Club NewsFrom the editor

Welcome to the August newsletter.

The big news this month is that Pilgrimage is nearly here (14-16 August). Several planning sessions, including base camps at Kalbar showgrounds, have pushed the agenda forward very well. The event promises to meet it's main purpose which is to be a positive social experience for bushwalkers. Well over 70 people have registered so far. More info is inside.

The annual general meeting has been delayed a month due to Pilgrimage but it is time to think about it. It is also time to renew club memberships.

And there are several local walk reports. Enjoy your reading!

The membership form and fee may be handed to a committee member at a meeting or to a walk leader on

a walk or posted to the club address. Members have until the end of August to renew their membership or risk having their membership cancelled (this rarely happens and we really wouldn't like it to!).

Pilgrimage Update

It's two weeks to Pilgrimage 2015! (14-16 August at Kalbar Showgrounds)

There has been a noticeable surge in registrations just prior to the cut-off date for the discount. Around 78 paidattendees were confirmed on 2 August. This figure is expected to rise further based on previous experience. Due to these numbers it is recommended that you arrive as soon as possible after the 12 noon commencement time on Friday to secure your preferred tent or camp site.

The Pilgrimage officially runs from 12 noon Friday to 12 noon Sunday.

Cost of registration is $55.00. Payment can be made by cash or electronically on-line. If you are paying the registration fee on arrival please try to have the exact cash amount on hand.Registration Forms can be downloaded from the web: https://sites.google.com/site/qldbwc/pilgrimage-2015.

Remember when you arrive in Kalbar to first go to theSchool of Arts in Edward Street to book in and obtain your wrist band. You must have a wrist band to get into the showground where Marshal Ralph (site co-ordinator) will advise you of your camping options.

If you plan to eat out on Friday or Saturday night, you will need to book well in advance (ie now) to get a seat at the local Royal Hotel (ph: 5463 7188). If you miss out don't despair – there are several cafes in Kalbar or alternatively, there are hotels in nearby Boonah, Dugandan, Mt Alford, Aratula, Rosevale, Harrisville or Peak Crossing. These towns are about 15-20 minutes drive away so you'll need a designated driver if you choose to drink.

Band-o'-Coots will lead us in a hootin' tootin' bush dance. It will be a lot of fun. However if numbers become particularly large, it is possible that people may have to 'take turns' in the hall to keep the numbersmanageable. We ask that people follow instructions for everyone's safety The MC will advise and coordinate.

There are currently eleven walks on the Saturday, ranging from very easy to hard. There are still opportunities to lead a walk if you wish to volunteer. Contact Richard Kolarski for information about walks. Also Mary has a bike ride planned for Sunday.

Note that it is possible that a walk may be cancelled fora variety of factors such as burning off, etc. If you have a particular walk in mind already, it may be a good ideato have a plan B. (At the time of writing we are monitoring a fire alert for the Flinders Peak Reserve)

We recommend that you bring a quantity of small denomination cash with you for things such as the raffle and last minute items from the store.

The Pilgrimage committee is asking for attendees to please bring a plate of savoury food for the Saturday evening supper. Gluten free options are helpful too. Contact Mary Sherlock for other ways you may help.

Several items such as an esky, wine bag, thermal mugs, and cooking set have been donated as prizes. These will be awarded as spot prizes during the dance on Saturday night.

2. Two nights of mid-week accommodation for two people at Binna Burra Lodge, Lamington NP, including dinner, breakfast, morning tea, afternoon tea and activities.

3. Two nights of mid-week accommodation for two people at Binna Burra Lodge, Lamington NP, including dinner, breakfast, morning tea, afternoon tea and activities.

4. Four books by John and Lyn Daly from the Take a Walk series – Southern NSW & ACT, SE Qld, Kosciuszko and Northern Territory's National Parks.

The raffle is open to non-attendees.

Tickets are $2.00 each.

The draw will be held at 9pm Saturday 15 August at the Kalbar School of Arts. The confirmed holder of the first drawn ticket will be offered their choice of one of the four prizes. If the holder is not present, the drawers will ring the phone number provided on the ticket and offer the ticket holder their choice of prize. If the holder is unable to be contacted within five minutes of that draw, the choice will go to the next drawn ticket holder and so on. It is not essential to be present to win a prize, but it is essential to be available at the time of the draw to obtain the preferred choice of prize. Due to the nature of the draw choices, it is important that each ticket holders name and best contact number (mobile preferred) be clearly written on each ticket.

For ticket sellers, it is important that you ensure that the ticket purchaser's name and phone number is clearly written on both the ticket and the stub of each ticket.

General NewsShepherds Walk 2015

On 18 July, the Beaudesert Historical Society hosted a Shepherds Walk. Sandy Thomas, Michael Hoopmann and Ron Davis attended from QBW.

It was a clear sunny day with a frosty start as approximately 80 participants gathered at the museum in Beaudesert to board two buses. After a stop at the memorial where a society member provided a brief history of the event, the walkers were transferred to a nearby dairy farm where the walk began. Initially passing through paddocks and dodging cow pats, the walk soon commenced in earnest following a gully thenonto a ridge up to the crest of the Jinbroken Range. A long break at the saddle enabled the more able to take a side excursion to the top of the hill where better views could be obtained. Two eagles soaring in the thermals provided a fine sight.

An opening through the trees partway down the ridge on the eastern side gave a clear view of Lost World, Mount Westray, and the ridge where the Stinson fell.

One of the more elderly gents on the walk suffered a dizzy spell on the descent but a call on the two way radio soon brought up a four wheel drive that ferried him down the remainder of the way.

The crossing of the Albert River proved a challenge for some walkers and several techniques were employed with varying success. Damper and tea was a welcome reward at the picnic ground near the washpool.

Desley from BWQ organised a photo shoot that included a representative from each bushwalking club. Sandy Thomas ably represented QBW. Facebookers may see this on the BWQ Facebook page. The picnic provided opportunities to make new friends and also topromote the upcoming Pilgrimage. The walk length

was probably about 6 kilometres and participants ranged in age from 10 to 80+. The speed was relaxed and there were numerous breaks. Several 'guides' were on hand to attend to people's needs. It was a relaxing, educational and well organised event.

Past Walks Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens SOC 28 June 2015

A keen group of riders met at Sumner Park where they left their cars for a brisk ride along the bike path bordering the Western Freeway. With only a little deep breathing on a couple of hills all riders made it to the Botanical Gardens where they met the non-riders for a leisurely morning tea in the cafe. As the crowds began building, the group departed and did a complete circumnavigation of the parklands. First a visit to the lake area to watch water dragons and water fowl. Thenit was up the hill to examine an interesting war memorial. This proved timely as the only shower of rainfor the day came through while we were under this shelter. The native gardens nearby were quite informative for those looking to do some home landscaping.

A loop through the rainforest followed, made even wetter by some feral sprinklers. The sun shone again at the top lookout that gave views to the city skyline. We descended through more densely growing gardenswith one person doing a detour via the Japanese garden and bonsai display.

Eventually we made our way to the exit and reluctantly mounted our bikes for the return ride back to the cars. It was only a few kilometres of walking but the visit to the gardens provided an informative way to learn aboutthe Australian bush.

Steamers & Lower Panorama Point T/W 29/30 July

Richard, Mary and Michael met up and headed off at 5.30am from Brisbane. A clear and still morning meant there were several frosty patches as we drove towards Emu Vale. A particularly heavy frost greeted us during a brief stop in Yangan.

We parked the car near the base of the prow and walked to the junction of Steamer Creek road. Soon after the junction along Steamer Creek valley we left the road and began angling up the slope to the easternend of the prow. We encountered a number of deep gullies – more than expected, and this slowed our progress a little. A morning tea stop between the mast and the funnel revived our energy and we followed the track easterly past several large caves. Finally we surged up the slope onto the top of the stern and madeour way along to the spectacular view of the Steamers.

After a short photo session we returned to the eastern end of the stern to have lunch. We continued

ascending to the top of Mount Steamer where we struggled to find a clear view through the vegetation and many tall hoop pines. We walked to the eastern end of the ridge which terminates in a precipitous cliff. Backtracking a little, we descended northwards down avery steep slope where the vegetation proved almost essential in providing hand holds to slow our falling. A short walk later had us at Steamer Saddle camp site.

We soon pitched our tents and set off in search of the nearby water source. A few litres were obtained and boiled back at camp. During a relaxing meal we enjoyed watching a blue moon rise over Lizard Point.

Fortunately the forecast overnight minimum temperature of a couple degrees below zero didn't eventuate and we appreciated a positively balmy ten degree morning start.

A quick photo shoot and we were on the trail again, heading north along a relatively level track to Lower Panorama Point. Packs were thankfully left at the baseof the climb which proved difficult enough on the slippery mud bank. It must be treacherous when wet! Ashort while later we were enjoying views to Spicers Peak to the north and down to Mount Superbus to the south. We soon retraced our steps, picked up our packs and set off for Davies Ridge. We traversed the side of the hill to gain the ridge track. This 'short cut' sometimes followed a path but more often meant pushing through heavy grass. It is open country though.

Unfortunately just as we reached the Davies Ridge campsite with excellent views of the Steamers, Mary realised she didn't have her camera. Mary felt it likely she lost it where we'd dropped our packs at the base ofLower Panorama Point. As we were well ahead of schedule, Michael headed back there to find it. Sadly it wasn't there.

After our group reformed, we followed the track westwards along the top of Davies Ridge, which at onepart forms quite an interesting razorback. After a couple of kilometres, we began descending steeply into the valley until the road was gained. Three more kilometres of comparatively flat walking saw us back atthe car and on our return to Brisbane, with an obligatory coffee stop at Aratula. The walk was approximately 14 kilometres each day, with the first daymostly up and the second mostly down. The views were stunning.

Thanks Richard for leading and Mary also for your entertaining company and commentary.
