The venue, besides the flying hosts a Brewery, Restaurant, Lodges, Archery, Clay Pigeon shooting, live music, and lots more, take a look at there website; www.wildclover.co.za/.now to the flying, 9 pilots had entered the event, sheraaz first up in the intermediate class, now flying electric powered sebart wind s50 and by the looks at his scores will soon be moving up to advanced, just a shame he

was the only one flying intermediate. there seams to be a general lack of support for these lower classes which something that needs to be addressed.

anyway, moving on to the advanced class. the three stooges… rory, cobus and aubrey. the flying was very close on the first round giving the win to cobus, but aubrey found the right direction and won the 2nd and 3rd round but he sadly missed the 3rd round with a “dead stick” flight giving the win and overall class win to cobus.

rory showed great improvement all day and ended up with i think his highest score so far, great start to the season.

masters next, five entries had confirmed but unfortunately rodney has 4 stroke issues and to watch from the side-lines.

round 1 was won just by stuart ahead of ernie, Gerhard and ozzie. ozzie battled all day, “Ozzie, I told you to practice but you didn’t listen”. stuart had rather a heavy landing on his first round and didn’t notice the broken wheel and at the start of the second round tried to take-off only to have the plane dig into the runway and aborted that round scoring ‘0’ and the win to ernie. ozzie just gave up halfway with sun cream running into his eyes. round three was very close between stuart and ernie, ernie just winning it. stuart pulled all the stops out in the final round of the day with the highest percentage score and claiming not only the class win, but the “Planecrazyrc” highest percentage score, gift voucher.

the day ended up with a few of us having a couple of beers and something to eat in the restaurant.

thanks to the Judges, nic, ludwig martin and bernus for there time.

thanks to all of you who made this event a great success, next time i have been told the venue will be even better.

The next event is on the 8 March at TMFC, Monthly 2, this is 3 weeks before the western Province, a great practice event for the existing pilots and for the New pilots.

Well, out of the 10 confirmed 2 cancelled due to other commitments but we were then joined by and old favorite, Peter Aldridge who had decided to dust himself down and join in the fun.

So first up was Mike in the Intermediate with his new plane, the Typhoon he bought from Nazeem, Not bad scores for the first time with this plane, prospects are good for more class wins and moving up to Advanced. Peter struggled a bit, but regarding he has been out of competition for some years, not bad.

In the Advanced class, regulars Rory and Aubrey, both flying Quantums had a good battle. Rory showing Aubrey a clean pair of heels in round

one, but Aubrey found his feed and took the next three rounds and winning the class.

Masters last and really Stuart was one form winning the class ahead of Gerhard, Ernie and Rodney. Finally Rodney managed to finish a competition without the engine packing up, maybe he forgot his screw driver so he couldn’t fiddle with the setting.

The highest percentage score was one for the second time this season by Stuart with a score of 66.22%.

Finally I would like to that all 4 Judges, Martin, Nic, Ludwig and Burnus for there time and to TMFC for the use of there club, and to Aubrey for organizing cool drinks and the braai.

Next competition, WP champs at HRF on 28-29 March, 11 confirmed to date, hoping to get a few more.

After years of hard work it seams that Pattern aerobatics is alive and healthy in the Western Cape.

This years Western Province championships, which is now an all Pattern event was held at the first class venue at Helderberg. HRF is one of the best flying facilities in the Cape and saw 13 pilots entering this years event.

13 pilots flew 4 rounds in front of 5 judges over two days under clear blue skies and with little or no wind was open to some great flying.

First was Jacques in the Sportsman Class, Jacques had been promising to take part for a while, always saying, “not ready” but with some arm bending by other club members, he decided to enter. The idea really is to enjoy the event.

As Jacques approach the runway for his first flight, the sound of woodpeckers could be heard, NO, that’s no woodpeckers it’s the knees of Jacques!!

You know, that feeling will never go away no mater how long you fly this discipline, I blame it on the five judges, maybe if there were 5 beautiful women it might be different!

Anyway, Jacques with the help of fellow club member Rory, took to the sky. Flying in a straight line sound easy, but it just isn’t and Jacques found that out.

His percentage improved up till the 4th round but still, that’s the first event over, the next one should be easier.

The Intermediate class saw three entries, Peter, Mike and Sheraaz. Peter has been out of Pattern for some years but he has made a welcoming return to competition. Mike is still getting used to his new plane and Sheraaz has now got used to his Wind S50e.

This is going to be a very competitive class, the three scores quite close on the fourth round with Peter winning that round. But before that, rounds 1, 2 were clearly won by Sheraaz, round three was very close between Sheraaz and Peter, with Sheraaz winning that. Mike was having a slight problem with the line but in round 4 he found it and joined the other two with a 50%.

Some very close flying in the end, but Sheraaz was the clear winner, but he can’t stop practicing, Peter is hot on his heals.

A sad moment happened at the end of Peters 4th round flight. At HRF and along the edge of the N2 there are huge powers line, yep you guessed it. Hitting the lines is not a good thing and has a tendency of destroying your plane, that’s what Peter found out, OR was he trying to convert his 2 stroke to electric!!

11

The three regulars in Advanced where at it again. Aubrey showing a clean pair of heals to Cobus and Rory, well that was until round four when either Aubrey wasn’t listening to his caller, or his caller gave the wrong instruction, but either way Aubrey lost that round which was won by Cobus.

Cobus had struggled on all of his rounds except for a good +60% of the final round. Rory also found the going tough and didn’t manage to break in to the 60’s.

After all this, Aubrey still won the round ahead of Cobus and Rory.

Finally to the Masters class. Once again a very well supported class with 6 entries.

Ozzie joining in with a choice of two planes and loads of excuses found the maneuvers tough, the line tough, and tough to get over 50%. He managed to on his second round but it was clear that

he needs to spend a lot more time learning the schedule. John Calefato who has been around a long time and has a wealth of experience was knocking on the 60% door, not quite breaking through.

Rodney, with a well sorted Osmose scored high 50’s and finally a 60+ brought a big smile to his face, “wow is that what you look like when you are happy”. Great flying.

The top three, Ernie, Gerhard and Stuart

were left to fight for the top three places. Ernie and Gerhard had a very close battle with some good 60+ scores but they just couldn’t match the flying of Stuart who was on form scoring three high 60+ scores and winning all four rounds and the clear Masters winner.

One other award was given to Gerhard Mitton, who was awarded the PlaneCrazyRC most improved pilot. The top three in each class won certificates and trophies, with the class winners winning gift voucher from Micton Hobbies.

Despite the crash of Peter Aldridge, the event has to be put down as one of the best WP champs, Big thanks to all five judges, Martin, Nic, Bernus, Kas and Ludwig for there time over the weekend, to you all, enjoy the wine supplied by Boschkloof Wines.

Thanks to Lowe and Rodney for the catering, to the Sponsors, Micton Hobbies, Boschkloof Wines, PlaneCrazyRC, Matmone Construction and finally to Helderberg Radio Flyers.

a new face to the Pattern comps was Jeremy, a tmFc member entered his first competition.

now you have found out that flying in a straight line is not all that easy. but at least you have started, next time it will be easier. He did however improve on all 4 rounds which is the right way to go and i guess next time you will have some competition for other new pilots.

Peter where the only two entries in the intermediate class. after the wP champs when Peter destroyed his plane, he has now acquired the envision which was owned by stuart. From an old 2 stroke to a modern electric, a hugh leap and after only 4 flights before this comp he managed to put in a fantastic effort and found out how different an electric plane is, but i am sure after a few more flights he will soon get to grips with it. well done Peter for finishing all four rounds.

sorry mike hadn’t forgotten you, having said that, mike did only manage one round because on the landing came in rather too fast and running off the runway collected an outer marker post ripping off the landing gear and a section of the wing, next time fit brakes.

aubrey, rory and cobus, the advanced three, fort it out in the Advanced class. aubrey was the clear winner but cobus is hot on his heals especially when aubrey forgot the first maneuver on round

two, or was that the caller!! anyway the competition between aubrey and cobus is quite tight, rory needs to listen to his caller and spend more time practicing, he is knocking on the 60% door, maybe next time.

Finally Masters and once again stuart was on top form and the clearly winning all three rounds. ernie and Gerhard fort it out for the next two places and it was extremely close in the end. rodney is still getting used to his new plane and had

hearing difficulties during some of his flights, maybe its my english!!! Finally, Johnny only managed the first two rounds after making a stall landing on his second flight and breaking the gear.

its great to see a positive growth in our local Pattern interest, 14 entries with another 4 pilots that i know about. a full entry of 18 could be achieved.

Finally thanks to the Judges, martin, Kas and bernus for there time.

Precision Aerobatics and Large scale aerobatics shared the same flight line at the southern end of the flying field. It provided enough separation from the other activities taking place at the Northern end of the field.A total of 22 pilots from all over the country entered for Precision Aerobatics. The biggest class entry was Masters, with 8 contestants.Arriving at the contest site on Friday morning, we met up with Stuart Nix, Cobus Malan, Rodney Potter and Ozzie Parenzee - all from the Western Cape. It was great to see such a

large entry from the Cape Province. Later in the afternoon, they were joined by the WC judges Ludwig Steyn and Martin Knoesen. During one of Rodney’s practice flights, the motor and the aircraft separated in mid air, due to possible resonance, ripping the complete nose section off the model. Fortunately he could land the plane, but some damage was caused to the undercarriage and the wings. This was his second misfortune with an Azyular.

David Austin also had a mishap on the practice day, damaging his beautiful Spark. During Friday afternoon, Danie Potgieter did the F3A model processing according to the new FAI rules.

Many aerobatics pilots also competed in some of the other disciplines – being Pylon Racing, Control line, Large Scale, Jets and Scale, making it a very busy contest for them. Our judges for the contest were Chris Theron (Chief Judge) - GP, Ivan Olivier - GP, Bruce Clark - KZN, Ludwig Stein -WP, Sebastiano Sacca - NW and Martin Knoesen –WP, and Danie Potgieter was the flight line director. All MAASA classes were contested at the Nats. Precision Aerobatics started flying on Saturday morning with near perfect

weather conditions, which prevailed for most of the contest. It was great having Jacques Botha competing in the Sportsman Class flying a Stick. His scores improved throughout the contest, and he posted his best score of 59.67%. Well-done Jacques. We hope to see more of you in the future. The Intermediate class was a close contest, with Hugo Erasmus and Chris O’Connell alternating positions every round. Chris finally took top honors with 63.3% and 2977 normalized points.

the entry had reduced slightly from the original entry list but the pilots who did show up had no excuse not to fly well.

nine entries flew 4 rounds each in front of three judges, nick, ludwig, martin and bernus, who took it in turns to judge.

the weather couldn’t have been any better, the flag didn’t move all day, a warm, sunny winters day, just perfect.

sportsman entries maurice and Jacques battled it out. both in only there second competition showed great enthusiasm.

Jacques showing maurice a clean pair of heals, winning all four rounds and the class with an overall score of 55.72%. i see the signs of a pattern plane coming soon!!

Finally to the Masters and once again a well supported class of 5 entries. Gerhard mitton was given a Quantum by bernus who had brought it from aubrey. Gerhard took to the Quantum very quickly and right out of the box was competitive.

ozzie show progress with his flying and managed a good 58 on his second round, an improvement but still need more practice. rodney was finally finding the line with the osmose and broke into the 60’s, a great 4th place. what are you going to do when cobus finishes the repair on your other plane... let’s see!

so now the top 3 pilots, ernie, Gerhard and stuart. not much ernie and Gerhard could do to stop stuart winning all four rounds with some great flying, just missing out on the 70% on his third flight was a clear winner. the fight for second between ernie and Gerhard was very close but ernie got his act together with a great final round score and second

to start the event off the skies where rather tricky, swirling winds and cloud made visibility rather difficult for everyones first flight.

masters class, ernie was first to go, setting the bench mark for the other five masters pilots by scoring a good 56%. close to him was rodney, first competition with his asyuler and the first event after the repair.

He improved until making a mistake on the fourth round and ended on a very respectable 60% and a masters invitation.

ozzie battled once again, on his second round he almost achieved a 60% but he always shows great enthusiasm.

Gerhard was getting used to his Quantum and was a regular 60% scorer, in fact almost got into the 70’s on his last flight.

ernie, also a regular 60% scoring his event best on round 3 but was always one step behind Gerhard.

neil allen a “new-be” to the cape has moved here from KZn must have found the breathing easier now he is at sea-level and scored his best scores battled it out with regular winner stuart, i think he stopped breathing on his final flight.

stuart won the first round just ahead of neil, but on the next three rounds neil was one step ahead. a very close battle between them which produced some fantastic flying and a comment from the three Judges, “we’ve never seen so many 8’s on a score sheet”. in the end it was neil winning the class, but only just.

i think the masters class is going to be a real cracker next season with the new

schedules.

so after all that, the only guys left were Jeremy and Jacques. they had a very close battle.

For the first time Jacques flying his azurit was the clear winning with some good 50+ scores and will soon be moving up to the next class.

Jeremy broke into the 50’s and gave Jacques a run for his money on the third round.

in the end it was Jacques winning the class but he better watch out.

so the 2015 season is over and it has been a great one too. lots to talk about, lots to remember.

new schedules for next year will see everyone starting at the same level, should be
