooms and placed in the identified container or dropped off in the boxing ring in the gathering any anytime between March 6

th – March 31

st.

Together we can help knockout hunger!

Prayer Shawls March 14 & 25

The Prayer Shawl team meets twice a month, once in the evening and once during the day. Meetings are on the 2nd Monday at 6:30 pm and on the 4th Friday at 1:00 pm. If you like to knit or crotchet or would like to learn, you may join this caring ministry at any time. Please contact Carolyn Dahl at [email protected] with questions. Members may also stop by the office to pick up a prayer shawl for family or friends in need of prayer and comfort.

Hosanna’s Pantry March 25 & 26

All are invited to work at Hosanna’s Pantry on March 25 & 26 which is Easter weekend. Helping to provide food to families in need will be a wonderful way to share God’s love before spending Easter with your families. There’s something for all ages to do. You can help with the pantry set up on Friday morning, March 25 at 10:00 am. Or you can help greet families, help them shop, carry out groceries or clean up on Saturday, March 26 from 9:00—11:30 am. There’s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson, at [email protected] with questions.

Missionary in Papua, New Guinea

By: Pastor Ann Klavano Greetings from Brisbane, Australia. I'm here for cataract surgery, a fairly common day surgery there in the US but here one that forced me to be away from seminary for three weeks.

I want to tell you about my Christmas and New Years.

Christmas in PNG tends to be low key. Here Christmas is seen as a religious holiday, not a cultural event. Easter is just as big of an event or perhaps bigger. Also, many of our traditions, such as special Christmas decorations require some cash. When you are a subsistence farmer, you decorate with flowers, etc. year round. Again, less special signs of Christmas. Finally, Christianity is relatively new in PNG; 50 to 100 years in most areas. This means most community customs and celebrations have been tied to other events. At first I missed all the decorations and bustle around Christmas, but while here I've learned to appreciate the peace also.

I spent the second half of December relaxing back at seminary. Most of the students go home, as this is their summer break, so it is very quiet on campus. Christmas Eve we had a campus wide worship and party. On Christmas Day a few of us went swimming and had a picnic on the beach. It was so pleasant and so different from the elaborate Christmases I grew up with.

I gave a sermon during the New Years Eve worship (in Tok Pisin, so lots of work for me) and then we welcomed in the New Year by burning all the church decorations

from Christmas. Since the decorations are all fresh flowers and branches, they are dry by New Years. Bon fires are a lot of fun!

When I return to seminary, besides being able to see much better, we will be in the middle of Lent and looking forward to Easter. I

expect quite a celebration then. Pastor Ann Klavano Senior Flierl Seminary Papua New Guinea

March 6 – A Grand Cast This will be the fifth session in Hosanna’s Lenten Series: 40 Days of Giving. We will explore how God provided for the people at Israel is the Wilderness and in the Promised Land. March 13- Abundant Faith The Rev. Dr. Patricia Cuyatti, area secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Lutheran World Federation reflects on how the Lutheran church is dealing with the hunger issue in Latin America and around the world. March 20 – The Book of Psalms The Book of Psalms was the earliest hymnal and sung by the Hebrew people in their worship service at Synagogue. For us the Book of Psalms is also an important component of our worship service but it also serves as a rich source of comfort and guidance. This session will explore the depths of the Psalms for worship and devotion. March 27- Easter Breakfast Easter Breakfast will be served from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. Come for worship and join others for breakfast as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.

Hello,

I was able to attend the Rochester zoning meeting with Karl Dirksen on the topic of our cross tower in February. The main discussion was about our desire to keep the light on 24x7. There was a lot of discussion before the board finally approved our 24x7 request. The Lent soup suppers are a treat to look forward to on Wednesdays. A big Thank You to all of the people who help provide the soups and breads. Look for the sign-ups if you would like to bring a homemade soup. Ray Ashworth President

Safety Tips From the Safety and Security Team It's always good to be reminded of how to help keep volunteers, children and youth safe! The Safety and Security team would like to remind all staff and volunteers working with children and youth that you must have safety training every 2 years. More tips to come next month.

Hosanna's Safety and Security document can be found here: http://bit.ly/1SxTBsT, or on

the Hosanna web site under "About Us".

Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, We are so accustomed to hearing bad news which seems to fill the headlines and the airwaves. This, that attack, this scandal, that catastrophe—good news is scarce in this world of ours. Certainly ours is a time that may even be cynical and suspicious of “good news”. But the resounding proclamation of Easter Day is that all is well. It’s all

right. It’s all right! As Christians we say this not with easy, glib optimism as though evil did not exist in this world. We travel through Lent and the tragedy of Good Friday with its utter darkness. We are people who have faced the cross in all its obscenity as well as its glory. The great and good news of Easter morning is that in the end, God’s will, not ours is done! We have prayed repeatedly, “Thy will be done!” God fulfills our prayers in Jesus’ resurrection. Love is the victor. Death is not the end. In the end there is new life in Christ. Lent takes us from Ash Wednesday to the glorious victory of Jesus over those powers that are the antithesis of life. He lives and we live through him. Life is stranger than fiction. Existence has greater depths of beauty, mystery, and benediction than the wildest visionary ever dated to dream. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. Alleluia! Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers
