Amy Bambenek

Seahawk Volleyball continued its upward trajectory in 2014 with its second 20-win season and Colonial Athletic Association semifinal appearance in Head Coach Amy Bambenek’s sixth season at the lead of the program.

UNCW posted a 21-11 record overall and finished with a 10-6 mark in the CAA. The 10 wins in con-ference play marked the second straight season the program set a new conference win record. The Seahawks topped Delaware in the first round of the CAA tournament before bowing to top-seed College of Charleston in five sets in the semifinals.

In six seasons, Bambenek has guided the Seahawks to double-digit win totals in five seasons and six in-season tournament titles.

Middle blocker Meredith Peacock was a first-team All-CAA selection and was also named AVCA East Coast Region Honorable Mention. Peacock ranked fifth in the nation with a conference-leading 1.53 blocks per set and was sixth in the NCAA with a CAA-high 178 total blocks.

The Seahawks placed three on the All-CAA teams with Morgan Kline and Sarah Kelly joining Peacock on the third and all-rookie teams, respectively. Kline also was named to the All-Academic team.

UNCW enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history in 2013, winning three in-season tourna-ments and posting 20 victories for just the ninth time in the program’s 41-year history. The Sea-hawks finished third in the CAA standings with a then school-record eight league victories and made their first CAA Tournament appearance since 2000, knocking off William & Mary in the first round before falling to Northeastern.

Individually, senior Christi Laite earned First-Team All-CAA honors, becoming the first UNCW player in 20 seasons to earn the distinction. Laite was also

recognized for her work in the classroom as she be-came the first Seahawk to be named CAA Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year for volleyball. Sophomore Mer-edith Peacock and freshman Nicole Lott were also recognized as both players garnered Second-Team All-CAA distinction while Lott was also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

The 2012 campaign saw UNCW record double-digit wins for the third time in four seasons under Bam-benek as the team posted victories over state foes Campbell, High Point and North Carolina Central as well as Colonial Athletic Association foes George Mason, James Madison and William & Mary. Laite earned Second-Team All-CAA recognition for the second consecutive season while Laite and three other players garnered All-Tournament Team recog-nition a total of six times during the regular season.

The Seahawks enjoyed a successful inaugural cam-paign under Bambenek in 2009 as the team posted its highest win total since 1996 and its most CAA victories since 2002. The team also captured its third in-season tournament title in as many seasons with a victory at the Davidson Wildcat Classic.

The 2010 season saw the Seahawks post victories over in-state rivals Campbell, Elon and North Caro-lina A&T. Individually, three players earned All-Tour-nament Team honors a total of four times while five returning players set new personal career highs in

more than 10 different statistical categories.

The 2011 campaign produced the Seahawks’ high-est Colonial Athletic Association win total in 24 sea-sons, highlighted by victories over then league-lead-ing James Madison and a sweep of William & Mary for the first time in program history. UNCW’s strong showing in league play was rewarded as Laite earned Second-Team All-CAA distinction, becoming the first UNCW player since the 2003 season to earn all-conference accolades.

Bambenek, 38, came to the Port City after eight sea-sons as an assistant and associate head coach at George Washington University, where she played a key role in the development of the Colonials’ pro-gram in the nation’s capital.
