Conditions Necessary for Hurricane Formation
1. Seawater ≥ 27 ° C in the upper 60 m of ocean2. Air must be warm and humid3. Upper level winds should be weak- i.e. no wind
shear; not different winds at different elevations4. Coriolis Effect is required - > 500 km from
equator – equator is safe from hurricanes
Keller, Pearson Education
- In the eye it tends to be a little bit warmer- 500km across – eye is only a small area- Eye is extreme low pressure
Warm, humid/most air required because….
Hurricane are powered by latent heat of condensation as water vapour condenses to drops. But hurricanes pull this heat out of the surface water of ocean, not just air. Will run as long as over warm ocean water.
Hurricane Gloria off east coast of U.S., Sept. 1985

The wind doesn’t kill people – the water does.
